Yesterday after the rain I went out for #Mosstodon #LichenSubscribe tree trunk photos and also encountered some bugs! This is all from a small patch of a quite ordinary Norway maple.

went down to lake and saw some good bugs
1. long-jawed orbweaver (_Tetragnatha_)
2. crambid moth (one of the grass-veneer moths, tribe Crambini), so confident in its camouflage as a hollow grass blade I could get quite close
3. also very well camouflaged _Eustala_ orbweaver

A friend and I had a field day at Glatved Beach looking for spiders. I'll say it again, going hunting with nerdy friends is the best. He really had a knack for spotting the little jumpers. This little beaut is a

#DailySpiderPic: an unexpected find in my bathroom—a spitting spider (_Scytodes thoracica_), only the second or third one I've ever seen! These spiders' large, bulbous heads house special glands that let them spray venom-laced silk onto prey, and they are adept at hunting other spiders as well as insects. In my part of the world they are generally indoor spiders.
I love the intricate patterns on its body. The curlicues on its head remind me of the F-holes in violins.
After this photoshoot I returned it to where I found it.

Yesterday I went down to the basement to see if the laundry room really was closed for repairs or if I'd somehow misread the notice. It was closed. However on the stairs down I saw a spiderling, then another spiderling… My first thought was funnel-weavers of some kind, but they looked like wolf spiders. But why would there be a bunch of baby wolf spiders around if there weren't…Ah! Looking around I saw a mother wolf spider huddled against a step. I coaxed her onto my hand and let her out in the garden, and managed to get one of the loose spiderlings as well.
Wolf spiders carry their young on their abdomens for a time after hatching, the only spider family that does so.

Middle-aged lady, seeing me hunched over peering into the Queen Anne's Lace (_Daucus carota_) in a garden bed at the park: "Did you find it?"
Me, in an "oh my god, it's full of stars" tone: "I found them *ALL*!"
Lady, looking at the flowers: "They're beautiful, aren't they."
Me: "I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing but YES."

#DailyMitePic: These aphids on a dill plant are being parasitized by larval parasitengone mites *and* also being hunted by an adult _Allothrombium_ sumo mite, elegantly illustrating the typical Parasitengona lifestyle.
It's possible the little ones are larval _Allothrombium_. I may collect some and see if I can rear them to adulthood so they can be identified.

Yesterday I found a pseudoscorpion under a wood chip in the garden! It's been ages since I spotted one.
I pointed out its little scorpion claws to the building manager who said "Yes, I see," even though, judging by the text size she has set on the office computer, she probably could not, in fact, see. I strongly doubt she is interested at all. Good. That'll teach her to try making small talk with me.

Last night went out for a good bug ramble except I realized I forgot my light, so I went home and made do with my phone flash along the way. (OpenCamera has a torch flash mode where the flash is always on.)
- _Leptinotarsa_ potato beetles mating
- a huge _Clubiona_ leaf-curling sac spider eating a zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_)
- an ant war (_Tetramorium_?), this was only one of two large patches, with skirmishes up and down the sidewalk
- a *huge* sawfly larva? of some kind#ArthroBeauty #bugstodon #spiders #insects #beetles #ants #sawflies #Araneae #Clubionidae #Salticidae #Coleoptera #Chrysomelidae #Hymenoptera #Formicidae #Symphyta

#DailySpiderPic: found a couple of _Myrmarachne_ ant-mimic jumping spiders on the garden wall today! With their shape and coloration combined with fast staccato motion, if you're not looking closely it's easy to confuse them with their model, _Camponotus_ carpenter ants (pictured: a worker feeding on a bit of apple I gave them, also today).

There's a tan jumping spider (_Platycryptus undatus_) that apparently lives on the garden wall. I caught a plant bug for her. She didn't take it out of my fingers but I put it on the edge of a brick. She circled warily until she was behind it, then began tapping her trembling pedipalps in unison (you could practically see the gears turning in her head and equations flying by). Then she leaped on it and dragged it into the shade between two bricks. I hope she survives and sticks around. It is nice having a jumping spider to visit.
(There are plenty of zebra jumpers already, but I can't tell them apart)

AND THEN. On the top of the very same chair I saw a cluster of small mites that, by their size and behaviour, I first took for clover mites (unusual, since it's now kind of hot for them.) But no. They were a kind of mite I'd never seen before in real life: rodent/bird mites!!!
No idea what they were doing there. The chair was under a tree, so I suppose a bird nest or part of it could have fallen down? No traces of one nearby, though.
As I was photographing the mites, a bunch got on me and my phone. While these mites *can* bite humans and cause itching (although they cannot reproduce with only us to feed on), this is not a big deal to me because I currently have eczema/heat rash and my entire body itches already. There's nothing they can do to me that hasn't already been done!!!
I'm kicking myself for not having any collecting vials on me, though.

#DailySpiderPic: Just the other day I said to @futurebird that I really wanted to find another male _Philodromus marxi_ and today IT HAPPENED. It was ballooning from the arm of a Muskoka chair by the lake, in the same park where I'd found one years ago.
While most running crab spiders here are grey or brown, made to camouflage against tree bark or in the undergrowth, _P. marxi_ males have shiny iridescent abdomens. I think they are stunningly beautiful.

#DailySpiderPic: I was thrilled to discover that there is a feather-legged or hackled orbweaver (family Uloboridae) in the lavender plant again this year—surely a child of last year's.
These spiders are unusual in a few ways: they have lost their venom entirely, and they make orb webs with cribellate silk that is fuzzy instead of sticky. (There are many spiders that make orb webs, and many that make cribellate silk, but only this family does both.) They are not rare, but I still think they are interesting.
