  1. Happy All Saints’ Day! After a full month of celebrating spiders for #Arachtober, it feels fitting to share this.

In the 3rd century, Saint Felix of Nola was fleeing persecution. He hid in a small opening in a wall, and a spider quickly spun a thick, intricate web across the entrance. When his pursuers arrived, they saw the web untouched and passed by, assuming no one could be inside.

Because of this miracle, Saint Felix is considered the patron saint of spiders.

  2. Buried Alive - #Arachtober 31
I watched this horrifying scene unfold in a flower pot at a state park.

This Wetland Giant Wolf Spider (Tigrosa helluo) is not dead, only paralyzed by the sting of its hunter, a Rusty Spider Wasp (Tachypompilus ferrugineus).

The wasp is dragging the spider to its grave. There, it will be entombed alive, a living meal for the single wasp larva that will hatch on its body. It will be slowly eaten alive from the inside, in the dark, for weeks.

  3. Happy Fly Day Friday! - #Arachtober 31
    Crab Spider (Genus Mecaphesa)
    Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera)
    Freeloader Flies (Family Milichiidae)
    Southern Seaside Goldenrod (Solidago mexicana)

  4. #Arachtober 31: handsome little ice cream sandwich boi (male _Hentzia palmarum_ jumping spider) spotted back in August.

Damn, posting every day feels like way more work than it should. Anyway back to slightly less frequent arachnid posts tomorrow…

  6. CW: Content Warning Spiders

    Alopecosa barbipes Klitkæmpejæger
    No common name in english

Last day of Arachtober, and it ends with another favourite from my aunt and uncle's garden. A. barbipes, while not rare in Denmark as such, is not found in my neck of the woods. They prefer areas with sparse vegetation, short turf, and lichen heath.

  10. Near the end of the last night hike of the year at a local nature park, I noticed a quick movement of a spider going in a hole and shutting the door. I don't think I saw much of the spider, just the movement. I found the hole and pried it open to see this set of legs. She backed further into the hole so this is the best shot I got.

Based on the iNaturalist documented species we have around here, a Southwestern Trapdoor Spider (Eucteniza relata) is the most common trapdoor spider and would have similar legs. The next most common one with similar feet has only 3 observations, Ummidia funerea. That one has a blue abdomen that I really want to see. Whichever it was, it was the first I found so I was excited.

  11. #Arachtober 30: a lovely female hacklemesh weaver (_Amaurobius cf. ferox_) out in the open one night, rare for them. They spend most of their time in crevices in retreats of fuzzy back-combed silk that extends some way outside, letting them sense prey passing too close. People typically encounter the mature males that go wandering in search of mates and inadvertently end up inside.

The family is closely related to the funnel-weavers (family Agelenidae).

  13. #Arachtober 29: didn't have time for a proper spider outing, so hopped over the garden wall to see what I could find in the yard—and almost walked right through this cross orbweaver's web strung between the dead coneflowers and columbines! As you can hopefully see in the close-up, her jaws are full of a big lump of mushed-up bugs.

  15. CW: Hairy spider... but friendly looking

    Cookie monster

Araignée loup - Dock spider - Dolomedes striatus

I spent an entire week looking at that spider at the end of a dock on a lake. It was the size of my palm 🫣 I was fascinated how it froze at night and came back to life in the morning. Most of my macro pictures are horrendous to look at! This is the only one that made me laugh. A little.

  17. #Arachtober 28
Leptoctenus byrrhus. A pretty Lycosoidea spider in the Wandering Spider family (Ctenidae) that I don't see very often.

I was in my garden, where there was no breeze and nothing else moving, and this Red-femured Spotted Orb Weaver was swinging using its web.

There was also no music playing.

  20. #Arachtober 27: late October, we're getting frost warnings, but the orbweavers just keep on trucking. Taken just a few hours ago on a grocery run; the supermarket's large windows attract a lot of midges and are great scaffolds for the ubiquitous _Larinioides_ orbweavers.

  22. #Arachtober 25: now for something entirely different, a penthaleid mite (bugguide.net/node/view/263374) feeding on a dandelion leaf. Species like the common _P. major_ (which this probably is) have a #DorsalAnus and excrete these globules as they feed, often hanging upside down on the undersides of leaves or vertically on blades of grass.

(If you think a dorsal anus is wild, certain astig females have secondary dorsal genital openings for copulation.)

  23. It's still #Arachtober 24 somewhere: a tiny, curious zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_). It even gave me a little head tilt. WARNING: very high levels of cute
