  7. Just now I was in the garden, waiting for the laundry to finish, minding my own business and not looking for any bugs at all, when a plant bug (Miridae) (I think, anyway) dropped out of the sky and landed on the table next to me. Two small flies were feeding on it.

Sometimes #FridayFlyDay comes to you, I guess.

  8. trying to be perceived as a normal, friendly person by nodding and smiling as an old man passes me on the sidewalk while I'm hunched over someone's bushes next to their green bin extremely suspiciously, taking photos of flies having sex

(Sunflower Seed Maggot fly)--a species of fruit fly in the family Tephritidae. Genus Elachiptera--genus of frit flies in the family Chloropidae (larvae feed on grasses). Cylindromyia intermedia--a species of bristle fly in the family Tachinidae.

  14. #FridayFlyDay
Robber fly (Family Asilidae) of the genus Ospriocerus. Robber flies are powerfully built predators of arthropods. They are the big cats of the insect world.

  15. Given the concurrence of Valentine's Day and #FridayFlyDay, here's a lovebug!

Lovebugs are flies (not bugs) that form mating swarms--if you drive through one, your windshield will get plastered. They fly "hooked up" by their genitals, and so are also called honeymoon flies or double-headed bugs. They can remain attached for several days. Their larvae feed on decaying vegetation in the soil.

This is the only photo of a lovebug that I've got to share. It's Plecia nearctica (the Common Lovebug).

  16. I saved this one for #FridayFlyday, and although the heron was ok with me taking pictures, a walker with a dog did make it move away from the path - but it landed just a few feet away. #Birds 🪶 #Photography #BirdPhotography.

  17. #FridayFlyDay and this Great Blue Heron from back in Seattle, just after take off, going over Elliott Bay. #Birds 🪶 #Photography #BirdPhotography
