  1. And although literally no one asked, here's some pics of the wild bedbugs…

(They're securely contained in a vial with a tight-fitting lid. The graph paper is a label recording the species, location, and date they were collected. I can put isopropyl alcohol in to kill and preserve them at this point, but I need to buy more.)

  2. Also, right as I was coming home I saw a pair of mating thread-legged bugs (family Reduviidae, subfamily Emesinae) on the wall! I have only seen them singly before. They're extremely skinny assassin bugs with a mantis-like raptorial first pair of legs.

They're very hard to take photos of as they will try to get away from you and also do this shaky, juddering walk. (Camouflage?) Lots of better photos here: bugguide.net/node/view/213

  7. So far there is only one coneflower blooming in the garden. It has attracted hordes of 1) carpet beetles (which feed on pollen as adults); 2) thrips; and 3) minute pirate bugs and 4) whirligig mites, which both eat the thrips.

  8. Just now I was in the garden, waiting for the laundry to finish, minding my own business and not looking for any bugs at all, when a plant bug (Miridae) (I think, anyway) dropped out of the sky and landed on the table next to me. Two small flies were feeding on it.

Sometimes #FridayFlyDay comes to you, I guess.

  9. The #dockbug #Coreus #marginatus (#Coreidae, #Heteroptera) is distributed from Europe to Asia and parts of Africa. It feeds e.g. on docks and sorrels. After 5 nymphal #instars, the bug overwinters as adults. Authors Pekár, S., Hrušková, M. (2006) found that the #bugs use all three of their #senses to #recognize their #food: eyes, antennae, and labial sensillae.

  10. Yesterday, I observed an insect I had never encountered before. I captured an image of it and uploaded it to iNaturalist. It is called Zelus renardii. Interestingly, this turned out to be one of the earliest documented sightings of this species in Germany, and quite possibly the first observation of it in its nymphal form in Germany.
This particular insect is native to North America and has already established itself in the Mediterranean region of Europe. It appears to be gradually moving northward as the climate becomes warmer. Whether it will be invasive / problematic remains to be seen.

  11. @Milvus
