#Mimicry is always a cool #biology topic so this bit of #science news is a treat:
Fake zombies
As if spiders aren't creepy enough, or bug victims of the famous "The Last of Us" zombie #Cordyceps #fungus aren't creepier, we have now discovered a #spider #species which has decided its strategy for survival in this world is to simply *look* like a zombie spider fungus victim. To disgust predators and put prey at ease
It's called Taczanowskia waska
It lives in #Ecuador

Camouflage vs mimicry vs masquerade
Camouflage (Crypsis): This is the art of blending into the background so you become invisible. A green grasshopper hiding in green grass is camouflage.
Mimicry: This is when an animal evolves to look like a different living organism, usually to trick a predator into thinking it's dangerous or unpalatable. For example, a harmless moth evolving to look and buzz exactly like a stinging wasp.

#DailySpiderPic: found a couple of _Myrmarachne_ ant-mimic jumping spiders on the garden wall today! With their shape and coloration combined with fast staccato motion, if you're not looking closely it's easy to confuse them with their model, _Camponotus_ carpenter ants (pictured: a worker feeding on a bit of apple I gave them, also today).

📷Carnifex #insectos #insects #mimetismo #mimicry

Forgive the subpar photos but I just saw an ant-mimic jumping spider (_Synageles_) investigating a crevice in a wrought-iron fence post. Antennae twitched within. The hole was already occupied by a carpenter ant (_Camponotus_ cf. _novaeboracensis_?) who did not buy the spider's disguise one bit. The last pic is the Synageles looking at me like "Did you just see that?!" It was too funny.

@tikitu A very beautiful #photograph of the beetle #Pygopleurus #vulpes (#Glaphyridae,#Scarabaeoidea), which is native to Greece and Eastern European regions, including Romania, Russia, and Ukraine. The long, contrasting #bodyhairs of the #males are striking, serving as a form of #mimicry to protect them from predators. They mimic the appearance of a defensive #bumblebee, with which birds, for example, have had negative experiences, but also improve pollination, a benefit especially for red plants.

Li et al. studied the genomic basis of mimicry in Epicopeiidae moths, finding that TE-driven regulatory innovation rewired developmental gene networks, facilitating the emergence of multiple mimetic forms.

"Humans instinctively mimic the facial expressions of monkeys and apes"

"People don’t just recognize emotions on the faces of monkeys and apes. They also tend to copy those expressions without meaning to.
A new study suggests that, when we watch a non-human primate look playful or threatening, our own faces subtly echo what we see …"

Animal coloration (Zoology 🦥)
Animal coloration is the general appearance of an animal resulting from the reflection or emission of light from its surfaces. Some animals are brightly coloured, while others are hard to see. #Moths of the #Saturniidae are characterized by #adults that camouflage with closed wings (#mimesis), but perform a #mimicry behavior, when disturbed by presenting their #eyespots. They have stunted/fully reduced #mouthparts and reproduce only. Species of genus #Automeris live mostly in the tropics/subtropics, #caterpillars can look #colorful and #bizarre and are defensive via stinging hairs. Exples: Automeris egeus or A. niepelti. The #caterpillar below might be related.

The #honeybadger is widespread in #Africa and shares #habitats with #cheetahs. Cheetah #cubs possess a #mane-like, light-colored #fur running down their back, reminiscent of the honey badger, which is highly unpopular with #predators due to its #defensive nature. R. L. Eaton (1976) concluded that the cubs #mimic the honey badger to avoid predation. #mimicry

📷Rhinolin #caterpillar #orugas #lepidoptera #insectos #insects #mimetismo #mimicry
