  1. Just as interesting to me was the behaviour of the mite. It kept running around the same square inch or so. (Normally they run around a much larger area and when they run around in a small area it's just a turn or two in a small burst of energy, in the manner of one of those hyperactive dogs so energetic they can't sit still for long.) It really did seem as if it were *looking for the midge*!

I felt so bad for it I smushed a plant bug nymph (family Miridae) and dropped it by the mite, who immediately took it. (2/2)

  2. Today's whirligig mite (family Anystidae) menu:

    - a plant bug nymph (family Miridae)
    - another whirligig mite, or an old exoskeleton maybe?
    - a thrips
-a small midge-like fly of some sort

Out of sheer curiosity I captured about half a dozen decently sized whirligig mites and put them on the brown-eyed Susan (_Rudbeckia triloba_) plants which are currently covered in large black aphids. (They do not seem to appreciably harm the plants, which will only mature and bloom much later in the year.) I am not sure if they'll even stay on the plant given how erratically they run around, nor if they'll go for the aphids.

In Central Europe they have 1 annual #generation. #Adults and nymphs feed on nectar and various plants in the #herbaceouslayer and prefer warm #habitats. It can cover #longdistances by #flying. According to Y. Zheng et al. (2024), these #flights depend on #temperature and relative #humidity.

  5. Just now I was in the garden, waiting for the laundry to finish, minding my own business and not looking for any bugs at all, when a plant bug (Miridae) (I think, anyway) dropped out of the sky and landed on the table next to me. Two small flies were feeding on it.

Sometimes #FridayFlyDay comes to you, I guess.

  19. Interestinger and interestinger. This is Trilaccus mimeticus (#Hemiptera, #Miridae), a species only described in 2020 in this paper: dx.doi.org/10.1163/1876312X-00

The paper says, "Trilaccus mimeticus sp. n. is unique amongst Saturniomirini, having sinuate margins and transparent fascia of the corium, giving the mimetic appearance of a wasplike petiole."

64 records already in #iNaturalist, a few from before the species was named:

  21. Quick shot from last night. I assumed it was going to be an alysiine braconid. #iNaturalist immediately suggested the same thing, so I don't feel so stupid, but it's clearly #Hemiptera.

It resembles #Miridae like #Rayieria but the antennal segments all seem off for that.

Any pointers from #hemipterists out there?

  30. I think this is a member of the family Miridae. E.g. plant bugs. Like all true bugs, these have sucking mouth parts, this one was found in Central Park in late May.

  31. #MiteMonday: It's crowded in the garden during Peak Anystid! Yesterday I saw a whirligig mite (family Anystidae) eating a small plant bug (family Miridae) when a second mite came along and had a bite. The first mite stopped feeding, but did keep one foot on the bug, as if to call dibs. It wasn't long before a third mite happened upon the kill and also helped itself to the bug.
