  1. April 30th is apparently World Robber Fly Day. These are Promachus princeps and the nuptial gift is a longhorned beetle. Madras, Oregon, USA. #asilidae #robberfly #fly #diptera #entomology #nature #beetle #insects

  2. A Robber Fly, probably Ophionomima solocifemur, spotted at Thomson Nature Park, Singapore on 18 April 2025. It has a very long abdomen, and long hairy hind legs that make it an unusual looking fly.

    On iNaturalist [ inaturalist.org/observations/2 ].

  5. @markmccaughrean

Quite a good photo given the circumstances – and a steady pulse!

Just yesterday I stumbled upon a Machimus robber fly, but it's unclear which species it is exactly. Caught it in the act of consuming a small solitary bee:

  7. Prop del cap del camí, però, una mosca d'aquelles que ni en diries mosca, certament no una mosqueta morta sinó tot el contrari: un depredador ferotge, i gros: una mosca lladre, o assassina: un asílid, Machimus rusticus.

  11. Happy #FlydayFriday! This beautiful robber fly was a great photo subject. They're not very afraid of humans. They remind me of helicopters.

  13. Apologies for the poor pictures, but here's a little bee-mimicking robber fly, after and before catching a tiny bee for dinner. I followed this wily hunter around for quite a while, and he wasn't pleased with my interference so he didn't let me get very close.

  17. CW: CW: creepy bug, also dead bug

I found a dead Beelzebub Bee-Eater (Mallophora leschenaulti) on the ground today! Poor bug has seen better days, but there's a remarkable new species for the life list.

  18. Robber fly in the Laphria canis complex, so probably not identifiable to species from just a photograph. I just love its eyes. The red object is a mite (likely Trombidiformes). Crum Woods, Swarthmore College. #RobberFly #fly #diptera #entomology #nature #mite #acari #asilidae

  20. First time seeing a robber fly inside the city. It was quite chill, I could take some close up pictures!
I also saw a Ammophila digger wasp that wasn't as chill, I could only look at it from a distance :blobcat:

  26. Is it a wasp?! No, it's a robber fly pretending to be a wasp.

This is the NZ endemic species, Saropogon antipodus (it has no common name). This is the first one I've seen.

A student on our recent ecology field trip found it on the floor of the Boyle Outdoor Education Centre, and thought it was a wasp (mimicry successful!).

There are 52 observations so far on #iNaturalist and this is the first from the Southern Alps.

  28. A tiny "gnat ogre" (a kind of robber fly) perches on the tip of a twig while waiting for dinner (a gnat, or similar-sized insect) to fly by. While he waits, an even tinier red mite snacks on HIM.
