  1. #FlyFriday: met this stunningly colourful creature in a big weedy meadow on my way to the grocery store this evening. It's _Chloromyia formosa_, the broad centurion. (Hard to see in this photo but its eyes are indeed lightly hairy, which according to BugGuide distinguishes it from the rest of its subfamily.)

  2. A female soldier fly, Nemotelus kansensis, drinking nectar from a late spring aster. Dripping Springs, Texas.

  4. trying to be perceived as a normal, friendly person by nodding and smiling as an old man passes me on the sidewalk while I'm hunched over someone's bushes next to their green bin extremely suspiciously, taking photos of flies having sex

  6. #FridayFlyday: just encountered this gorgeous metallic bronze-green-blue soldier fly (family Stratiomyidae) in the garden! It was very placid and let me get lots of photos.

  8. Friday Flyday!

Here's an insect I'd never seen before: Berkshiria albistylum. A tiny, poorly-known soldier fly. Hanging out in the yard just minding her own business.

  12. Ok - completely stuck and feeling stupid. What is this #insect that came to light in the Ikara-Flinders National Park two weeks ago?

Massive eyes and pathetically feeble legs remind me of #Stratiomyidae #Chiromyzinae, and the antennae kind of fit.

But the shapes of the head and thorax point away from #Diptera.

The horny patches at the base of the wings (I don't think they're elytra) remind me of something I can't place.

There's a lovely #weevil in the shots too.

  14. Friday Flyday! I do a double-take every time I see these. Hoplitomyia mutabilis soldier flies are excellent mimics of Mexican honey wasps.

  16. Friday Flyday! Here's a male Nemotelus soldier fly from Texas who's got his eyes on you. And everything else. Pretty much a complete surveillance unit.

  18. TGIF (thank God it's #FridayFlyDay)!

Who is this lovely large fly I often see around the garbage and green bins? Vibe: relatively placid.

*edit: thanks to @budak & @alexwild for the ID! It is the soldier fly Ptecticus, probably the only species observed in my area on BugGuide, P. trivittatus (bugguide.net/node/view/53717).

  20. CW: Glorious Fly - Insect

One of the late-flying UK #soldierflies the Twin-spot Centurion (Sargus bipunctatus).

  22. Each night I run an automated #insect light here in Canberra using a #RaspberryPi, Logitech BRIO #webcam, UV LEDs and #OpenCV image segmentation. Some example images from the night of 3/4 November: Porela delineata (#Lasiocampidae), Stenoptilia zophodactylus (#Pterophoridae), Thallarcha partita (#Erebidae, #Arctiinae) and Exaireta spinigera (#Stratiomyidae).

My hope is to build a large enough set of identified images to attempt to train a #model and move towards automated #timeseries capture.
