  1. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🦗🪐 A 324-million-year-old fossil from West #Texas, collected in 1985 and shelved in a #museum drawer for decades, was recently reexamined under polarized light and identified as "Chosha praecursor", an #insect ancestor with 24 legs. Nine pairs of paddle-like limbs may have helped it swim or scuttle through shallow seas.

  2. There were 10 species of arthropods: a bee fly species with many individuals, two of parasitic wasps (one of them superb: metallic red, blue and green, likely Succinta sp.: inaturalist.org/observations/3 ), two bees, two beetles, one ant, a true bug and a spider.

    All of them:

Quite some diversity for such a short sampling of a single tiny cluster of bushes by the sea.

  3. 💁🏻‍♀️ ICYMI: 🔬🌸 Japanese #nature photographer Pendora (ぺんどら) captures tiny globular #springtails measuring around 0.3 mm in length.

These wetland micro-arthropods display face-to-face courtship interactions and use a spring-loaded tail organ called a furcula to execute high-speed jumps that look like #teleportation.

  7. this week's feature in #CurrentBiology is about counting #insects. Just how many #species are there, and how on Earth does one arrive at a reasonable estimate for that number? Also: new species discoveries, population declines. proseandpassion.blogspot.com/2

  8. Finally, a #centipede!

People are scared when one of these fellows runs across the floor. However I think they're fascinating. This one here is a smaller species, but its relative, the Mediterraenean banded centipede, can grow to lengths up to ~18 centimetres.

  9. 📖 Further reading: The study underlines the need to re-examine the #paleoecology of these fascinating #arthropods and that additional discoveries like Polonolimulus may led to further revisions in our understanding of the #habitat and early #diversification of this group. 10. #Trilobites were primeval #arthropods, still unknown whether they belong to the ancestor lineage of #Chelicerata or all #Euarthropada. Besides their body segmentation, they possess #compoundeyes. #Asaphus #kowalewskii lived in the Ordovician and had #stalkedeyes, allowing it an overview of its surroundings even when covered with sediment.

  11. there's a mysterious
    marine chelicerate
    that's got nine eyes
    but don't lose any sleep
    those nine eyes
    can't form images
of you or me or anything
    in the deep blue sea

    there's a mysterious
    marine chelicerate
    that's got spikes
    on five pairs of thighs
    but don't lose any sleep
    all those spikes
    just break up food
    so it can eat

it's not closely related to crabs
it's not closely related to horses
and not even related to shoes

  12. Apologies for the poor pictures, but here's a little bee-mimicking robber fly, after and before catching a tiny bee for dinner. I followed this wily hunter around for quite a while, and he wasn't pleased with my interference so he didn't let me get very close.

  13. CW: Mosquito macro

Its Friday! Here's one of my local dengue vectors. If you know the genus or species, please tell me.

  15. Presenting: THE #CAMBRIANSMACKDOWN! A silly Tumblr style bracket. I will create a series of polls to determine which screwy looking Cambrian era critter is perceived as the coolest on Mastodon!
Polls will start at 7 days long.
Depending on how well-received this is, the polls may shorten in length.
Polls coming soon. Enjoy. This thread will be for bracket updates rather than the polls.

  16. Mighty #Anomalocaris stirs, spreading dust and terror throughout the #Cambrian sea. #Opabinia, #Hallucigenia, #Pikaia, #Canadia, #Burgessia, #Marella, and #Elrathia can only hope the rocks and ridges they cover behind will hide them.

Inspired by a display at the Naturkunde Museum Stuttgart that perfectly showed off the difference in size between Cambrian critters. At 40 cm, Anomalocaris was a leviathan.

  17. the crushing disappointment when you think you've found a bunch of big juicy mites and it's just some fucking beetles. no offence beetle people.

  18. I like all flies, but some are less favorite than others. Here's a perfectly adequate treehole mosquito on my hand.

  19. A tiny "gnat ogre" (a kind of robber fly) perches on the tip of a twig while waiting for dinner (a gnat, or similar-sized insect) to fly by. While he waits, an even tinier red mite snacks on HIM.
