  5. What am I missing here? I can't find anything close to this #moth from #GluepotReserve last week.

The gestalt indicates #Gelechioidea and the labial palpi are recurved but not savagely so (unlike most #Australian #Oecophoridae or #Depressariidae which were my first guesses). The black legs suggest #Xyloryctidae and it's reminiscent of some NZ Gymnobathra apart from the palpi.

There are also hints of #Erebidae, but surely not ...

  12. From my Christmas walk in High Park: I was looking at these crusty old _Daldinia_(?) and idly wondered "what's under that loose bark?" A "woolly bear", the caterpillar of the Isabella tiger moth (_Pyrrharctia isabella_).

  16. Originally only in southwest #Germany, now also in #Berlin and around my house and inside my living room. The #hoary #footman #Eilema #caniola (#Erebidae, #Lepidoptera) is a #moth that is particularly #thermophilic. Caterpillars feed mainly on #lichens.
The gradual #spread of the moth within Germany is partly well documented. In 2014 it was detected in Lower #Saxony. From 2017 in Berlin--Staaken.

  19. Each night I run an automated #insect light here in Canberra using a #RaspberryPi, Logitech BRIO #webcam, UV LEDs and #OpenCV image segmentation. Some example images from the night of 3/4 November: Porela delineata (#Lasiocampidae), Stenoptilia zophodactylus (#Pterophoridae), Thallarcha partita (#Erebidae, #Arctiinae) and Exaireta spinigera (#Stratiomyidae).

My hope is to build a large enough set of identified images to attempt to train a #model and move towards automated #timeseries capture.
