🕷️ A jumping spider that nurses its young with milk — 4x the protein of cow's milk
Female Toxeus magnus spiders secrete a milk-like fluid from their egg-laying opening for nearly 40 days after hatching. Newborns drink nothing else for the first 20 days and die within 11 days if the mother's milk supply is blocked.
Even after spiderlings learn to hunt at day 20, they keep nursing alongside their own kills for another three weeks. Daughters are allowed to return to the nest after reaching adulthood, but adult sons are attacked if they try.
This subverts the long-held assumption that lactation and extended milk-provisioning are exclusive to mammals.

A Black and yellow garden spider that caught a Common bumble bee.
There are small holes in the silk from several bites.

CW: Spider, being a spider
Heyo friends, I met a #spider!
At one point I brought the camera too close and alarmed the poor thing, but it chilled out again after I backed off. Wild to me how spikey their legs are.

Our Summer rains in Tucson bring out awesome arthropods; here are 2 of my favorites I drew in my Perpetual Journal: Red Velvet Mite & Ironclad Beetle. See more on my latest blog post https://paulaborchardt.substack.com/p/while-april-showers-bring-may-flowers

Four-spotted orb-weaver (Araneus quadratus) resting in its web among branches. This species is one of the larger orb-weavers found in Europe, with coloration that varies noticeably between individuals. Active mainly in summer and early autumn.

#ArtRepostJuly Day 28: Environment
Kinda a stretch but here's a little game project I made. And when I say "I made" I mean pretty much everything; the models, the rigs, the textures, the animations, the sound effects, the code, the environment for the spider to play in...

Why You Should Never Kill Spiders In Your Home, According To An Entomologist
Getty Images/iStockphoto I know it may be hard to convince you, but let me try: Don’t kill the next spider you see in your home. Why? Because spiders are an important part of nature and our indoor ecosystem – as well as being fellow organisms in their own right. People like to think of their dwellings as safely insulated from the outside world, but many types of spiders can be found inside. Some are accidentally trapped, while others are short-term visitors. Some species even enjoy the […] -
💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🕷️💨 The jungle #huntsman #spider from #Queensland reached 3.59 meters per second, doubling the previous #arachnid speed record.
Researchers at #Imperial College #London measured 162 #species across four #continents to study spider #locomotion. They found that longer legs relative to body size predict greater speed.

💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🕷️🕸️ Researchers from #Macquarie University discovered a new ballista #spider species in #Queensland’s #CapeYork #rainforest that builds a spring-loaded web snare targeting green tree #ants.
When an ant bites the cone, tension lines fire it into the web at 1,367 m/s² – roughly 140 G – making this the most power-dense biological catapult known. The spider’s use of pheromone-mimicking silk represents a #hunting strategy not seen before in any #arachnid.

A cellar spider (Pholcus phalangioides) wrapping up dinner. These amazing beasts can devour siders many times their size by holding supersticky silk between those long front legs and wrapping them up from a distance. This time it's a woodlouse on the menu. #Nature #WIldlife #Arachnid #Spider #Woodlouse #Macro #Photography

CW: Spider (Mr Fuzzylegs)
Mr Fuzzylegs has been wandering around by house for a few days & turning up in unexpected places. Yesterday, I accidentally put my hand on him as I was going upstairs. It turns out he also has a fuzzy butt.😆 Don't worry, we didn't hurt each other. Here he is today after collecting cobwebs.
The movie Arachnophobia made this species out to be deadly but they're actually harmless to humans.

CW: Sweet Mama to be Spider
It seems like a good day for this sweet girl. It seems like people either love or hate this group. A couple wandering spiders are known to produce enough neurotoxin to be harmful to humans, but most would be like a mild bee sting. Even after lifting the bark she hid her eggs under, she just wanted to protect them. She did chase a little, but I was quite close trying to get a picture of her face.

I have a little #Eratigenaatrica or #gianthousespider who has made a brief appearance in my bedroom two days in a row now. They’re very fast and very shy so I haven’t been able to snap a pic, but if I do is there a #SpiderSunday trend here? 😂🧐🕷️ #spider #arachnid
