Last night went out for a good bug ramble except I realized I forgot my light, so I went home and made do with my phone flash along the way. (OpenCamera has a torch flash mode where the flash is always on.)

- _Leptinotarsa_ potato beetles mating
- a huge _Clubiona_ leaf-curling sac spider eating a zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_)
- an ant war (_Tetramorium_?), this was only one of two large patches, with skirmishes up and down the sidewalk
- a *huge* sawfly larva? of some kind

Allantus viennensis (Tenthredinidae) foraging for nectar on a peony flower bud. This is one of several sawfly species that spends its larval days defoliating my roses. They also eat Rubus so I'll be watching my blackberries and raspberries carefully. I think this a bristly rose sawfly (Cladius pectinicornis), a gregarious defoliator introduced from Europe. Can also be reared on strawberry so I might try maturing some to adulthood on potted, netted plants. Males have bizarre, pectinate (comb-like) antennae. #sawflies #roses #hymenoptera #insects #rosa #pests

Not sure on the ID but possibly sawfly caterpillars on Goat Willow overhanging Mum's garden. Nearly had these in my hair when I brushed the branch while gardening.
It has been a bad year for early sawflies, hopefully this species does well

Another unusual insect: Tenthredo baetica (ssp. dominiquei), with only 118 observations world wide, of which 29 for this particular subspecies. It's a wasp – sort of: a sawfly.

The rear limbs are rather large, and I wonder why. For carrying prey?

Wildlife gardening has been very rewarding for me but it's not all shiny successes. When I first moved here the garden had been drenched in weedkiller and very little grew until the third summer. One of the first plants to recover was meadow cranesbill, aka Pig yr Aran y Weirgoldd (Geranium pratense), which is loved by pollinators but also by hungry sawfly larvae. For two years it flowered before it was eaten to skeletons by the sawfly larvae, which were then eaten in their turn by birds and predatory minibeasts. But in year three the cranesbill died back significantly and there were no flowers, partly because of the weather and partly because, following the wild plants, the plant-eater population recovers faster than the predator population. Finding a balance takes time and patience (and is ideal therapy for perfectionist tendencies, lol). Appreciating the beauty of leaves eaten into pretty lace requires adaptability, but it's worth doing.
