  1. Scientists uncover #beetle transport system for newly identified towering nematodes phys.org/news/2026-05-scientis paper: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

"In 2025, #Konstanz scientists looked very closely at rotting fruit in local orchards, and observed what no one had before–hundreds of #worms twisting skyward into self-assembled living towers... #nematodes may be trying to hitchhike on #animals to reach new habitats... Now, they identified the carriers of the original worm towers: two sap-feeding #beetles"

  2. A comprehensive #European study reveals that 70% of soils are #contaminated with #pesticide residues, which significantly suppress beneficial soil organisms like #mycorrhizal #fungi and #nematodes , thereby impairing essential soil #biodiversity and function.

  6. 🌄Atacama Desert: Nematodes thrive in extreme conditions
A new study reveals that even under harsh and extremely dry conditions, stable and surprisingly diverse soil communities exist. An international team led by researchers from the University of Cologne investigated tiny nematodes in the Chilean Atacama Desert.

  8. Mapping #Antarctica's hidden ice-free lands: A blueprint for conservation phys.org/news/2025-01-antarcti paper: nature.com/articles/s41597-025

"The ice-free lands are home to uniquely adapted flora including micro-forests of #lichens, #moss, and two flowering plants, Antarctic hairgrass and pearlwort. They also sustain a variety of #mites, #springtails, #tardigrades, #nematodes, #algae, and #microbes. #Seabirds have established breeding colonies in these areas too."

  9. Bacteria & Fungi Come Together in Endosymbiosis Study labroots.com/trending/cell-and

Inducing novel #endosymbioses by implanting bacteria in fungi nature.com/articles/s41586-024

"After several generations, the health of the #fungi began to improve. They were changing and adapting to their new resident #bacteria. The bacteria also changed. Both bacterial and fungal cells were found to produce molecules that helped the fungi collect nutrients and battle predators like #amoebae or #nematodes."

  10. Tiny #Worms Living Near #Chernobyl Have Evolved a Remarkable New Talent
#Nematodes collected from the area have shown no sign of damage to their #genomes, contrary to what might be expected for organisms living in such a dangerous place. The finding doesn't suggest the #CEZ is safe, the researchers say, but rather the worms are resilient and able to adroitly adapt to conditions that might be inhospitable to other species.

The microscopic #nematodes were successfully woken from a state of suspended animation after researchers found them in the permafrost, or frozen soil. #Radiocarbon analysis revealed that they hail from a #prehistoric era when #Neanderthals and dire wolves still roamed the world, and that they belong to a functionally extinct species called Panagrolaimus kolymaensis that was previously unknown to science

  16. The Toxin That Helps Oyster #Mushrooms Devour Worms nytimes.com/2023/01/18/science

Carnivorous #mushroom paralyzes, kills #nematodes via a volatile ketone science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

It’s not just the #OysterMushroom. Some #fungi craft sticky nets laced with tempting scents to snare their prey. Others create collars that constrict as the worm struggles, immobilizing it as the fungus’s #hyphae penetrate its body. Some release sickle-shape spores that, when swallowed by a nematode, wreak havoc from within.

  17. A carnivorous #fungus (#Pleurotus ostreatus, the common oyster #mushroom!) kills #nematodes with a toxin that paralyses the worm and triggers #apoptosis. The toxin is a ketone that is stored in toxocysts that release their content when the worm touches them.
The dissolved worm then is then fed on by the mushroom.
