On days like today, I feel like the world could use a photo of a moth that looks like a bee. Taken at my work this past September. #bugstodon #MothsOfTheFediverse #insects #bugphoto

This luna moth caterpillar is so cute. So cute! Seen at my factory this past July. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

Japanese rhino beetles AKA kabutomushi can vary surprisingly in size, and so too can their horns. (These are two males who were on the same tree at my workplace this past July.) #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

Sawfly larva charm point #3: The thing they do where they curl up into little spirals. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon #sawflies

Sawfly larva charm point #2: So many stylish polka dot patterns. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon #sawflies

Sawfly larva charm point #1: Their round heads and beady little eyes, which make them look like an adorable cartoon rendition of a caterpillar. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon #sawflies

Your daily reminder that sawfly larvae are actually dangerously adorable #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

There was another assassin bug on the next tree over, also clearly mid-molt, though for the life of me I couldn’t figure out what part of its body I was actually looking at. Then I examined it from another angle and I realized it was hanging upside down, with its head tucked into its chest! #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

Normally, the adult yokozuna assassin bug is black. But when it first molts it’s apparently a bright cherry red! I learned this when I witnessed an assassin bug molting on one of our work trees this week. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

And, uh, accidentally video taped it. #insects #aphids #bugphoto #bugstodon

CW: Pictured: the miracle of life, starring aphids
I was so focused on watching the ants interact with the aphids that I didn’t realize until reviewing the photo afterwards that one aphid was in the middle of giving birth when I photographed it. 😳 #insects #aphids #bugphoto #bugstodon

CW: Pictured: harmonious aphid-ant cohabitation
At this point I got distracted for a while taking photos of the ants interacting with the aphids. #insects #aphids #bugphoto #bugstodon

CW: Pictured: a significantly reduced density of aphids
Over the next few days, they (and their ant minders) spread out, I assume to other branches and/or trees. But some remained on this branch. #insects #aphids #bugphoto #bugstodon
-
CW: Pictured: several dozen aphids
For the first few days, they were all clustered on this one branch. I was also surprised to see that they’d already been adopted (enslaved?) by some ants.

Props to my eagle-eyed coworker for finding (and considerately alerting me to the existence of) the world’s tiniest caterpillar. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

Not pictured: the ten or so minutes in which the gecko slowly, slooowly made its approach. #reptiles #gecko #WildlifePhotography #bugphoto #bugstodon

Speaking of geckos (were we speaking of geckos? let's pretend we were), here's a video I took a little over ten years ago of a #gecko on my window ambushing and eating a moth. #reptiles #WildlifePhotography #bugstodon #bugphoto

Getting really into #cocoons lately. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

You know who else appreciate asteraceae? Taylorilygus apicalis. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon #bloomscrolling

It’s too cold for them now, but 2024 was a good year for onbu-batta sightings. (The big one is the female, and the little one is the male hitching a free ride while waiting for an opportunity to mate.) #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

I miss you (hummingbird hawk moth outside my doctor’s office in early November). #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

More cocoons #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

At the end of October, this random bush near the train station was covered in wild silkworm caterpillars. A week later, it was covered by a mix of caterpillars and cocoons. Now, only cocoons.
(It also clearly got a trim at some point, but whoever did the trimming was considerate enough to leave the cocoons alone. Thank you, whoever you are!) #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon -
This post brought to you by Lema decempunctata, a leaf beetle known for eating boxthorn shrubs which I found eating the plants growing wild at the back of our factory that turned out to be boxthorn shrubs. #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon

CW: Photo of many aphids, and also many aphid eggs.
Update: eggs have been laid! (Credit to my coworker for the photo.) #insects #bugphoto #bugstodon
