Some arachnids from today:
- young _Mangora_ orbweaver
- _Naphrys pulex_ (I think?), considering some kind of hymenopteran
- and most excitingly, Trombidiidae that aren't _Allothrombium_! I'm not quite sure whether they're both _Trombidium_, the first one is oddly not velvety at all but more rough-textured, and more flat than plump, like Smarididae if it were trombidiid-shaped. I am going to upload the pics to BugGuide to see what the experts say.#DailySpiderPic #DailyMitePic #Mitestodon #arachnids #spiders #mites #Araneae #Araneidae #Salticidae #Acari #Acariformes #Parasitengona #Trombidiidae

Have got back from a long-postponed outing to forage for seeds and berries for guerrilla native plant gardening! Goldenrod, milkweed, Virginia creeper, staghorn sumac, brown-eyed Susans, etc. I saw two cottontail rabbits and a few black-capped chickadees. Plus, this small orbweaver (_Zygiella_) nestled in a staghorn sumac (_Rhus typhina_) bob.

#Arachtober 31: handsome little ice cream sandwich boi (male _Hentzia palmarum_ jumping spider) spotted back in August.
Damn, posting every day feels like way more work than it should. Anyway back to slightly less frequent arachnid posts tomorrow…

#Arachtober 30: a lovely female hacklemesh weaver (_Amaurobius cf. ferox_) out in the open one night, rare for them. They spend most of their time in crevices in retreats of fuzzy back-combed silk that extends some way outside, letting them sense prey passing too close. People typically encounter the mature males that go wandering in search of mates and inadvertently end up inside.
The family is closely related to the funnel-weavers (family Agelenidae).

#Arachtober 29: didn't have time for a proper spider outing, so hopped over the garden wall to see what I could find in the yard—and almost walked right through this cross orbweaver's web strung between the dead coneflowers and columbines! As you can hopefully see in the close-up, her jaws are full of a big lump of mushed-up bugs.

#Arachtober 27: late October, we're getting frost warnings, but the orbweavers just keep on trucking. Taken just a few hours ago on a grocery run; the supermarket's large windows attract a lot of midges and are great scaffolds for the ubiquitous _Larinioides_ orbweavers.

It's still #Arachtober 24 somewhere: a tiny, curious zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_). It even gave me a little head tilt. WARNING: very high levels of cute

#Arachtober 22: a hobo spider, _Eratigena agrestis_ (I believe), found in a big willow tree down by the lake. These European spiders are imports to the Pacific Northwest but there are a few isolated populations elsewhere, like here in Toronto. I always get a kick out of seeing them.
Contrary to popular North American belief, they are not medically significant. They are close relatives of the native, equally harmless, and far more abundant grass spiders (genus _Agelenopsis_) and make the same flat webs with funnel-like retreats.
-
#Arachtober 19: for spooky season, here's a couple of ghost spiders (family Anyphaenidae)! The first is an adult, possibly the mother of the tiny one in the second photo. They resemble sac spiders like _Clubiona_ and _Cheiracanthium_ but with distinct patterns of markings, and as you can see they make similar silk hammock retreats, here under the leaves of a _Silphium_ cup plant.

#Arachtober 18: an Eastern parson spider (_Herpyllus ecclesiasticus_), a stealthy and fast-moving active hunter, feeding on a male _Zygiella_ missing-sector orbweaver. (This was right behind a female's web.) You can see the distinctive "knees" of the male's pedipalps in focus in the second picture.

Let's kick off #Arachtober with some fall colours! This beautiful coppery jumping spider—_Eris rufa_, maybe, or _Pelegrina_?—reminded me of autumn leaves. Tried to get an even closer pic of its iridescent scales.

An _Attulus fasciger_ jumping spider I met yesterday. I like the green shine of their eyes and their soft-looking palps.

Peanut Butter (that's what I've decided to call the _Platycryptus undatus_ who lives down the street) nabbed herself a female ant alate! I also saw more female alates in other spiders' webs, and a few that had gotten into the grocery store somehow.
Northeastern North Americans/ant people in general: anyone know which ants' nuptial flight time it is? Those yellow _Lasius_ maybe? The males (in my window orbweaver's web) seem yellow.

CW: Jumping spider feeding, totally Renfield mode
The female _P. undatus_ was out today! She looked thin to me so I resolved to get her a fly, as I was catching a few anyway for my window orbweaver. The only problem is that at home, I put the flies in the refrigerator which temporarily knocks them out, and I also have tweezers to hold them. Awake, totally-able-to-fly flies are a different story!
When I showed her a fly in a container she locked on right away, and tried to pounce on it. Opening the little plastic container a crack did not work, as jumping spiders' hunting method is to pounce on prey from a distance, not grabbing it through a small opening. If I opened it further, the fly simply wriggled out and flew away. What worked was carefully opening the container and putting it over her while the fly was at the non-open end. She quickly caught the fly and I took away the container so she could retire with her prize.

Today in the park, I noticed a lot of small flies around this one unhealthy-looking plant, a mint of some kind, that had been put outside the greenhouse. I looked closer to find…a flower crab spider (family Thomisidae, tribe Misumenini) feeding on a plant bug (family Miridae)! The small flies are kleptoparasites trying to get a bite of the spider's meal. It periodically flicked the flies away with its spare legs and moved around to get away from them, in vain.
I don't see flower crab spiders that often so this was a nice find.

Yesterday I went to the big No Frills to get peanut butter as it was on sale, but it was sold out. In the evening I was like, let's try the No Frills near me. As I was passing a concrete pillar just down the street, I saw a surprisingly large jumping spider, the same pale grey as the concrete, cautiously emerging from a crack!
I had found a _Platycryptus undatus_ before, but a male one (they have reddish faces), which I guess must be much smaller. This one was as big as a bold jumper!
A common name is "tan jumping spider", but they are not necessarily tan-coloured, as you can see.
P.S. The other store did have the peanut butter.

The broad, dense canopies of tansy flowers (_Tanasetum_) are a perfect home for small jumping spiders like this juvenile bold jumper (_Phidippus audax_)!

gotta stay on brand
here's a sidewalk mite (_Balaustium_) feeding on some predatory mite, Rhagidiidae or Cunaxidae or thereabouts; and an _Admestina_ jumping spider I found near pine trees in a nearby park. I find such interesting arthropods around pines that I don't see anywhere else.

I think of this _Larinioides_ colouration as "white chocolate". The spiders in this genus I see in my area range from almost black to grey to orange-brown to peach to beige to, like this one, almost white.
-
found another pair of mating leaf-curling sac spiders (family Clubionidae)!
The bubble-like thing in the first picture is the haematodocha, a sac in the male's palpal bulb that inflates to change the orientation/shape of the pedipalp to allow it to lock in to the female's convoluted genital opening.

Yesterday I was going up to a park bench to lock my bike to it when I saw the most enormous bold jumping spider (_Phidippus audax_) poking her head out from between two slats. She had a spacious silk retreat with a well-wrapped egg sac. She was shy, but I gradually lured her out by lightly dragging a blade of grass across one opening of the retreat, and she stalked and pounced on it, like a cat.
I find that contrary to their name bold jumpers are very shy at first, but once they've gotten used to you they are unafraid and will climb all over you. Unfortunately I didn't have time to properly make friends with this spider.

#SpiderSunday: A male _Habronattus decorus_ on the western shore of Tommy Thompson Park! I have only found these before on the City Hall green roof. The females have camouflaging brown patterns, but the males have a silvery-white cephalothorax and iridescent abdomen that shifts between orange-red and purple-red. And like all jumping spiders, their large front middle eyes give them a cute and charismatic aura.

#DailySpiderPic: a sleek-coated Eastern parson spider (_Herpyllus ecclesiasticus_, in the ground spider family Gnaphosidae) on a big willow tree. These spiders are lightning-fast. I typically spot them while quickly waving my phone flashlight over tree trunks—then I know I have one more chance to get a photo, and need to hurriedly get everything into position before turning on the light. I usually only get one or two shots, then they're gone.

#DailySpiderPic: "Well, this is awkward…" An ant-mimic jumping spider (_Synageles_) crosses paths with a _Prenolepis imparis_ ant. Its disguise is meant to put off potential predators that won't mess with ants—but the ants themselves rely more on chemical cues and aren't fooled. I saw a couple of _Synageles_ on this planter and they both carefully avoided the ants.

A pair of mating leaf-curling sac spiders (_Clubiona_) from last night!
The male is reaching his left pedipalp underneath the female to transfer sperm to the corresponding reproductive opening (she has one on each side). The pale balloon-like structure visible in the last photo is one of the haematodochae on the pedipalp. The haematodocha is an inflatable sac or membrane that rotates various bits of the palpal bulb so it can kind of lock in. Video in next post.

CW: Absolutely 100% an ant, nothing to see here

I grabbed a large male midge from a wall nearby—they're still swarming—and slowly waved it in front of the hole. A surprisingly large bold jumping spider (_Phidippus audax_) emerged, seized it from my fingers, and went back in. Then she turned around and sat as before, with her head just out of the hole, eating the midge. (2/2)

I almost forgot it was #MiteMonday! Inspired by @zorbama's shot of a running crab spider, clover mite, and midge all together (https://veganism.social/@zorbama/114373000260983349), here's a running crab spider (_Philodromus_) I found feeding on a clover mite (_Bryobia_). I don't actually often find many arthropods feeding on the adults, though I've seen predatory _Anystis_ mites eating the eggs.

Got quite the shock just now when I saw my pet _Parasteatoda_ had made an egg sac!!
She has molted since I caught her, so it's not fertilized, she just made it on her own initiative. I didn't think she was full grown! I'm just very surprised. Uh…happy Valentine's Day?
