- young _Mangora_ orbweaver
- _Naphrys pulex_ (I think?), considering some kind of hymenopteran
- and most excitingly, Trombidiidae that aren't _Allothrombium_! I'm not quite sure whether they're both _Trombidium_, the first one is oddly not velvety at all but more rough-textured, and more flat than plump, like Smarididae if it were trombidiid-shaped. I am going to upload the pics to BugGuide to see what the experts say.

@JeffWestPhotography not a woodlouse spider but some kind of orbweaver (family #Araneidae)! Would need geographic location to properly ID it.

Have got back from a long-postponed outing to forage for seeds and berries for guerrilla native plant gardening! Goldenrod, milkweed, Virginia creeper, staghorn sumac, brown-eyed Susans, etc. I saw two cottontail rabbits and a few black-capped chickadees. Plus, this small orbweaver (_Zygiella_) nestled in a staghorn sumac (_Rhus typhina_) bob.

#Arachtober 29: didn't have time for a proper spider outing, so hopped over the garden wall to see what I could find in the yard—and almost walked right through this cross orbweaver's web strung between the dead coneflowers and columbines! As you can hopefully see in the close-up, her jaws are full of a big lump of mushed-up bugs.

#Arachtober 27: late October, we're getting frost warnings, but the orbweavers just keep on trucking. Taken just a few hours ago on a grocery run; the supermarket's large windows attract a lot of midges and are great scaffolds for the ubiquitous _Larinioides_ orbweavers.

#Arachtober 18: an Eastern parson spider (_Herpyllus ecclesiasticus_), a stealthy and fast-moving active hunter, feeding on a male _Zygiella_ missing-sector orbweaver. (This was right behind a female's web.) You can see the distinctive "knees" of the male's pedipalps in focus in the second picture.

#Arachtober 15: it's _Zygiella_ courtship season! The males hang around the edges of the females' webs, plucking and strumming rhythmically to communicate. Here's a male with his long "elbowed" pedipalps; a female; and a cobweb spider preying on an unlucky male suitor who got too close.

#Arachtober 9: a very cool orbweaver, _Gea heptagon_! Named because of its seven-pointed abdomen. So far I have only found them low among the grass in a particular marshy meadow. The juveniles have similar circular web decorations as young _Argiope_.

I think of this _Larinioides_ colouration as "white chocolate". The spiders in this genus I see in my area range from almost black to grey to orange-brown to peach to beige to, like this one, almost white.

It's that time of the week again: time to feed the spiders. I think the cellar spider (_Pholcus_) in the jar won't need food for a while—I've never seen one so fat! I also managed to get three fruit flies into the orbweaver's (_Larinioides_') web with tweezers.

A large crop of fruit flies (_Drosophila hydei_) hatched today. Coincidentally I noticed a tiny orbweaver, barely more than a spiderling, had made a web on the inside of my window, so I carefully used a paintbrush to hold a fruit fly in the web, which it promptly took.

I had also found a smallish cellar spider under the shelves I use as a nightstand, so I moved it into the large jar I had used for the black widow, and, after giving it some time to acclimate, put in several fruit flies. It has already caught and wrapped up three. (Cellar spiders are well known to be impressive hunters.)

Neither are large enough to eat more than a few fruit flies a week, so if I want to make a dent in the flies I must search the apartment for more spiders…

Belated #Arachtober 29 because I got vertigo yesterday: missing-sector orbweaver (_Zygiella_) male and female. I think these are _Z. x-notata_? The males wait patiently on the periphery of the females' webs, plucking out little guitar solos. I wish I could have gotten a video for you all, but it was a windy night and everything was too blurry/shaky.

#Arachtober 25: this beautiful _Larinioides_' camouflage was so good that I was prying open a dead Queen Anne's Lace flower to see if there was a spider inside before I realized she was sitting on top of it, eating an aphid!

This time of year down by the lake, the red pines with their thick needles are absolutely covered with missing-sector orbweavers (_Zygiella_). The needle-sprays are the perfect size for their modestly sized, taut orb webs and the bases of the needles are ideal shelter.

When I took this picture, all I saw was the dead orbweaver with its abdomen covered with mold. Only later I noticed the little _Theridion_ cobweb spider perched back-to-back with it!

The orbweaver isn't curled up like dead spiders normally are. Perhaps this fungus is an entomopathogenic one that parasitized and paralyzed the spider before it died.
