  6. Why are some people #mosquito magnets? Clues are emerging
It's not a misconception -- mosquitoes are attracted to some people more than others," Frederic Simard of France's Institute of Research for Development told AFP. "But we are not all magnets all the time," the medical #entomologist added.
A range of sensory cues can cause #mosquitoes to pick one human over another—mainly the smell and heat our bodies give off, and the carbon dioxide we exhale.

  11. I'm trying out a new mosquito-control contraption made by Ortho. It features a landing pad laced with powderized, lethal fungus spores (Beauveria bassiana) that can be transferred via tarsi to standing water elsewhere in the yard or in your neighbors' yards. The water in the container also has an insecticide (pyriproxyfen) to kill any larvae that might develop from eggs left by females. It's the home version of the expensive In2Care trap that can only be purchased by licensed pest-control folks. #mosquitoes #ortho #in2care

Not only is the article full of excellent suggestions from experts, it's noteworthy that spraying yards with pyrethroids is never mentioned. That's likely because experts view it as a waste of money. 27. 🦟 Bedtime Story: “Why Mosquitoes Suck Blood” 🌙

Once upon a time in the land of tiny insects, there was a young mosquito named Mimi.

Mimi loved flying around flowers and drinking sweet nectar like everyone else 🌸

But one day, Mama Mosquito called all the young mosquitoes together and said, “From today, only the girls must learn a special task.”

Mimi was confused. “Why?” she asked.

Mama smiled gently. “Because baby mosquitoes need strong food to grow their eggs. Flower juice is sweet, but it is not enough. So we must take a tiny drop of blood from animals to help our babies grow.” 🥚

Mimi didn’t like the idea at first, but she learned that it wasn’t about hurting others… it was about survival and life continuing in nature 🌿

From that day, Mimi understood her purpose, but she always tried to be gentle and quick so she wouldn’t disturb anyone too much 🦟✨

And that is why mosquitoes behave the way they do in nature…

    The end 🌙

  29. 🦟 Why do mosquitoes suck human blood?

Long ago in nature’s story, mosquitoes didn’t all feed on blood. In fact, only the females became “blood seekers” over time.

    Here’s the simple reason 👇

Female mosquitoes need protein and iron to develop their eggs 🥚
Blood provides the nutrients they cannot get from plant nectar alone 🌿

So when a female mosquito bites, it’s not “hunger” like a predator… it’s biology trying to create the next generation.

But the bite itself is actually a survival strategy that evolved over time through natural selection and adaptation 🧬

Nature is wild… even tiny insects have complex reasons for what they do 🤯

  31. To amuse myself I'm evaluating baits for mosquito-killing buckets: oak leaves, straw, log, and beetroot skins. Leaves and straw are standards but I'm curious whether I can attract tree-hole species (e.g., Aedes triseriatus) with the partially submerged wood. And beets are packed with geosmin (a sesquiterpenoid), a known oviposition attractant. Stay tuned. #mosquitoes #science #biology #entomology

  37. Local folks: What are mosquitoes looking like for you so far this year? I put our mosquito trap buckets out maybe 6 weeks ago. It's also been really dry. I killed a mosquito on myself today for the first time — inside, oddly. Anyway, I don't really remember when the mosquitoes start up anymore. Have any of you noticed mosquitoes yet? Have you noticed a lot, a few, or is it just average so far? 🦟 #DurhamNC #RTP #mosquitoes
