Anniversaries pass me by at an alarming rate now. I suspect it's something to do with getting old. I much preferred it when my favourite TV series and movies were celebrating their 10th anniversaries!
Back when Star Trek celebrated its 20th, that felt like an enormous stretch of time. And now here we are at the 60th... goodness, where did the time go?

This Channel 4 continuity card has haunted me since 1983. I always thought it looked like something Terry Gilliam might have come up with. I half expected McGoohan's eyes to start darting about, his jaw to drop open, and something Monty Python-ish to ensue. Perhaps McGoohan's head would bounce off his shoulders and chase Rover around the screen!
Quite gave me the heebie-jeebies, it did. Still does, in fact.

Two things that sci-fi fans of my vintage used to do that are now obsolete. One was holding a microphone up to the television's speaker to record an episode of Doctor Who or Star Trek. The other was taking photographs of the telly.

I was sorry to hear that Antoinette Bower has passed away. She was a familiar face on television back in the 1960s and '70s. For fans of the fantastical, she cropped up in episodes of The Wild, Wild West, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Invaders. But perhaps her two most famous genre appearances were in the The Twilight Zone episode Probe 7, Over and Out, and as the shape-shifting Sylvia in Star Trek's Catspaw.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Logan's Run, released on 23 June 1976.
My strongest memory of the film is that, back in the 1970s, I owned a very truncated Super 8 version which I used to show to my friends on a projector. It proved remarkably popular thanks to one scene featuring Jenny Agutter shedding her clothes. What can I say? We were schoolboys!
Fifty years later, I still think the film stands up remarkably well.

Remembering Irwin Allen, who was born 110 years ago today. Flawed though his sci-fi productions were, they gave me a great deal of joy growing up, especially The Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants.
Here he is directing Don Marshall and Gary Conway on the set of the very first episode of Land of the Giants. The fact that the Spindrift crash-landed on the giant world on 12 June was a deliberate in-joke.

Here we have a promotional Land of the Giants badge. Well, here in the UK we'd call it a badge; in the States it's a button or a pin. Whatever you want to call it, it was produced in the 1960s, and as a little boy I would have worn it proudly if only it had been available in the UK.
I have to say, though, the wording puzzles me. Why has "are" been changed to "is"? This might be a question that one of my American friends can answer for me.

A very happy 91st birthday to Lee Meriwether!
Lovely Lee has appeared in many of my favourite TV series and films, including, of course, Star Trek and Batman (as far as I’m concerned, she is still the best movie Catwoman). But it was when Lee played Dr Ann MacGregor on The Time Tunnel that a very young Roo first lost his heart to her.
All my very best wishes to a very special lady.

As a boy, I learned to draw the TARDIS from illustrations in the Doctor Who Annuals from the Patrick Troughton era. My TARDISes always had those ‘stabiliser’ blocks on the front and the wrong number of windows on the side. It was only many years later, when I saw the publicity photos of Jackie Lane posing beside the hastily constructed stand-in TARDIS prop, that I realised where those bloomin’ stabilisers had come from. 🙂

I hate it when my page starts looking like an obituary column, but I'm very sorry to hear that Jill Curzon has passed away. Fans of the Peter Cushing Dalek movies will remember her as Louise in Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.

I’ve heard the spaceship referred to as both Icarus and Liberty 1, though neither name is actually used in the film itself. Icarus seems to be a fan invention, while Liberty 1 turned up in a special feature on the 2008 Blu-ray box set.
Liberty 1 has a certain irony given the film’s ending, but I can just as easily imagine the ever-cynical Taylor nicknaming his ship Icarus.

Jules Lermina’s Panic in Paris was published in 1913. It’s a French scientific romance.
Translator Brian Stableford describes it as being closer in feel to 1950s Japanese monster movies than to the more sober scientific romances of Lermina’s contemporaries. In fact it's a madcap tongue-in-cheek romp. There are even dinosaurs in 19th century Paris.

News from the Moon, edited by Brian Stableford, a collection of nine French 19th century “proto-science fiction tales”. Many won’t fit most people’s ideas of what constitutes scifi but that’s Stableford’s point - there was a distinctive school of French speculative fiction at that time that differed from the contemporary scientific romances of British authors.
The stories are unconventional but stimulating.
