  1. Quatermass and the Pit (1958) — ★★★★ — I first saw this as a kid and loved it; discovering it's on Fawesome made it the perfect excuse for a rewatch. letterboxd.com/blazingminds/fi #QuatermassAndThePit #ClassicSciFi #Rewatch #1958 #Letterboxd

  2. 10 August 1966: During a break in the filming of Dagger of the Mind, William Shatner records Star Trek's famous opening narration for the first time.

"Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before."

  3. The Time Tunnel celebrates its 60th anniversary next month. But if you get MeTV and want to start celebrating early, Dr Tony Newman will be activating The Time Tunnel again at 4am Eastern / 3am Central early Sunday, 8/9, on MeTV (4am Pacific / 3am Mountain on the western feed).

  4. Remembering Irwin Allen, who was born 110 years ago today. Flawed though his sci-fi productions were, they gave me a great deal of joy growing up, especially The Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants.

Here he is directing Don Marshall and Gary Conway on the set of the very first episode of Land of the Giants. The fact that the Spindrift crash-landed on the giant world on 12 June was a deliberate in-joke.

  5. Although I've always considered Tom Baker "my" Doctor Who, I've grown very fond of Sylvester McCoy, the seventh doctor, in recent years. His nemesis, the Rani, is my favorite Whovian villain and his companion Mel reminds me of a friend of my youth, Beth Kibler. #doctorwho #doctorwhoepisodes #classictv #classictelevision #scifi #sciencefiction #classicsciencefiction #classicscifi #vintagesciencefiction #vintagescifi #sylvestermccoy #tombaker #britishtv #britishtelevision #englishtv

  6. As a boy, I learned to draw the TARDIS from illustrations in the Doctor Who Annuals from the Patrick Troughton era. My TARDISes always had those ‘stabiliser’ blocks on the front and the wrong number of windows on the side. It was only many years later, when I saw the publicity photos of Jackie Lane posing beside the hastily constructed stand-in TARDIS prop, that I realised where those bloomin’ stabilisers had come from. 🙂

  7. Even as a kid, some things just looked wrong. Case in point: this TARDIS Commander badge. It was originally merchandise for the 1972 BBC TV Visual Effects exhibition at the Science Museum in London, but they must have had plenty left over, because they were still available to buy at the Doctor Who exhibition in Blackpool a couple of years later.

  8. I hate it when my page starts looking like an obituary column, but I'm very sorry to hear that Jill Curzon has passed away. Fans of the Peter Cushing Dalek movies will remember her as Louise in Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.

    R.I.P.

  9. ALTHEA
Look, why don't you let me tell
the Captain that you didn't mean
what you said and that you
    won't mention it again.

    TONY
I can't promise that, Althea. Not
when I know what's going to happen.

    ALTHEA
You don't know! Nobody knows. You can't!

Many happy returns to Susan Hampshire, Althea Hall in the pilot episode of The Time Tunnel, "Rendezvous with Yesterday".

  11. Happy Birthday to George Takei and Louise Jameson.

Sulu and Leela. Oh my, what a multidimensional adventure that would be!

  12. @IanAMartin LOL, yes.

I’ve heard the spaceship referred to as both Icarus and Liberty 1, though neither name is actually used in the film itself. Icarus seems to be a fan invention, while Liberty 1 turned up in a special feature on the 2008 Blu-ray box set.

Liberty 1 has a certain irony given the film’s ending, but I can just as easily imagine the ever-cynical Taylor nicknaming his ship Icarus.

  13. I’m always posting anniversaries and birthdays, but some are a little more special to me than others. Case in point…

Happy 81st birthday to Heather Young, aka ‘Spindrift’ stewardess Betty Hamilton from Land of the Giants — one of my earliest crushes.

  14. A nice find while out toy hunting yesterday. Rather appropriate, too, as it coincided with Leonard Nimoy’s birthday.

    The Three Spocktors.

  15. I can’t let the day end without remembering Leonard Nimoy on what would have been his 95th birthday.

Actually, it’s been a bit of a Spocky day today, but it’s late, I’m old and I’m tired, so I’ll tell you about it tomorrow (it’s nothing exciting – don’t let it keep you awake). But, yeah… a little bit Spocky-wocky.

  16. It’s another beautiful day in The Village.

(This picture always reminds me of Jerry peeking his head out of his mousehole to see if Tom is around.)

  17. 21st March 1981. In the shadow of the towering radio telescope, a body lies crumpled and broken. The curly-haired man, dressed in a burgundy coat and a ridiculously long scarf, is the Doctor, and he is dying.

“It’s the end, but the moment has been prepared for…”

You can keep your CGI firework displays. Forty-five years on, this is still the best regeneration.

  18. A very happy birthday to Conrad Turner, a.k.a. Captain Black. Born in Manchester in 2029… oh.

I’ll get back to you in a couple of years.
