  1. ALTHEA
Look, why don't you let me tell
the Captain that you didn't mean
what you said and that you
    won't mention it again.

    TONY
I can't promise that, Althea. Not
when I know what's going to happen.

    ALTHEA
You don't know! Nobody knows. You can't!

Many happy returns to Susan Hampshire, Althea Hall in the pilot episode of The Time Tunnel, "Rendezvous with Yesterday".

  2. Vintage advertisement for The Time Tunnel, featuring James Darren in the natty white jumpsuit he wore in the pilot, posing beside AN/FSQ-7 computer control panels. Those AN/FSQ-7 panels cropped up in many a sci-fi series and movie, but for me they’ll always be the heart of Project Tic-Toc.

  3. I used to love this show, and the other two shared productions.

As an 8-9 year old, they were more fun than the much more serious in tone, Star Trek, which I also enjoyed.

When the douchebros complain about effects in tv and movies now, I roll my eyes over their ignorance and wish for the bros to disappear.

  4. Remembering James Darren, my childhood hero from The Time Tunnel, on what would have been his 89th birthday.

  5. A very happy 90th birthday to Lee Meriwether!

Lovely Lee has appeared in many of my favourite TV series and films, including, of course, Star Trek and Batman (as far as I’m concerned, she is still the best movie Catwoman). But it was when Lee played Dr Ann MacGregor on The Time Tunnel that a very young Roo first lost his heart to her.

All my very best wishes to a very special lady.

  6. Meanwhile, at Project Tic-Toc...

The Time Tunnel team might be struggling to retrieve James Darren, but at least they’ve managed to snag some cups and saucers from the Titanic.

  7. The early morning hours of 15 April 1912, and time is running out for time-tunnellers Doug Phillips and Tony Newman, who remain trapped aboard the sinking RMS Titanic. Only a desperate gamble by their colleagues back at Project Tic-Toc can save them.

  8. "I've no right to take a place in one of those lifeboats..."

April 15th, 1912: As the Titanic continues to sink, Tony (James Darren) attempts to convince a reluctant Althea (Susan Hampshire) that her life is worth saving.

  9. "It occurs to me now you may even know whether I will die tonight"

Aboard the sinking RMS Titanic, time travellers Tony Newman (James Darren) and Doug Phillips (Robert Colbert) have a difficult conversation with Captain Smith (Michael Rennie).

  10. @karlos During the course of The Time Tunnel's run, Doug and Tony don't hesitate to use guns when they are forced to. Thankfully, as The Time Tunnel universe was governed by the self-consistency principle, our heroes are unable to create paradoxes or alternate time-lines. The can't change history because they were always a part of it (something the writers of the Big Finish reboot completely failed to understand).

  11. Who wore it better?

Dick York as Darrin the Bold in a third season episode of Bewitched, 'A Most Unusual Wood Nymph,' which originally aired 13th October, 1966.

Robert Colbert as Dr Doug Phillips in the 'Merlin the Magician' episode of The Time Tunnel, which aired 17th March, 1967.

  12. Just finished watching The Time Tunnel episode, 'Chase Through Time,' and I got to wondering if guest star Vitina Marcus is still with us. Turns out she is and it was actually her 88th birthday yesterday!

Vitina is probably better known to fans of classic Sci-Fi as Athena, 'The Girl from the Green Dimension' in Lost in Space, but here she is in gold face-paint instead from the aforementioned episode of The Time Tunnel.

  13. Legendary Television and Akiva Goldsman will be developing new versions of classic TV series 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", "Land of the Giants" and "The Time Tunnel", possibly creating a shared universe.

  14. @karlos If you don't want to watch all 30 episodes of The Time Tunnel before trying the Big Finish series, I would suggest you at least watch the pilot, 'Rendezvous with Yesterday,' and an episode called 'Secret Weapon.'

The first episode will introduce you to the original characters and the basic premise. 'Secret Weapon' is set in Rakervia (though it wasn't called that in the episode), which is important to the audio series.

  15. Before he hit the big time, John Williams was Johnny Williams, and he composed the theme tunes for Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants. Here he is letting the creator of those series, Irwin Allen, play with his baton (I suspect there's a crude joke there, but I'm really not the sort of chap to make it).

Happy Birthday, Johnny... John.... Mr Williams... Sir!

  16. I remember getting ridiculously excited on New Year's Day, 1971, because Granada TV had scheduled a random episode of The Time Tunnel to air. My then local ITV station had dumped the series the previous September, after a run of eleven episodes, so 9 year-old me was really hoping the series was back again. Well, it was and it wasn't. The Time Tunnel DID return - but for only two weeks in November, 1971, and that was it.

  17. Jenny Agutter, Alexei Sayle and Peter Capaldi in 'Drunk in Time,' Sayle's glorious spoof of The Time Tunnel.

Back in 1995, I saw this publicity photo in a TV Guide. As I am somewhat obsessed with The Time Tunnel, I wrote a desperate begging letter to the magazine asking, pretty please, if I might have the picture.

Note: The information card is actually on the back of the photo, but I thought I'd include it for posterity.

  18. My Saturday morning double bill: Star Trek engages in an 'Errand of Mercy' while The Time Tunnel visits 'The Alamo.'

Both episodes were filmed on the same set. The Time Tunnel used the disused fort set on the Desilu 40 Acres lot in October 1966. Star Trek filmed there two months later, in January 1967 (previous to that, portions of the set had appeared in the Rigel VII scene from 'The Cage').

  19. Today is the 115th anniversary of actor Whit Bissell's birth.

If, like me, you grew up watching television in the 1960s and '70s, you'll know that Whit Bissell seemed to crop up in every American TV series going. Of course, it is his role as Lt. General Heywood 'Woody' Kirk in The Time Tunnel that is my favourite.

When I was a boy, General Kirk seemed ancient. Now, I'm actually older than Whit was when he filmed the series...yikes!

  20. @speckledband

Good old Kevin Hagen, he played four different characters in The Time Tunnel. On this occasion, he was called in at short notice to replace Vic Lundin, who dropped out of playing the Planet Leader for reasons unknown.

Hagen later recalled, "I almost went up in flames when my giant alien brain caught fire in a special effects stunt gone awry!"

  22. 📺 The Death Merchant (The Time Tunnel, March 1967): Ending up on different sides just prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, Doug and Tony must stop an attempt by Machiavelli (who had somehow travelled in time from the Renaissance due to the Time Tunnel Project) to affect the outcome of the battle - and send him back to his own era. Malachi Throne plays scheming Machiavelli.

  23. 🦖 Chase Through Time (The Time Tunnel, 1967) features Robert Duvall as a foreign agent who tries to destroy Tic Toc HQ - then disappears into the Time Tunnel. The time travellers give chase, ultimately into a long-ago land of dinosaurs - and giant bees… RIP James Darren (Dr Tony Newman) #thetimetunnel #timetunnel #television #1960s #60s #scifi #robertduvall

  24. The Time Tunnel is a sci-fi classic that is particularly dear to my heart. I've been a fan since I first saw the series, back when I was a very young lad in the 1960s, and I remain so all these decades later. That being the case, I am truly heartbroken to hear that one of its stars, James Darren, has passed away.

  25. 🔴 In Devil’s Island (The Time Tunnel, November 1966), Dr Doug Phillips (Robert Colbert) and Dr Tony Newman (James Darren) are transported to 1895 to the French penal colony of Devil's Island, in French Guiana. Opened in 1852, it had a 75 per cent death rate among inmates. #thetimetunnel #television #1960s #60s #stevemcqueen #prisoner #DevilsIsland #timetunnel #retro #TimeTravel #Dreyfus #history #france #papillon
