  1. ALTHEA
Look, why don't you let me tell
the Captain that you didn't mean
what you said and that you
    won't mention it again.

    TONY
I can't promise that, Althea. Not
when I know what's going to happen.

    ALTHEA
You don't know! Nobody knows. You can't!

Many happy returns to Susan Hampshire, Althea Hall in the pilot episode of The Time Tunnel, "Rendezvous with Yesterday".

  2. I’m always posting anniversaries and birthdays, but some are a little more special to me than others. Case in point…

Happy 81st birthday to Heather Young, aka ‘Spindrift’ stewardess Betty Hamilton from Land of the Giants — one of my earliest crushes.

  3. A very happy 90th birthday to Gary Conway — actor, writer, artist, and so much more. He’s the very definition of a Renaissance man.

On top of his many talents and accomplishments, for my generation Mr Conway will always have a special place in our hearts as Captain Steve Burton, leader of the diminutive Earth people trapped in the Land of the Giants.

    All the very best, sir.

  4. Vintage advertisement for The Time Tunnel, featuring James Darren in the natty white jumpsuit he wore in the pilot, posing beside AN/FSQ-7 computer control panels. Those AN/FSQ-7 panels cropped up in many a sci-fi series and movie, but for me they’ll always be the heart of Project Tic-Toc.

  5. I used to love this show, and the other two shared productions.

As an 8-9 year old, they were more fun than the much more serious in tone, Star Trek, which I also enjoyed.

When the douchebros complain about effects in tv and movies now, I roll my eyes over their ignorance and wish for the bros to disappear.

  11. I must confess that I was never much of a fan of Lost in Space, however, happy birthday to June Lockhart as she turns 100 today.

    Here's to you, Mrs Robinson.

  13. Remembering James Darren, my childhood hero from The Time Tunnel, on what would have been his 89th birthday.

  14. Meanwhile, at Project Tic-Toc...

The Time Tunnel team might be struggling to retrieve James Darren, but at least they’ve managed to snag some cups and saucers from the Titanic.

  16. Land of the Giants listing from TV Times, dated 28th April, 1972.

My nine year-old self was delighted by the publicity picture. Such things were to be treasured back then, and I recall carefully cutting this one out and pasting it into my scrapbook.

Funnily enough, the exact same picture appeared in TV Times the following week. That was fine, though—I could never have too many pictures of Land of the Giants.

  17. The early morning hours of 15 April 1912, and time is running out for time-tunnellers Doug Phillips and Tony Newman, who remain trapped aboard the sinking RMS Titanic. Only a desperate gamble by their colleagues back at Project Tic-Toc can save them.

  18. "I've no right to take a place in one of those lifeboats..."

April 15th, 1912: As the Titanic continues to sink, Tony (James Darren) attempts to convince a reluctant Althea (Susan Hampshire) that her life is worth saving.

  19. "It occurs to me now you may even know whether I will die tonight"

Aboard the sinking RMS Titanic, time travellers Tony Newman (James Darren) and Doug Phillips (Robert Colbert) have a difficult conversation with Captain Smith (Michael Rennie).

  20. @karlos During the course of The Time Tunnel's run, Doug and Tony don't hesitate to use guns when they are forced to. Thankfully, as The Time Tunnel universe was governed by the self-consistency principle, our heroes are unable to create paradoxes or alternate time-lines. The can't change history because they were always a part of it (something the writers of the Big Finish reboot completely failed to understand).

  22. Who wore it better?

Dick York as Darrin the Bold in a third season episode of Bewitched, 'A Most Unusual Wood Nymph,' which originally aired 13th October, 1966.

Robert Colbert as Dr Doug Phillips in the 'Merlin the Magician' episode of The Time Tunnel, which aired 17th March, 1967.

  23. Just finished watching The Time Tunnel episode, 'Chase Through Time,' and I got to wondering if guest star Vitina Marcus is still with us. Turns out she is and it was actually her 88th birthday yesterday!

Vitina is probably better known to fans of classic Sci-Fi as Athena, 'The Girl from the Green Dimension' in Lost in Space, but here she is in gold face-paint instead from the aforementioned episode of The Time Tunnel.

    #TheTimeTunnel #VitinaMarcus #JamesDarren #RetroSciFi #IrwinAllen

  24. @karlos If you don't want to watch all 30 episodes of The Time Tunnel before trying the Big Finish series, I would suggest you at least watch the pilot, 'Rendezvous with Yesterday,' and an episode called 'Secret Weapon.'

The first episode will introduce you to the original characters and the basic premise. 'Secret Weapon' is set in Rakervia (though it wasn't called that in the episode), which is important to the audio series.

  25. Before he hit the big time, John Williams was Johnny Williams, and he composed the theme tunes for Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants. Here he is letting the creator of those series, Irwin Allen, play with his baton (I suspect there's a crude joke there, but I'm really not the sort of chap to make it).

Happy Birthday, Johnny... John.... Mr Williams... Sir!

  27. I remember getting ridiculously excited on New Year's Day, 1971, because Granada TV had scheduled a random episode of The Time Tunnel to air. My then local ITV station had dumped the series the previous September, after a run of eleven episodes, so 9 year-old me was really hoping the series was back again. Well, it was and it wasn't. The Time Tunnel DID return - but for only two weeks in November, 1971, and that was it.

  28. My first exposure to Land of the Giants was as a weekly two page picture-strip in 'Joe 90: Top Secret' comic, published in 1969.*

Throughout the strip's run, the Spindrift was mistakenly referred to as the Spendthrift. The name stuck with me and, even now, all these decades later, I occasionally catch myself writing Spendthrift instead of Spindrift.

*Where I lived we didn't get the TV series until 1972.

  29. What's that you say? Post a picture of a spaceship that isn't from Star Trek or Star Wars. If you insist...

My all time favourite fictional spaceship is the Spindrift from Land of the Giants. Okay, the Spindrift didn't do much flying through space as it crashed in the first episode, but it's a gorgeous design with similarities to the Flying Sub from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and the Proteus from Fantastic Voyage.

  30. This comic-strip from TV21 was the closest the Earth people ever got to escaping the Land of the Giants in either the comic or on television. Of course, whenever victory was in their grasp, cruel fate always seemed to intercede to keep the Earthlings stranded, and this would be no exception...

  32. On Sunday mornings I like to relive my youth by re-reading old TV21 comics. I'm into the 'new series' now, which was after TV21 merged with Joe 90 comic. Even at the time I knew TV21's glory days were over. I was mainly buying the comic for the Land of the Giants and Star Trek strips.

This was my favourite Land of the Giants cover and story from that era.

    TV21 & Joe 90 issue 15, January, 1970.

  34. @speckledband

Good old Kevin Hagen, he played four different characters in The Time Tunnel. On this occasion, he was called in at short notice to replace Vic Lundin, who dropped out of playing the Planet Leader for reasons unknown.

Hagen later recalled, "I almost went up in flames when my giant alien brain caught fire in a special effects stunt gone awry!"

  35. Land of the Giants (1968) is much better than you might expect.

It cost a fortune to make and it was money well spent. The special effects work very well.

The setup is reminiscent of Allen’s earlier Lost in Space - a small group of people stranded on an alien hostile planet. Except it's a planet of giants.

The setup is exploited skilfully, with some interesting doubts raised. Good stuff.

  36. Land of the Giants (1968) is much better than it has any right to be. Far-fetched but skilfully executed, the effects are mostly very well done (certainly by the standards of 60s network television). It cost a fortune to make, and it was money well spent.

The central premise is exploited cleverly.
