Come and join fellow Europeans on a short Rejoin EU Ramble in Farnham on Saturday 5th September 2026. Similar rambles will be taking place all over the country that weekend.

We will do a short 4 mile walk from Farnham centre at 2:30pm to the top of Farnham Park and back. There are no stiles, but some uphill and downhill - about 100m of elevation. It should take 2¼ to 2½ hours. This is NOT meant to be a guided tour or anything like that, just a walk in which European teeshirts, berets, EU flags or anything else with a European theme is welcome. Flags of UK and EU nations are welcome too. Note: we will be taking pictures at certain points. Dogs on a lead are welcome.

Full details will be sent a week beforehand to all who Register: you can register by sending an email to [email protected] with the number of participants.

I hear the rain a‑coming again this morning, rolling in the same way it did yesterday and the day before. I haven’t seen a proper sunrise in so long it feels like something out of a Johnny Cash song — and yes, I borrowed a few words from Folsom Prison Blues, but the mood fits. Gray skies, steady rain, and that feeling of being stuck in the same weather loop.

We had plans to drive down to the Sabine Wildlife Refuge today, but the rain has other ideas. So that trip will have to wait for a clearer morning. In the meantime, I’ll just say “see ya later, alligator,” which is fitting enough since there are plenty of those down there. No crocodiles, though — Louisiana keeps things interesting, but not that interesting.

Speaking of crocs, I still don’t understand how those shoes became a fashion statement. I guess they’re no worse than flip‑flops, and people swear they’re comfortable. They do look convenient — slip in, shuffle out — but they seem like the kind of footwear you choose on a day when running is not on the agenda. Definitely not something you’d want to wear while wandering around a bayou.

And that brings me to the beach. One of the great things about going is the sand, and one of the worst things about going is… also the sand. Warm sand is wonderful to sink into, but it also finds its way into every pocket, shoe, and crevice you didn’t know you had. Flip‑flops are practically the uniform down there; I wore them myself back in the day. But once sand works its way between your toes and under that little strap, it becomes a slow, gritty torture device. Frequent rinsing becomes part of the journey if you’re walking any distance.

So here I am, listening to the rain, thinking about alligators, crocs, flip‑flops, and sand.

50 lives ago, I was jealous of her, but now it seems like I dodged a bullet…

When I was 14 and had just started going in and out of the recording studio, an artist named Sarah Jaffe in the DFW area where I was born and raised was starting to get big on the local scene.

Being the teenager bursting with insane, almost suicidal ambition that I was, I wished so badly that that could be me somehow. I had just released my debut extended play, Sweet Pea, that year, and even though everyone who heard it loved it, it really never sold outside of my friends and family that I know of.

I felt like I had failed. I craved all of the attention that my family didn’t give me, and witnessing Sarah Jaffe’s rise to prominence filled me with a secret envy. We were from the same place, we both wrote music, we both had professionally recorded work, we both played live when we could. What was I missing? Why wasn’t I getting noticed outside of my social circle?

Don’t get me wrong, I loved her music – I still do. This is intended to be more of a reflection of my emotional state at that time than any kind of a dig at her. That’s part of why I think it got to me so bad. I legitimately enjoyed what she created. I just wanted what she had, as well. I played her song “Clementine” on repeat regularly throughout my teens, as I deeply related to it. I wished I could be “more delicate”, as she put it, as I was so intense and driven that it frightened many of my teenage suitors away, with the exception of my future first husband, who was taken with my intensity and drive when we first met at 14 and 15 respectively, although he would not admit it until many years later.

When she released an alternate version of “Clementine” on her album The Way Sound Leaves a Room a few years later that was stripped back to nothing but piano, her voice, and haunting backing vocals, I fell in love with it even more deeply. For the first time, it felt like I truly understood and felt the song’s essence, as I often do when artists release extremely scaled back versions of their music. By that time I had also fallen in love with her song “Mannequin Woman” and started teaching myself music production when my longtime producer ditched me, got a publishing deal, and made off for Los Angeles and stopped returning my calls, taking the rights to Sweet Pea in the process.

I also worked through my envy over the years as I realized that I didn’t really want to be famous, as attention scared me just as badly as I craved it. Getting recognized on the street when I was gigging around Mormon college scared me about as straight as I’ll ever be, although I kept songwriting. I don’t know if I’ll ever stop, even though I go through a lot of dry spells nowadays.

And then in 2024, as news of the Diddy scandal broke, I worked through the rest of my envy as I realized that I probably dodged a bullet by not becoming famous as a teenager. I had had a shitty enough time growing up with a highly controlling mother. I don’t think that, had my singing or songwriting career progressed any further than it did at the time, I would have fared any better at the hands of industry executives, and I learned an early lesson to trust nobody with the rights to my music when my producer left without any real trace. He’d likely been an anomaly, as well, by treating me as an equal collaborator when we recorded Sweet Pea, and not trying to change things too much unless I requested he do so.

So, in summary… I still love Sarah Jaffe’s music. I don’t have any envy towards her anymore. I was an overly ambitious, precocious kid who also knew nothing about what I would have been getting myself into had things progressed. And honestly, now that I’m 29, I relate to these lyrics from “Clementine” even more.

Markdown, how I missed thee. For MFM is not "Misskey Flavored Markdown", but "Markup language for Misskey"; I guess MLM was taken. Also, posting boxes the size of the rambles that are my wont to make. I'd been putting off trying out wafrn for a bit because I saw it announced juuuuust afters I had already gotten going on Sharkey.

And tags as tags, properly tags, separate from the post itself, huzzah. And tags with spaces in! Okay I can do both of those on pillowfort and tumblr, but not on any of the I Can't Believe It's Not Twitters.

Also I see I can do some css crimes, but my favorite text gradient trick does not appear to have all the bits required to pull it off on the allow list if I'm reading the code right. Oh well I'll can fake it the way I do in other apps. But I promise to only be gay and do css crimes if it's funny and if this works the way I hope it will. Otherwise yes I recognize it sucks for screenreaders and such. Presumably gets flattened for federation, another reason I want a post like this that's just playing around to see how that do.

Daaaaanng it.

I've done it again. In an attempt to loosen up on the "but I don't have that notebook with me" perfectionism, I've scattered my song writing / song revising systems too far and wide.
I've allowed myself to spread out over a couple apps, lots of texting to myself, only a couple(!) notebooks, and at worst, some index cards (which are paperclipped into bundles and kept all together in a Ziplock. i do draw the line at random scraps of paper.)
Now, I had a good line the other day. And it paired well with another line I'd had floating around.
And I know I wrote it down. Like, solid 98% taking "being interrupted so brain ticked task as complete based on intention and initiation" into consideration. But I really do tend to remember that I've actually written things down — because it happens so rarely!!

And I can't find it. I've looked everywhere. If past logical me agrees with present logical me, we would have added it to the old line somewhere instead of creating a new random orphaned idea. But that older line already exists in a dozen locations due to revisions and digital vs paper… OR what if practicality and this feck perfuctionism! thing won out, and I just got it out my brain before I forgot it. Full Columbo with a Picasso sketch on the napkin routine… in terms of act first, think later.

Oh well. I was managing to beat some lyrics out myself but I wanted to track down that damn line and now… Well, tonight the white noise sounds like ME just continuously singing one long note. Oh wait, there's some overtones in there. I can't tell you the pitch of your vacuum cleaner, but I can detect an entire choir from the frequencies of a box fan.

I'll say it again: UPNOTE NEEDS A WEB VERSION!!!

An Ode to Workarounds and Permacomputing

Okay this is a pretty obvious post given what I blog about, but I'm feeling really good right now so I want to share that positivity with as much people as I can.

Given the state of the current political climate, it's nice that "slices of heaven" still exist in the world, and we should do our best to support them. I'm talking libraries, small websites, libre software projects (including the small ones made as toys), etc.

But this post is about permacomputing(?), or at least my understanding of the concept, because I think it's fucking awesome, and there's a lot of interlap with the things I discuss here.

I love that many solutions work just as long as you shift your mindset.

I love that I can use a 22 year old laptop for some modern activities. Even though it doesn't support most major modern Linux distributions (and the ones supported have some problems), I can stick with an older version that works best, or use an operating system like OpenBSD and NetBSD that still has built-in support, and I'll still be happy.

It sucks that my 22 year old laptop can't run modern programs, but I can still pull out older versions of LibreOffice, Blender, Anki, etc, or even find modern programs that still compile under C, or even Rust, which has a target for the computer's lack of SSE2, and I'll still be happy.

It sucks my 22 year old laptop can't play Minecraft all that well (if at all), but there's projects like ClassiCube that port Minecraft Classic to fucking, like, everything, even my laptop, and I'll still be happy.

It sucks that I can't play modern games on a tiny computer like a Pi 4, but it's still awesome that I can emulate thousands of games thanks to the hard work done by the people who document and emulate the original console and dump the original ROMs (huge thanks to Near), and I'll still be happy.

It sucks that I can't run older versions of Linux applications easily, but it's awesome that I can just download a Windows binary of the older version and run it under WINE, which matches my silly Windows 95 and Windows 98 XFCE skins or even emulate MS-DOS programs via DOSBOX's many new forks (DOSBOX-Staging, DOSBOX-X), PCem/86Box, etc.

It also sucks that Vim is embracing AI, and no matter where you stand, AI has a ton of issues. But nothing's stopping me from compiling an older version like Vim 8.x (even if the website made it harder to find compared to two years ago). Others, such as Drew DeVault, took matters into their own hands, forking the older version to create "Vim Classic".

It sucks that the odd Wikipedia article has AI-written trash, but it's awesome that I have my own pre-ChatGPT copy of Wikipedia that I can host on my own computer via Kiwix and even search like regular Wikipedia, and as a bonus, Wikipedia now bans AI generations outright.

It sucks that the modern web is fucking garbage, but it's amazing that the small web exists, whether it be on HTTP, Gemini, Gopher, etc.

It sucks that search engines are shit now, but it's amazing that people have proposed solutions to break our ingrained habits. It's cool I can set Wikipedia as my default search engine or even utilize search engines with a whitelist of "trusted" websites (like Mojeek's "Focus") or use different search engines altogether.

It sucks that systemd is complying with the upcoming age verification laws, but it's fucking awesome that there still exist many systems out there that don't use systemd at all, including the *BSDs, 9front, etc. (Except Artix Linux. Fuck Artix).

It sucks that I can't run some modern applications on my computer running OpenBSD, but that doesn't stop me from emulating, say, a Linux environment via vmm or QEMU, and using SSH forwarding or VNC for graphical environments. (I considered emulating a newer Linux on my 22 year old computer even though it'd require a lot of patience to even boot it up, lol.)

It sucks that modern Android phones come with a lot of fucking bloatware, but it's fucking cool that I can disable them thanks to a project like Universal Android Debloater that has a user-curated list of apps and descriptions explaining what they might do, which should help extend the lifespan of the phone by saving power and battery.

It sucks that a ton of modern games require a powerful computer, but it's fucking awesome that I can make my own, for something like the Game Boy, thanks to the dev tools and guides that many have worked on for the console, and any device with a screen should be able to play it. Or that many of the indie games I love still run on my OptiPlex 7010 with an Intel HD 2500, even though on Linux I need to add PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 as an argument for every Proton game. Or those indie games may even run on my Pi thanks to Box86. Or with some tinkering I could turn my phone into an off-brand Steam Deck by installing a Linux desktop on my phone via Termux, then compile Box86 and WINE myself, start an X11/VNC session, and play the games.

For me, it feels like every time there's a hurdle, there's like 50 different solutions around it. That doesn't make the "sucks" things any less valid, and I think we should still fight against them; I just wanted to be grateful for the amazing things we have now.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I want to chill and spend my time learning Common Lisp and FORTH, and maybe develop some game clones with some friends.

Well, this was the third day of my unplanned YouTube boycott. I didn't use YouTube at all, not even YouTube Music.

My son *did* use YouTube on the big TV while we were having dinner, and I even watched - but I didn't log into my own YouTube account, and when I was done with dinner I went back upstairs.

I think my next project is to document all of my YTM playlists and download any songs I'm missing.

It wasn't until I started boycotting YouTube that I started to realize how many posts here on Mastodon include YouTube videos. I didn't click on any of them. I favorited a few where I thought the text was good, but I didn't boost any of them as I thought that would seem hypocritical of me.

Does that sound pompous? Probably. Oh well.

I didn't post as much today as on the last few days; sorry about that! I'll try to think of things tonight that I can write and post tomorrow. Maybe some lost media of one sort or another.

Trying to find a website by the artist that once made the political ideology catgirls comics.

Now I'm looking in my many, many bookmarks, I think this personal website is themed around the author being a game dev, artist and draws scifi type artwork as well too.

The background is purple, dark pink, and light blue with stars on the top and a road on the bottom, a planet as it's favicon.

I seriously wished I wrote down this person's website, and I did see the person's art in their pfp and I think it's the same artist that drew the discontinued Political ideology cat girls comic.

Please let me know of the website's name, I don't know if I have it in my bookmarks anymore.

Not sure if anyone else knows which website I'm speaking of.
