  1. Liebes @surplusmagazin,

At this moment in time I tend to say that #mankind is too busy to solve wicked problems. More #reflection, out of the box #thinking, and shedding ourselves of the #dogma's that the "1984 Brave new world" emergent vicious spiral is continuously imprinting on us, so we talk in #Newspeak to each other. Or just have no time, or lack #attention and #patience to #listen. MUST. CHANGE. WORLD.

That way, those who want to make a difference are "Lost in the World". Like many of us in world-improving fedi crowds, including me, sometimes feel.

However we have to keep positive and muster optimistic mindset, and make #progress. Sitting down and giving up is simply no option, guarantees defeat. Unless we have no other choice, because life interferes, or we burnt our privilege in this unsustainable #grassroots environment, end of "FOSS burn cycle" in case of open #technology development.

#SteveCutts and #Moby express it perfectly in this aptly-named music video.

  5. A quotation from Bertrand Russell

Neither acquiescence in skepticism nor acquiescence in dogma is what education should produce. What it should produce is a belief that knowledge is attainable in a measure, though with difficulty; that much of what passes for knowledge at any given time is likely to be more or less mistaken, but that the mistakes can be rectified by care and industry. In acting upon our beliefs, we should be very cautious where a small error would mean disaster; nevertheless it is upon our beliefs that we must act. This state of mind is rather difficult: it requires a high degree of intellectual culture without emotional atrophy. But though difficult it is not impossible; it is in fact the scientific temper. Knowledge, like other good things, is difficult, but not impossible; the dogmatist forgets the difficulty, the skeptic denies the possibility. Both are mistaken, and their errors, when wide-spread, produce social disaster.

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) English mathematician and philosopher
Education and the Good Life, Part 1, ch. 2 “The Aims of Education” (1926)

  10. #Conjecture: it is impossible to have #morality in the presence of #religion.

Religious people cannot be moral. All their decisions are based on #dogma, so even if they do good, they only do so because they have to - often under threat of eternal damnation.

Furthermore, dogma is unchangeable, so it is impossible for them to change their behavior when it turns out their “morals” (dogma) results in amoral or immoral outcomes.

Geburtstag.

  12. A quotation from John Adams

The Priesthood, have in all ancient Nations, nearly monopolized Learning. Read over again all the Accounts We have of Hindoos Chaldeans, Persians Greeks, Romans, Celts, Teutons, We Shall find that Priests had all the Knowledge, and really governed all Mankind. Examine Mahometanism Trace Christianity from its first Promulgation, Knowledge has been almost exclusively confined to the Clergy.
And even since the Reformation, when or where has existed a Protestant or dissenting Sect, who would tolerate, A FREE INQUIRY? The blackest Billingate, the most ungentlemanly insolenc, the most yahooish brutality, is patiently endured countenanced propagated and applauded: But touch a solemn Truth in collission with a dogma of a Sect, though capable of the clearest proof; and you will Soon find you have disturbed a Nest, and the hornets will swarm about your legs and hands and fly into your face and Eyes.

  17. Solidarity seems like a noble goal, but it's specious at best. When rallying for a cause, we want solidarity – for others to join – but what if we are among the others? #Solidarity comes at the expense of self – fine if you are already committed. Otherwise, not so much.

  20. A quotation from Orwell

From the totalitarian point of view history is something to be created rather than learned. A totalitarian state is in effect a theocracy, and its ruling caste, in order to keep its position, has to be thought of as infallible. But since, in practice, no one is infallible, it is frequently necessary to rearrange past events in order to show that this or that mistake was not made, or that this or that imaginary triumph actually happened. Then again, every major change in policy demands a corresponding change of doctrine and a revelation of prominent historical figures.
This kind of thing happens everywhere, but is clearly likelier to lead to outright falsification in societies where only one opinion is permissible at any given moment. Totalitarianism demands, in fact, the continuous alteration of the past, and in the long run probably demands a disbelief in the very existence of objective truth.

The early Bolsheviks may have been angels or demons, according as one chooses to regard them, but at any rate they were not sensible men. They were not introducing a Wellsian Utopia but a Rule of the Saints, which, like the English Rule of the Saints, was a military despotism enlivened by witchcraft trials.

  23. The #OMN View – The Dogma of Anti-Dogma: Rainbow Gatherings

In the alt paths we need to talk about a circler familiar mess: when movements that are open, non-hierarchical, and anti-authoritarian end up recreating the hierarchical problems they set out to escape. This is the “dogma of anti-dogma”, and you see it everywhere, the example I am using here is in groups like the Rainbow Gatherings. The Rainbow Gatherings have deep roots in 1970s counterculture. Born from the peace and ecology movements, it emerged with a back-to-the-land, […]
