Using HQ 4:4:4 VP9 sources in Pitivi is a waste thanks to it mandating (low-quality 4:2:0) proxy file conversion with VP9 sources... I'll let the lossless screenshot of the rendered result (also 4:4:4 in AVC with animation tuning) speak for itself. Inaccurate colour, visible compression artifacts, colour bleeding... And turning proxy rendering off isn't an option at all, since it'll then stick to 0% permanently.
Thankfully I can just re-encode it in high-quality 4:4:4 AVC to circumvent this problem, with the result demonstrated in the second image.

I am still trying out different #video #editors whenever I have to do some editing. After having had good experiences with #pitivi in the past, I recently tried #davinciresolve in a #distrobox container. Yesterday, I took a look at #lightworks, which, among the commercial options, can be installed refreshingly easily as a #flatpak. #linux

Is there any reason to use #OpenShot or #PiTiVi instead of #Kdenlive these days (besides being written in different toolkit)?

What's unique about it is that's is based upon GStreamer, not the ubiquitous (and unfortunately not great ) MLT framwork.

I've tested Pitivi like a half decade ago (or more?) and it has made really nice progress.

Since my beloved Olive crashes every 5 minutes for me, I've been on the lookout for any viable alternatives to do some bare miniumum video cutting, and Pitivi might be fine.

@textovervideo Volunteer-driven FLOSS projects can go more than a year between releases without that meaning they are dead. As an ex-maintainer, I can say #Pitivi could always benefit from having more/new contributors.

I did not know that #pitivi is being ported to #gtk4 #libadwaita. Does anyone know when it will be released?

I watched some #OpenShot tutorials and it really looked great as a replacement of the bad #pitivi or #kdenlive experiences.

So I installed OpenShot 2.6.1 on my Debian stable to re-do the latest kdenlive-task to fix its broken result, imported a clip, opened the preferences and the tool crashed.

Every time.

I do have bad luck with video editing software. 😔

#Pitivi is really buggy for working with videos. So I had to switch to #Kdenlive for my occasional video tasks.

Today, it was Kdenlive (not even available in #NixOS!) that tested my frustration tolerance way too much: crashed (but restored), effect could be applied 3 times but identical task didn't work the 4th+5th time. Result contains ugly red artifacts that could not be removed.

Is there any proper FOSS video manipulation software I could use for cutting, obfuscation, inserting images, ...?

I'm looking at the commits on the #Pitivi #Gnome #video editor, and it's dead Jim. Too bad. I think the only kind of app missing from Gnome (that must be a local, native app) is a good video editor. #KDE has #Kdenlive, while #ShotCut, #OpenShot (the only other credible options) are also Qt-based. As for DaVinci Resolve, it doesn't even load on this laptop...

Pitivi Video Editor Adds Beat Detection, Object Tracking + More

A new development version of Pitivi video editor is out and it boasts some major new features. The GTK-based video editor is currently in the midst of a GTK4 port as part of this year’s Google Summer of Code but, happening alongside that work, is work on adding a slew of other features that would-be content creators will be keen to try. Following OpenShot’s lead, the Pitivi 2022.06 milestone introduces object tracking. I had a bit of a play with this prior to writing this article. Productive Summer Planned for Pitivi Video Editor

Any list of Linux video editors would be incomplete if it didn’t include Pitivi. I have a real soft spot for this oft-overlooked GTK & GStreamer based non-linear video editor. It’s inherently stable, has a clean, ordered UI, and diligently focuses on ensuring the ‘basics’ of video editing (cutting, arranging, simple effects, simple transitions, etc) are catered for. As it’s GTK-based means Pitivi looks right at home on GNOME-based desktops. But soon it will look even nicer as a GTK4 port of Pitivi is getting underway as part of this year’s Google Summer of Code. Under the guidance of GNOME :sys_more_orange:

A biggest drawback IMHO of #Pitivi video editing solution is that the combination of a codec that has no multithreading support (#OGG #Theora) and the missing bulk rendering feature is pretty annoying and time-consuming. 😒
