Over the summer our 6 year old asked me to read to him from The Official Ubuntu Book (which I co-authored). On the page about the #Mycroft assistant device, I mentioned I had one. He was entranced.
Well, yes, I do. A Mark 1. It's been in my closet since I got it. It might be too old to run #OVOS. Or the hardware is dodgy. Maybe I should consider #HiveMind 🤔 Hey, someone upgraded it to use a RPi4.
What kind of hole am I digging for myself here?

@jannem actually, you are in GREAT danger. At present there are approximately zero #ubuntu desktops that will work now on my old laptop, and I discover #Emacs in a console has no access to saved passwords 😔
On the broken laptop (no kbd) the upgrade was flawless although #Ovos no longer functions, Apache needed fpm fixes and I had to reinstall whisper.

yes I've used #OpenVoiceOS on my Mycroft 2 although I'm now using #NeonAI which
makes use of #Ovos .. I'd say it's fine and interesting, if a bit experimental. -

My test bed Mycroft / OpenVoiceOS installation is coming alongnicely. It's frustrating that MycroftAI's excellent online portal for managing skills and settings disappeared with the demise of the company. But I'm encouraged by the onscreen developments OVOS has inherited from Mycroft II.

I lean towards #NeonAI as it's more full featured than #OVOS, but YMMV. #HomeAssistant has also made huge strides in the voice arena, and continue to work on it. You can turn an ESP32-S3-Box-3 into a marginally capable assistant if your only goal is to control your smart home. If you want to ask it questions about the weather or actors/politicians then no. Not yet.

Pretty much everybody who develops for OVOS used to work for Mycroft or NeonAI at some point. I run NeonAI on my Mark II. It's stand alone and operates entirely locally. NeonAI actually still sells the Mark II if you're interested in getting one. They will set you back a pretty penny on price.

Curious error installing #mycroft #ovos skills, several packages are seeking a json file, but using a bad line of code:
with open(f"{get_xdg_config_save_path()}/skills/{self.skill_id}/settings.json" "w") as f:
is clearly missing a comma, so Python dutifully seeks 'jsonw', but considering there are (so far) two skills that fail because of this, I'm puzzled as to where to look to fix and/or report the problem.

I didn't find a mic test in the #OVOS kit, but I did notice it had listed the 'silero' listener in the generated config, and when this was replaced with the example ALSA microphone spec, it appears I have an audience!
One of those cases where HUNTING the fix took ten times longer than implementing the fix, which pretty much describes my IT career! 🤣
Now it is just a matter of sorting out the skills…

My new puzzle is revisiting an old puzzle - just before they collapsed, I very nearly had #MyCroft in a useful form, but then it all fell apart and was feared lost.
But now there's an active fork: https://openvoiceos.github.io with a flashy GUI and looks very promising, except that #OVOS won't see my HP laptop microphone (UbuntuStudio audio is pipewire, so that could be an issue, but it should emulate ALSA or pulseaudio!)

If I put a Pi4 or Pi5 into it and ran a local copy of #NeonAI or #OVOS and maybe controlled the servos directly from the Pi instead of running it through an extra #Arduino, it would be a lot more capable and compact. Or, I could run it through a Pi0 with a #HomeAssistant assistant setup to offload the hardware requirements. So much potential!! Maybe when I'm done with my class and have more time to tinker around?
