I see, clicking on the hashtags, that I asked similar questions about a year ago — it may be that I'm the local expert.

For what it's worth, I successfully installed #OpenVoiceOS on my #RPi5 in 2025, but I wasn't entirely happy with it, for reasons I forget. So it stayed in the basement, rather than seeing any real use.

Ich hab noch ein kleines Bastelprojekt. Ich hab schon lange den Wunsch, einen #RaspberryPi mit #OpenVoiceOS auszustatten und, wenn es funktioniert, die Echos damit zu ersetzen. Bislang scheiterte es daran, dass ich einfach keine Idee hatte, welches Mikrofon ich nehmen könnte. Dabei steht seit mehren Monaten ein Jabra 510 Conference Speaker auf meinem Schreibtisch 😁

Installed #OpenVoiceOS on my #RPi5. It works, more or less. The next step is to explore the skills. For instance, when I tell it to play the news, I get NPR rather than CBC.

I'll probably complicate things by installing vanilla Debian, once that's available for the #RaspberryPi 5 in about six months.

@tk there are on-screen keyboard options but integrating just cursor keys and touchpad handheld would be ideal. I found Futo keyboard to use via vnc on the pi, but the cursor keys are tiny. I wanted like kdeconnect, but as a keyboard.

For the kitchen, a perfect world would use touchscreen but nobody left me one 😁

It would need #openvoiceos too, but that's a different puzzle.

This time around there is a newer Tasmota add on that works with my living room lights. Still having trouble making it do what I need it to do. But the main issue now is that although there is a voice assistant in Home Assistant, it's not hands free/always listening. You have to press a button to make it listen which makes it pointless since a light switch on a wall takes less effort for my users here. Enter #openvoiceos. Futuristic LOL time. So, I set up a old laptop with Windows 10 a few years ago and installed the Alexa app to control my lights in my living room (and other parts of the house). The hard drive in that laptop died back in October. So I started looking into alternatives. False starts with Android emulators, and Android x86... Then I decided to give Home Assistant a try again. I tried it a few years ago and it didn't work with my WiFi smart lights so I was unimpressed.

yes I've used #OpenVoiceOS on my Mycroft 2 although I'm now using #NeonAI which
makes use of #Ovos .. I'd say it's fine and interesting, if a bit experimental.

Anyone know if @ovos is still happening? Their fedi account is a year dormant, both the ovos-user-manual.openvoiceos.org and the #OpenVoiceOS community troubleshooting pages are mostly stubs or 404s, and I'm keen to know why only my weather Skill reliably responds, the rest say "I don't know", and that answer appears to suspend mic input.

My test bed Mycroft / OpenVoiceOS installation is coming alongnicely. It's frustrating that MycroftAI's excellent online portal for managing skills and settings disappeared with the demise of the company. But I'm encouraged by the onscreen developments OVOS has inherited from Mycroft II.

It's not the first missing thing I have found, but not having venv, which is the bane of Python anyway, seemed kind of, well, extreme. No pip, no wheels, that's crazy.

I installed #OpenAI #Whisper on a #Ubuntu x86; the hope is to provide both #Nextcloud and #OpenVoiceOS from the same in-house service.
