Letters from an American, October 18, 2025

By Heather Cox Richardson, Oct 18, 2025

Today, millions of Americans and their allies turned out across the United States and around the globe to demonstrate their commitment to American democracy and their opposition to a president and an administration apparently bent on replacing that democracy with a dictatorship.

Administration loyalists tried to claim the No Kings protests would be “hate America” rallies of “the pro-Hamas wing and Antifa people.” Texas governor Greg Abbott deployed the Texas National Guard ahead of the No Kings Day protests, warning that “[v]iolence and destruction will never be tolerated in Texas.”

In fact, protesters turned out waving American flags and wearing frog and unicorn and banana costumes and carrying homemade signs that demanded the release of the Epstein files and defended Lady Liberty. They laughed and danced and took selfies and sang. City police departments, including those of New York City, San Diego, and Washington, D.C., said they had made no protest-related arrests.

In Oakland, California, Mother Jones senior editor Michael Mechanic interviewed a man named Justin, asking him if, as a Black man, he had particular concerns about the actions of the Trump administration.

Justin answered: “You know…a lot of times I have a hopeless feeling, but…being out here today just reminds me about the beauty of America and American protests. And, you know, the fact that they tried to…stomp on this, step on this, you know, say it’s non-American, because that’s what I’ve been reading a lot about. No, this is the point of America right here: to be able to have this opportunity to protest…. [This] does not look like Antifa, Hamas, none of this stuff that they’re talking about…. [Y]ou know, this is the beauty of America.”

The No Kings demonstrations ran the gamut from hundreds of thousands of protesters in large, blue cities, to smaller crowds in small towns in Republican-dominated states. Together, they demonstrate that the administration’s claims to popularity are a lie. Such a high turnout means businesses and institutions that thought they must cater to the administration to appeal to a majority of Americans will be forced to recalculate.

And the protests showed that Americans care fervently about democracy.

  4. #NoKings’ protests could draw historic turnout in pushback against #Trump, organizers say

"The anger level is way higher" than it was for June protests, which will drive up turnout, organizer says. Some Republicans accuse protesters of hating America.

"Though Oct. 18's 'No Kings' protests share a name with its predecessor, organizers are expecting an unmatched flood of people for what they believe will be the largest single day of protest in modern American history.

" 'The anger level is way higher' than it was in June for the last protests of the same name, said Public Citizen copresident Lisa Gilbert, one of the organizers. 'It's not just policies we don't like … but it's also actual chipping away at democracy, at foundational rights and prerogatives that we all expect. … People are saying 'I've never been moved to action before, but now I feel like I have to.'

"Things have changed in the past four months, organizers and activists told USA TODAY. The Trump administration has ramped up #ImmigrationEnforcement, sent #troops into several Democratic-controlled cities, made massive changes to American health care and eroded #FirstAmendment rights, they say.

" 'If you're not scared, you're not paying attention. These folks are serious. They are actively trying to take away your constitutional right to peaceful protest, and that is how authoritarian regimes work,' said Indivisible cofounder Ezra Levin, another of the organizers. 'They fear more than anything one thing, which is the mass, peaceful, organized population pushing back against their unpopular designs on the system.' "

  8. #Midcoast #Maine communities participate in #NoKings Day of Peaceful Action

Several events are scheduled around Maine, including in #BathME, #BrunswickME, #FreeportME, #RocklandME and #WiscassetME.

    October 14, 2025

"No Kings, a peaceful protest movement against the Trump administration, has recently announced there are now over 2,500 community events scheduled for its Day of Peaceful Action on Saturday, Oct. 18. These events are organized by average Americans across personal, political and geographic demographics in all 50 states.

"There are five event locations in the Midcoast: the corner of Main and School streets in Freeport, 8-11 a.m.; Wiscasset Bridge on Route 1, 10-11 a.m.; 191 Maine St., Brunswick, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Rockland’s Chapman Park, 294 Main St., noon to 1 p.m.; and Sagadahoc Bridge in Bath, 1-2 p.m. Go to nokings.org/#map to see all No Kings Day of Peaceful Action events.

"Building on the momentum of the June 14 day of action, which drew more than 5 million people across all 50 states, the #October18 mobilization is the next chapter in the No Kings movement. According to a prepared release, the aim of the Day of Peaceful Action is to send a unified message: We are a nation of equals, and our country will not be ruled by fear or force.

    "Groups organizing the No Kings peaceful protests across the country include #ACLU, #AmericanFederationOfTeachers, #CommonDefense, #50501Movement, #HumanRightsCampaign, #Indivisible, #LeagueOfConservationVoters, #MoveOn, #NationalNursesUnited, #PublicCitizen, #SEIU and #UnitedWeDream, among others.

"All No Kings events adhere to a shared commitment to nonviolent protest and community safety, the prepared release said. Organizers are trained in de-escalation and are working closely with local partners to ensure peaceful and powerful actions nationwide."

  12. You know the interest in #October18 its pretty high when the Speaker of the House is this panicked about it . Kudos to @indivisibleteam for being the only ones doing jack shit about any of this rolling coup of incompetent facists in a clown car.

I hope you all plan to show up for a change. Stop letting others try to save this democracy. It’s one fucking day out of your life. Not even a whole day. So shit-can your cynicism and show the fuck up. And drag your friends and families with you. …

  14. Change The No Kings Day Protests Into Something Larger

    Forgive me. I’m dreaming again.

October 18 is shaping up as another crazy day in America. The organizations behind “No Kings” protests have targeted that day for another nationwide series of protests against the policies and ineptitude of the Trump regime. For brand recognition and a lack of creativity this one is called “No Kings Day 2.”

That said, the Trump regime and its cronies are trying to brand these efforts as a “Day of Hate.” So I imagine we’ll see all kinds of mischief.

That’s all well and good and I’m glad to see this kind of organizing from the “No Kings” movement. But as I’ve said before, these efforts need to extend far beyond a day of protests. Until they extend into the week and keep going I don’t believe they’ll change the dynamic.

Of course I could be wrong, depending on what happens with the government shut down that’s now in effect and if Congress ever chooses to come back in session again.

I still think folks should think bigger. Why not encourage people to just shut down and stay in for the weekend or longer.  Turn off the TVs and the computers. Do no shopping. Do no traveling. Make it a “No Kings Blackout.”

Just like with protests in the street you’ll never mobilize everyone, but if enough people turned off and tuned out for a period of time there might be a chance for a larger impact than expecting large turnouts. Encourage folks to stay home and read a book or rake some leaves.

Of course, that takes away one of the motivations behind any protest, which is to seek and draw attention. So, as I said, it’s just a dream on my part.

You can also find more of my writings on a variety of topics on Medium at this link, including in the publications Ellemeno and Rome. I can also be found on social media under my name as above.

  23. #NoKings’ Unveils a Big New #Trump Protest, and the Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher

A movement leader tells Rolling Stone about the #NoKings2 demonstrations on #October18, and how they can curb Trump’s #overreach

by Tim Dickinson, September 8, 2025

"America’s pro-democracy movement is gearing up for what may be its biggest mass-demonstration yet against the increasingly #militaristic Trump administration — which has sent armed troops to occupy the nation’s capital and is threatening to do the same in large cities from Chicago to New Orleans.
Popular resistance in Trump’s second term has snowballed, in an organic fashion, from a large President’s Day protest in February, through mass demonstrations in April, to the first 'No Kings' protest on Trump’s birthday in June — which drew millions to counter the president’s tin-pot military birthday parade.

"After a series of smaller summer protests, the movement will be back in the streets and squares and center cities of America, en masse, in October for No Kings 2 — a sequel organizers are expecting to outshine the original, amid revulsion to Trump’s brutal campaign of mass deportation led by masked agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE), and an increasingly lawless president who claims 'a lot' of Americans would 'like a dictator.'

"No Kings 2 is being organized by a big tent of grassroots and advocacy organizations. One of the most prominent players is #Indivisible, the activist group that sprang to life in the early days of the first Trump administration, and which now counts 2,500 distributed, local chapters nationwide.

"Rolling Stone spoke to Indivisible co-founder #EzraLevin last week, in advance of No Kings 2 unveiling on Monday. The protest is planned for October 18 — in the aftermath of an unpredictable showdown over government funding that could lead to a #PartialGovernmentShutdown by the end of the month.

"Levin says the stakes of the protests have never been more urgent, and that organizers are expecting record numbers of #protesters to raise their voices for democracy and against the threats of #dictatorship."
