    This TechCrunch article is hilarious:

'The U.S. Justice Department is prosecuting an American for allegedly providing U.S. border authorities with a passcode that wiped the contents of his phone.'

It is also interesting and a good WARNING: 'the border agents claimed they did not need a warrant to search Tunick’s phone because he had not yet crossed the U.S. border'.

From a legal perspective, it will be an interesting case.

  5. The KIDS Act passed the House Jun 29th, 267 to 117. The senate's split and authors are already calling this version unacceptable.

Its not for takedowns, it raises liability around some categories (drugs, gambling, financial fraud) without defining "reasonable policy."

    Platforms will overmoderate preemptively.
It also stripped language protecting encryption from earlier drafts.

"El Rio, Zeitgeist and more push back on new SF bar ordinance

A petition undersigned by El Rio, Zeitgeist and more is gaining steam

A new ordinance proposed by San Francisco District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar aims to ban smoking on bar patios, and some local venues aren’t happy about the plan.

    (. . .)

Several bar owners said that it puts an undue burden on their businesses and that the supervisor’s office didn’t do the necessary community outreach. In reaction, 13 Bay Area bars, including the Stud, Mothership and Horsies Market & Saloon, have crafted a petition opposing the ban. It’s estimated that approximately 50 bars would be affected by the change. The petition has racked up 1,488 signatures as of Friday morning.

    (. . .)

Under current regulations, businesses that operate as restaurants are not allowed to have smoking on their patios. As a result, Casements is one example of a bar that doesn’t allow smoking, but the owner has still put her bar’s name on the petition opposing the legislation.

'Taking away that choice is the problem,' owner Gillian Fitzgerald said. 'We’re just drastically affecting the entire culture of bars as a third space every time we tack on these things.'

    (. . .)

'The impact on my business would be direct and immediate,' Zeitgeist owner Lara Burmeister wrote in an email to SFGATE. 'My staff would be required to enforce this change rather than focus on the work that actually serves our customers and drives revenue — creating friction that affects both the employee experience and the customer relationship.'

Burnmeister said that over the past 10 days, the bar surveyed 1,577 customers and found that 89% stated they prefer allowing the ability to smoke on the patio."

Correlation is not causation. To prove the marches – rather than an external conflict – drive antisemitism, the Met would need offence-level data linking specific demonstrations to specific incidents.

"Trump wants to prosecute anti-fascists as terrorists. This Texas trial will test his power.

A July 4 shooting at an ICE detention center could change the way the federal government prosecutes activists.

    (. . .)

This is not just about antifa. Anything that feels at odds with this administration’s policies could be considered domestic terrorism, and will be pursued with the full force of the federal government.

    (. . .)

Since charges were filed, senior members of the Trump administration have held up the Prairieland case as a proof point in their wider campaign against anti-government organizing, arguing that local activism and demonstrations are coordinated attacks by domestic terrorists. Trump’s Department of Justice portrays antifa — a contraction of'anti-facist' long understood as a loose left-wing ideology, not an organization — as a structured 'militant enterprise' comparable to foreign terrorist organizations, one that calls for the overthrow of the U.S. government and poses a national security threat.

But legal experts tell MS NOW that the Prairieland case — in which defendants face decades in prison on state and federal charges — is more complicated than the government’s framing suggests, and that the prosecution appears to be motivated by politics. They warn that the DOJ’s targeting of progressive activists risks criminalizing protest activity, and reflects an expansion of executive power under the Trump administration that casts protesters and perceived political opponents as enemies of the state."

  22. Two Minneapolis residents, monitoring immigration enforcement, say they were detained without charges for hours in distressing conditions, denied calls, and pressured to identify protest organizers and undocumented neighbors. Their accounts suggest DHS is using tactics like warrantless arrests, patrols, and aggressive force similar to other cities’ crackdowns, violating protesters’ First Amendment rights. One was even offered money or legal protection to betray others, exposing intimidation efforts. DHS has yet to comment. These reports raise serious concerns about civil liberties and federal overreach amid aggressive immigration tactics in the Twin Cities. Want more details? 33. #NoKings’ Unveils a Big New #Trump Protest, and the Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher

A movement leader tells Rolling Stone about the #NoKings2 demonstrations on #October18, and how they can curb Trump’s #overreach

by Tim Dickinson, September 8, 2025

"America’s pro-democracy movement is gearing up for what may be its biggest mass-demonstration yet against the increasingly #militaristic Trump administration — which has sent armed troops to occupy the nation’s capital and is threatening to do the same in large cities from Chicago to New Orleans.
Popular resistance in Trump’s second term has snowballed, in an organic fashion, from a large President’s Day protest in February, through mass demonstrations in April, to the first 'No Kings' protest on Trump’s birthday in June — which drew millions to counter the president’s tin-pot military birthday parade.

"After a series of smaller summer protests, the movement will be back in the streets and squares and center cities of America, en masse, in October for No Kings 2 — a sequel organizers are expecting to outshine the original, amid revulsion to Trump’s brutal campaign of mass deportation led by masked agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE), and an increasingly lawless president who claims 'a lot' of Americans would 'like a dictator.'

"No Kings 2 is being organized by a big tent of grassroots and advocacy organizations. One of the most prominent players is #Indivisible, the activist group that sprang to life in the early days of the first Trump administration, and which now counts 2,500 distributed, local chapters nationwide.

"Rolling Stone spoke to Indivisible co-founder #EzraLevin last week, in advance of No Kings 2 unveiling on Monday. The protest is planned for October 18 — in the aftermath of an unpredictable showdown over government funding that could lead to a #PartialGovernmentShutdown by the end of the month.

"Levin says the stakes of the protests have never been more urgent, and that organizers are expecting record numbers of #protesters to raise their voices for democracy and against the threats of #dictatorship."

#Cornyn Says #FBI Will Help Find #Texas Lawmakers Who Left State

The senator said the agency had agreed to help locate Democratic state legislators who departed to try to block a vote on congressional maps. Democrats said #FederalLawEnforcement was being misused.

By J. David Goodman and Julie Bosman
    Aug. 7, 2025

"Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, said on Thursday that the F.B.I. had agreed to his request to help track down dozens of Democratic Texas state lawmakers who left the state to prevent a vote on a redistricting plan.

"The activation of federal agents could create a standoff between the Trump administration and state leaders in Illinois, where many of the absent #Democrats have taken refuge.

"It was not clear on Thursday morning whether federal agents had actually taken action in the case, or what role they might eventually play.

"Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois scoffed at the idea that federal agents could be deployed against the Texas lawmakers present in his state, calling it 'a lot of grandstanding.'

" 'The reality is that all that he has said is that the F.B.I. has been authorized to locate the House Democrats — nothing more,' Mr. Pritzker told reporters at the Illinois State Fair on Thursday. 'I welcome the F.B.I. coming to the state,' he added. 'But they won’t be arresting anyone because there is no federal law that prohibits those Texas House Democrats from being here.'

"Mr. Pritzker has previously said that federal law enforcement agents might be used in an attempt to #intimidate lawmakers, even if the agents did not have cause to make arrests.

"Several of the #TexasDemocrats in Illinois said that as of Thursday morning, no federal agents had been seen or reported at the lawmakers’ hotel in St. Charles, about 25 miles west of Chicago.

"The whereabouts of the Texas lawmakers are widely known, but until now at least, they had considered themselves safe from arrest because they were far from the jurisdiction of Texas law enforcement agencies.

" 'I am proud to announce that Director #KashPatel has approved my request for the F.B.I. to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,' Mr. Cornyn said in a statement.

"In his letter on Tuesday requesting the bureau’s assistance, Mr. Cornyn argued that the Democratic lawmakers might have violated state bribery laws by accepting money from outside groups to support their efforts to prevent a vote in the Texas House on a redrawn political map.

"No criminal warrants have actually been filed against the lawmakers in Texas. The speaker of the Texas House has issued civil warrants, saying that the Democrats violated rules of attendance for that chamber, but those warrants have not been considered enforceable outside the state during previous legislative walkouts."

  38. #DystopianTimes - The collective West decided to #censor the entire internet instead of not doing #genocide

    Ricky Hale and @cemedia
    Jul 30, 2025

Excerpt: "Since the #OnlineSafetyAct came into effect, we've seen an awful lot of political censorship and nothing in the way of saving children. Children's lives have not been improved by this bill, but all of us have seen loss of privacy and loss of information we should be allowed to access in a #FreeSociety.

"There is a petition on the Parliament UK website to repeal the Online Safety Act that I have attempted to sign three times. I still have not received the verification email, meaning my signature has not been counted. I suspect this is deliberate and that many more than the official 427,000 people have attempted to sign.

"The government has already responded to the petition by dismissing everyone's concerns and refusing to debate this in parliament. The whole point of parliamentary petitions is to trigger parliamentary debates, but the government is no longer pretending to listen to what we want.

"The level of #overreach in the Online Safety Act is off the chart. Section 179 bans people from saying something false that could cause 'non-trivial psychological harm', potentially banning #humour and #satire. It could also ban any speech that counters a government narrative and is therefore deemed false.

"If your government decides there is no genocide and you say there is, there is nothing stopping them deeming this misinformation and banning you.

    [...]

"The #MinistryOfTruth now gets to decide which online content is factual or harmful and that will always be a political decision. There is no impartial way of doing this, and aside from anything else, people in a free society are allowed to say what they want. No one needs to be protected from speech."
