  2. #Gibson is a Scottish #surname. It can be a #sept of #ClanCampbell, #ClanBuchanan or #ClanMacMillan. In Ireland, Gibson may be an anglicized form of the #IrishGaelic Ó Gibealláin. It may also be derived from the popular medieval name Gilbert (itself derived from Giselbert or Gillebert), introduced to England and Ireland by the #Normans and often shortened to "Gib". In this case the surname Gibson would mean "son of Gib".

  4. 900-year-old Norwich Castle reopens after a major £27.5 million revamp.

Towering above the city skyline, the keep was built by William the Conqueror and completed by his son, King Henry I, in 1121.

For centuries, it has loomed as a symbol of Norman power.

Now, the fortress has been reimagined as “The People’s Palace” with all five of its floors - from the basement to the battlements - open to visitors for the first time.

  5. The #Normans did not defeat #Viking invaders in #Britain. The Normans were Viking invaders who happened to have invaded France a generation earlier.

They defeated the previous set of pirates, the Anglo-Saxons (English).

#Monarchy is a celebration of the pirates that conquered you. The #British remain a conquered people.

  12. Sorry for the lack of posts lately, I've been obsessing over a peculiar topic:

#Skills (& things) that have been introduced & then lost, just to be reintroduced anew later.

    Like gutters.

The #Romans had them, showed them to the #Brits & they promptly forgot about them. Then the #Normans reintroduced them.

There are so many of those things & I wonder which we will rediscover soon!

  20. 70% of the land in Britain is still owned by 1% of the population, largely descended from William the Conqueror’s army.

Norman descendants are still doing very fine in today's Britain.

  22. Slow progress, but very happy with these first unarmoured Normans I did. They were fun to paint and helped me figure out how to make a bunch of colours not look like a circus!
Also worth noting that I'm too cheap to buy transfers, so the shields are hand painted.
Had my first go with my home made static grass applicator on these too. Really made the grass look deep and lush I think!
