  6. I only caught this well after the sun had fully set but there was really obvious sun pillar after sunset over Dungarvan bay this evening.

It was tricky to catch with a real camera as I only noticed very late but I was happy with these, much better than any previous chances I’ve had.

  13. Most of the rocks around here are various sandstones and shales but the bed of Dungarvan Bay is carboniferous limestone and it’s one of my favourite seaside rocks.

It’s a lovely warm soft grey often dotted with loads of little crinoid fossils. It gets carved into wonderful flowing waves by the sea.

You can find these outcrops around the bay, often combined with the more purple coloured shale layer that formed after it as seen here.

  17. In 1903, #Waterford hosted #Ireland's first St. Patrick’s Day parade. While the tradition began in the #US, this milestone helped turn the feast day into a public cultural festival at home. The day became an official public holiday that same year. Read more about the history of our national day on Vicipéid.

  30. The moon continued to provide a pretty addition to the crisp midwinter mornings but the air quality near the horizon stopped me capturing the picture I really wanted with the moon touching the peak of Knockmealdown mountain as it set.

The iPhone’s AI ‘enhanced’ shot gives an idea of what it looked like earlier but despite trying both UV and polarizing filters I couldn’t bring out the moon nearer the horizon.

Happy enough with the attempt though.

  31. Two quickly snapped poor pictures of the full moon setting over Dungarvan this morning. Hopefully I can get a much better version of this tomorrow.

I’ve lived here on and off for 50 years and this is the first time I realised this particular alignment ever happens. It more or less matches the extreme of the sun setting in midsummer but is a lot rarer because of the moon’s orbit and well, Irish skies and all that.
