Rǫgnvaldr Kali Kolsson (c. 1100–1158), Earl of Orkney, died #OTD, 20 August.
Rǫgnvaldr was a skilled poet (& after his death – slightly surprisingly – canonised as St Ronald of Orkney – f.d. 20 August). Ian Crockatt has translated many of his poems; this one is from CRIMSONING THE EAGLE’S CLAW: The Viking Poems of Rǫgnvaldr Kali Kolsson (Arc Publications, 2014)

Viking armies introduced a bullion economy to 9th-century Britain and Ireland in which transactions were facilitated through the use of balances and weights. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of one type of those weights, made of lead and inset with reused material (an innovation of the 860s & 870s). It examines the range of insets and the messages they conveyed, arguing that they were deliberately selected and processed as a means of cultural communication: to express authority, to reflect the experiences and travels of those armies, and to imbue trading with messages of protection and group identity. It addresses the date range of the weights, whether they reflect specific weight standards, the processes for manufacturing them, and their post-depositional histories. The paper is based on a new catalogue of over 390 such weights, including many from private collections, never previously published, now available as an illustrated searchable online catalogue via ADS. This comprises a critical underexplored dataset for the Viking impact on Britain and Ireland, which can be tightly dated to the late 9th century, presenting new insights into the earliest years of migration and settlement.

Cnut the Danish prince has conquered England. He has an heir, Harald Harefoot, by his first wife. But he divorced her and married Aethelred's widow, Emma. She doesn't care about Alfred and Edward: she and Cnut want their new son Harthacnut to rule.
And Cnut was also king of Norway and Denmark, so there are separate claimants up there raising armies. There are powerful Earls who can tip the balance of power. There are betrayals and reversals. It needs a TV series!

I have been slowly listening my way through the wonderful "History of England Podcast" (https://thehistoryofengland.co.uk) and have reached the death of Cnut in 1035. The succession is so dramatic and full of colourful characters and I knew nothing about this period:
Previous Anglo-Saxon king, Edmund Ironside, has an heir in exile in Hungary. The king before him, Aethelred, has two heirs by Emma in exile in Normandy: Alfred and Edward the Confessor.

Today is the 50th Anniversary of the #Viking 1 landing on #Mars. Shortly after this historic touchdown, the first Extraterrestrial life detection experiment in history found life on the Red Planet.
It found life on both the Viking 1 and 2 landers.
