Question for the community. How's y'all's experience with various Instant Messaging services? I don't use discord except with some of my friends, and I'm trying to get away, as it seems to be going the way of enshittification.
I've used Matrix before, and I'm aware of some of the technical annoyances as a user. Does it tend to have good community (like, among gay nerdy Mastodon folks at least?). What about the other options, like XMPP clients, or like Delta Chat or something?
I believe I've even heard (i might be wrong) that IRC 3 allows for asynchronous texting, so you don't have to be online in order to keep receiving messages that you can read later? Is this a thing? Everytime I look this up, I can't find any good info one way or the other.
Even if there's no community, I'm curious what y'all think has the potential to become a somewhat ubiquitous technology among folks on Fedi? I wanna see more Instant Messaging online in these spaces.

Louisville Public Radio: Political text messages could get more effective and annoying. Blame AI. “AI-powered platforms are training bots to sound like political candidates in text messages, holding personalized conversations with thousands of potential voters simultaneously. The bots are also gathering data, learning what each voter wants from their representatives and using that information […]

PsyPost: Texting a stranger works better to fight loneliness than talking to an AI chatbot. “New research published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology reveals that texting a random human peer each day successfully reduces loneliness over time, while chatting with a highly supportive artificial intelligence program does not. Immer wieder schön, wenn die Mitarbeiter:innen eines Vodafones-Stores [hier: Flagship] sagen, sie schickten jetzt zur Authentifizierung eine SMS. Die kommt nicht an. Und sie erklären dir minutenlang, was du falsch machst.
Problem: Die SAGEN SMS, es ist aber keine. Es ist ein Nachrichtenformat, dass nur mit Google Messenger oder Apples iMessage funktioniert, nicht aber mit SMS-Programmen wie Textra.

Honestly I don't know how everyone does it. Writing on my phone is so tiring. I have about forty five minutes blocked out a day to try to catch up on my text messages and it's sometimes not enough. And it's tiring. Part of it is because I have trouble manipulating my phone. The precision needed to type is hard for me. But like also... It's a lot of time! How do people have this time?? What's your secret??

ZDNet: Microsoft won’t send you SMS texts for login anymore – why it’s pushing passkeys instead.”On a new support page, Microsoft announced that it will start phasing out SMS as an authentication and account recovery method for personal Microsoft accounts. You know, I just realized something: some people sound •flat•. When I read their texts or DMs, they just feel •lifeless• to me.
Others sound unique (in my head when I read what they've written), but there are some people whose voice just doesn't come through to me.
When I was a kid, my father told me to write the way I think; if I did that (he said), I'd never find myself short for words. I took his advice to heart, as I usually did, and it has served me really well for more than half a century.
When friends read my writing, they always comment that they hear it •in my voice•. Now, they know me, so that's not really proving anything. But I've noticed that when I read what YOU write (in a general sense; I mean everyone on here) I mostly hear you as some sort of voice in my head. It's just that some of you—a definite minority—have no •character• somehow. It's like the voice goes away and it's just words on a screen.
I've noticed that's often the case with scammers and trolls. There's a curious sort of lifelessness to them. You know, I suspect that the same is probably true of AI! Although I haven't tested that theory yet.
Sorry, I guess I'm rambling. But has anyone else had that sort of experience online?
Or is it just me?

I'm getting sick of scam texts from unknown numbers, typically far away from me:
“Hi it's <NAME> from <PLACE>, do you remember me?”
"It was great to see you yesterday!”
"I've been trying to reach you for a while”However, the scary thought is that this must be working some of the time. Otherwise they would move to another kind of crime.

I'm having interesting problems texting someone in Canada. A LOT of texts in both directions just...don't get through. And then some do. I've done a little research, but so far there's no explanation. It's definitely happening, though! Has anyone else had this problem?

Friends don’t let friends use messaging platforms that aren’t Signal. Especially not random third-rate platforms (or Telegram).
Remind the people in your circles who aren’t tech savvy. Technology can be hard if you don’t know it well. Heck, it’s hard if you do.
