A historian is challenging the theory that the Anglo-saxons marched from Stamford Bridge to fight in the Battle of Hastings. He has been re-examining Anglo-Saxon Chronicles as well as 11th century sources. He states that the idea of marching from the north to meet William was a Victorian idea. Instead he says that Harold used England's naval assets to make the journey south. It comes as the Bayeux Tapestry is about to go on display in the UK.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce3gdx

  8. The bombing of Dresden (February 13–15, 1945)

German writer and Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass and former editor of The Times Simon Jenkins believe that the bombings were a war crime. Jenkins also considers the bombings to be crimes against humanity. Gregory Stanton, president of Genocide Watch, writes that, along with the Holocaust, the bombing of Dresden and the nuclear strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were also war crimes and acts of genocide.

American journalist and literary critic Christopher Hitchens expressed the opinion that the bombing of many German residential areas, which served as living targets, was carried out solely so that new aircraft crews could practice bombing. In his opinion, the Allies burned German cities in 1944-1945 only because they were able to do so.

In his book, German historian Jörg Friedrich noted that, in his opinion, the bombing of cities was a war crime, since in the final months of the war it was not dictated by military necessity. In 2005, Friedrich noted that “it was a bombing that was completely unnecessary from a military point of view,” “an act of unjustified terror, mass destruction of people, and terrorization of refugees.” German historian Joachim Fest also believes that the bombing of Dresden was not necessary from a military point of view.

The question of whether the bombing of Dresden constitutes a war crime is meaningless without considering the bombing of cities such as Würzburg, Hildesheim, Paderborn, and Pforzheim, which had no military significance, were carried out in an identical manner and were also almost completely destroyed. The bombing of these and many other cities was carried out after the bombing of Dresden.

In Dresden, a memorial inscription about the bombing of the city by the American and British Air Forces in February 1945 was removed.
    #^https://nitter.net/vicktop55/status/1747153598834688199 (17 Janyary 2024)

Then between 100 and 300 thousand city residents died.

The documented number of completely destroyed residential buildings, including apartment buildings, exceeded 78 thousand buildings, and the population of the city before the bombing, including refugees, was at least 900 thousand people (according to other sources, 1.2 million).

The Americans themselves explained the ruthlessness of the bombing by the fact that after the war the city passed into the area of responsibility of Moscow, which would have to spend significant funds on its restoration.

So this is exactly what the people of Dresden should forget.

  12. US campaign behind the turmoil in Kiev
This article is more than 20 years old.
But while the gains of the orange-bedecked "chestnut revolution" are Ukraine's, the campaign is an American creation, a sophisticated and brilliantly conceived exercise in western branding and mass marketing that, in four countries in four years, has been used to try to salvage rigged elections and topple unsavoury regimes.

Funded and organised by the US government, deploying US consultancies, pollsters, diplomats, the two big American parties and US non-government organisations, the campaign was first used in Europe in Belgrade in 2000 to beat Slobodan Milosevic at the ballot box.

    ...

In Ukraine, the equivalent is a ticking clock, also signalling that the Kuchma regime's days are numbered.

Stickers, spray paint and websites are the young activists' weapons. Irony and street comedy mocking the regime have been hugely successful in puncturing public fear and enraging the powerful.

    ...

The Democratic party's National Democratic Institute, the Republican party's International Republican Institute, the US state department and USAid are the main agencies involved in these grassroots campaigns as well as the Freedom House NGO and billionaire George Soros's open society institute.

US pollsters and professional consultants are hired to organise focus groups and use psephological data to plot strategy.

    ...

Officially, the US government spent $41m (£21.7m) organising and funding the year-long operation to get rid of Milosevic from October 1999. In Ukraine, the figure is said to be around $14m.

    ...

If the events in Kiev vindicate the US in its strategies for helping other people win elections and take power from anti-democratic regimes, it is certain to try to repeat the exercise elsewhere in the post-Soviet world.

  13. The Looting of Russia
    Sep 8, 1999
It has been one debacle after another since the IMF introduced its “shock therapy” program in 1992. Like a battered spouse who sees no alternative but to return to her abuser, Russia comes back to the IMF for more credits. But the hundreds of billions that have fled the country in the 1990’s have cancelled out this “aid,” as well as the meager foreign direct investment, many times over. At the same time Russia has accumulated more than $150 billion in foreign debt, with the burden of debt service now reaching a crushing 29% of export earnings.

At some point any rational, non-corrupt political leader in Russia has to question whether the country’s friendly relations with Washington are worth the price of continued impoverishment. That time may be approaching, as Russia elects first a Parliament and then a President over the next 10 months. There will be calls from across the political spectrum to break, or at least loosen, the chains that bind Russia to its Western tormentors.

Before anyone comes up with the idea of making alliances with the Anglo-Saxons, let him first keep in mind that for them, due to their mentality that grows out of Protestantism, we will always be cattle to be exploited and, if necessary, sacrificed on the altar of Anglo-Saxon interests.

    ...

And one final thought. Following the journalism of the last three years, only a few point to banderism as the main cause of Ukraine's current woes. The banderization that took place after the Orange Revolution in 2004, and whose main determinant was the cult of hatred against Russia, made Ukraine an ideal tool in the hands of the Anglo-Saxons for a hot war with Russia.

  17. In 2009, at the height of Operation Cast Lead – the Israeli attack on Gaza that killed more than 1,000 people – #Berg attended a pro-Israel demonstration in central London. Moreover, he even chastised the Israeli newspaper, The Jerusalem Post, for noting that only 5,000 people showed up to the event. In Berg’s opinion, there were three times as many in attendance. The BBC would later change its guidelines to prevent its newsroom employees from attending controversial demonstrations.

During Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli military was found to have indiscriminately targeted and killed civilians, used Palestinians as human shields, and used banned chemical weapons, such as white phosphorous, on civilian areas.

Three years later, in November 2012, Israel launched Operation Pillar of Defense, a high-profile, bloody assault on Gaza that made worldwide headlines. As Israel bombarded the densely-populated civilian area, Berg went on his own internal offensive, telling his BBC colleagues to word their stories in a way that does not blame or “put undue emphasis” on Israel. Instead, leaked emails show, he encouraged journalists to present the attack as an operation “aimed at ending rocket fire from Gaza,” thereby framing #Hamas as the aggressor.

    ...

The implications of former U.S. national security state operatives dictating global media output are profound. This is not least because the State Department and CIA are among the world’s most notoriously dishonest and perfidious institutions, regularly injecting lies and false information into public discourse to further Washington’s ambitions. As Mike #Pompeo, former Director of the CIA and then-Secretary of State, said in 2019:

"When I was a cadet, what’s the cadet motto at West Point? You will not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do. I was the CIA director. We lied, we cheated, we stole. We had entire training courses [on] it!

  19. 22nd April, Today we commemorate the last British #Pagan King, and last king of the #IsleOfWight Arwald.

On this day in 686, Cædwalla, King of Wessex invaded the #Jutish kingdom of Wihtwara, the land of Whit [ ᚹᛁᚻᛏ ] (Spirits / Supernatural Beings).

Arwald had sent his two son to his kinsfolk, the Meonwara to keep them safe.

Due to their superior size, the army of Cædwalla were victorious. However, not without many casualties. #Folklore says that Arwald dealt Cædwalla a near fatal wound that never healed and would ultimately take his life many years later. The story says, that the last curse, uttered using the last of the old magic was from Arwald's lips as he struck Cædwalla.

After the battle, Cædwalla sent his men the commit genocide on the island. A memory that still runs deep on the Island, even to this day.

The two princes were also betrayed after they had been forced to convert to #christianity -- Cædwalla had them killed.

This is not the of the story, the sister of Arwald was the wife of the King of #Kent and was the great great great Grandmother of #AlfredTheGreat. One could argue, the line of Wiht is behind the whole of the British royal family.

  25. Last post in honour of #InternationalWomensDay -- The #Jutes and #AngloSaxons knew #March as Hreðemónaþ or Month of Hreðe.

There is very little known about this Goddess, her precise nature and significance remain shrouded in mystery.

Some have suggested that Hreðe was a goddess of victory and glory, celebrated by warriors who sought her favor in battle. Others, however, see her as a more sinister figure, associated with the violence and destruction that inevitably accompany conflict.

What is clear is that Hreðe was a powerful figure, one who inspired both reverence and possibly fear. Her name is derived from "hréþ" which means "glorious victory" and the verb hréðan means "to exult and rejoice". Because of this, she has been associated with war, in particular victory in war.

Another definition is: Quickly, immediately, at once, soon, forthwith, straightway. This could be a clue to the nature of her as well -- She is the Goddess of March, and this may refer to how swiftly weather changes, one day warm and the next still winter.

Hreðe may represent the fight and eventual triumph over the dark and cold of winter.

Some have suggested her name means "cruel", but that is a mistranslation of the #OldEnglish "reþe"

Ultimately, the true nature and significance of Hreðe may never be fully understood. But what is clear is that she remains a compelling and complex figure.

    bróðor: brother
mægen: strength ; power / magical power

  28. It's #OldEnglish #WordOfTheDay time and today, in honour of #NationalStorytellingWeek we are going with

    spelspreca [ᛋᛈᛖᛚᛋᛈᚱᛖᚳᚪ]:
    prose-speaker; storyteller

spel(l): prose / work or prose

spreca: A speaker / one who speaks in council / Speaks with authority

    Pronunciation: files-thefolklore-cafe.ams3.di

This is the title of a great storyteller, the person who tells the tales or greatness, adventure, of mourning and loss. There is no coincidence that we say stories are "spell-binding"; for the #AngloSaxons and #Jutes, telling stories were the deepest of magics. Every evocative word invoked the most powerful of spells.

The two main celebrations for this time of year were the Winter Solstice (Yule) and Mōdraniht [ ᛗᚩᛞᚱᚪᚾᛁᚻᛏ ] or "Mother's Night" (on the 25th, though might be apocryphal).

I like to think they maybe it was a celebration of the the other Mother Goddesses celebrated through the year:

    Hrêða [ ᚻᚱᛖᚦᚪ ]
    Ēostre [ ᛖᚩᛋᛏᚱᛖ ]
And finally the Winter Goddess herself, Frīg [ ᚠᚱᛁᚷ ]
