#OTD 1604 James VI & I paid £64 10s for gold medals from Nicholas Hilliard. Hilliard was apprenticed as a goldsmith in 1562, achieving mastery, and entrance to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in London in 1569. He married his master’s daughter, Alice Brandon, & set up as goldsmith himself. His miniatures of Elizabeth's courtiers have immortalised them.
