My mom is ready to move to linux, but since I'm a newbie myself, I need to ask you for help with this:
Apart from mails and surfing, she also uses her pc to back up her phone pictures. She copies them to her pc ad there's an external hard drive connected to it. We set up automatic mirroring of the files from the pc to the external ssd. So she basically doesn't have to take care for it except dropping her files to her computer.I'd appreciate any help with this :)

Why "bye-bye WiFi"?
Perhaps you could help me out with a hint?
So, I have LMDE 7 'Gigi' up and running on my PC - alongside my Windows installation.
Now I have a lot to learn - some more urgent than other. Here us my primary issue to address.
I loose my WiFi connection. Here is the pattern:I close down my PC every evening.
1. New day. I boot and choose Linux.
2. It starts and I log on.
3. For a short while I am connected to my WiFi and the Internet ... and then the connection is lost. At this point I can no longer connect. Sometimes I can still see the connection (the name), most times it is gone.(a workaround)
5. I reboot and choose Windows 11
6. Windows starts and connects to my WiFi.
7. Then I restart and choose Linux again
8. It starts, and a stable connection to my WiFi is established.I do not yet know how to fix the issue.
Do you have an idea about, what the problem is? Maybe a hint to, where I should start? -
Yep, I use it sometimes, although #newbies deserve a #warning: It can be very #slow, so don't judge the #OS's speed after that. Better try on a #USBstick to make sure.

currently installing #linuxmint alongside Windows 11 on my daily driver laptop (finally)
As a Linux newbie I found verifying the ISO image to be the most confusing part. But I must say @linuxmint does provide excellent installation documentation so I never got completely lost ;)

I just started to add Hyprland to my Linux Notebook. That is a lot of tooling and customizing involved to get it working.
But after around 5 hours I think most stuff I do want is there and working. Now I just do search for an Conky alternative to list my system information to the background.
Last step is ricing, this will be fun without any css knowledge 😂

#bash has a bunch of built-in shortcuts and key commands that help you get around the #linux command line. Some may be a little antiquated , but others are REALLY useful.
Today, on Into the Terminal, we're going to show you some of these shortcuts, come join us! Maybe you'll learn something new! We'll be live in a bout 20 minutes!

Went to try to install endeavor os on my laptop alongside Windows the other night... The only drive i had enough free space on was my secondary drive. And it still only will boot to Windows, even when i try to have it boot from the other drive to load endeavor. Sounds like it's time for me to just back up my windows-side files and just go all-in on endeavor on there. #endeavouros #linuxnewbie

I would appreciate some advice on a #Linux #distro recommendation:
The Device: A 2012 laptop with a 3rd Gen Core i3, 4 GB of RAM, and a spinning HDD (maybe I'll upgrade in the future)
The person it's for: My mom, not very tech savvy, is using Windows 10, will need a replacement for when 10 goes EOL Oct. 2025. Has used Windows Vista, 8, and 10. Everything she does is doable within basic apps like a web browser, simple office suite, or pleasant desktop apps; Linux alternatives will work perfectly.
What the distro has to be: LTS, simple to maintain, have a workable Windows-like interface, not be Ubuntu. Needs to run smoothly on the provided specs.
Any ideas and help are appreciated. Consider boosting for more perspectives.

I'm in a progress of looking at PC parts to buy to build my very own PC. Does Linux support HDR for gaming and video content? This isn't an huge deal for me if it isn't but just more a nice bonus if it does.

Suggestions and advice for a Linux newbie
While I can’t make the jump to Linux as my daily driver, I’m interested in trying it out more seriously.
I have two computers currently: a 2018 MacBook Pro and a 2024 custom built desktop running Windows 11 Home. My Windows 11 desktop is my daily driver. Like I mentioned before, the only things really keeping me on Windows 11 are Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom and Windows-exclusive Steam games like Microsoft Flight Simulator. Everything else I use is compatible with Linux.
My previous OS experiences have been with macOS and Windows so I’m not picky about interfaces. Terminal goes a bit over my head at the moment but as I gain experience I’m sure it’ll become a familiar tool I can lean on when necessary. I do very little coding and don’t do anything fancy with files. I value privacy and would like to keep telemetry to a minimum, ideally none whatsoever. If something goes butt-up I would like something with a good community of users I can poke for assistance.
The distros that seem most in line with my preferences are Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and Fedora. If there are any other popular distros out there lemme know and I’ll take a peek.

I want to try linux, but I don't know where to start
Trying out something new is daunting, especially when it's an operating system that runs all your stuff.
Before jumping directly into installing linux, I'd first note down what you use your current OS for.
WHAT DO YOU USE THE COMPUTER FOR ?
Note down the apps that you use !
- Linux has browsers, and they are the same ones that you have on Windows or Mac, so websites and web apps will work on linux.
- Do you use "production" software, like for painting, 3d rendering, game engines, DAWs, video editors ...
- Do you have some fancy equipment that you plug to the computer ? Do you have software that interacts with that equipment ? Music hardware, machines, hobby stuff ?
- Do you play games ? Will the saves carry over easily (for example via Steam). Do you mod the games ?
Some of what you currently use will work on linux, some of it won't. It's better to figure out that before installing anything. Some things have good alternatives, some don't, it's all up to personal preference if the alternatives work. You can probably try the alternatives already in your current OS !
You're changing the OS, so things will necessarily be different. Be aware that it might cause some friction, but for a better experience, it's better to try to do things "the linux way", rather than try to force a "windows way" into linux.
DO YOU WORK ON THE COMPUTER ? DO YOU DEPEND ON, OR RELY ON THE COMPUTER ?
It's easy to install linux, but if something break, or something is too different, or even just a slower workflow that you're not used to, it can make your linux journey into a very not fun one. If possible, I'd advise for using linux "for fun" first, getting familiar with it first, before moving to use it for anything remotely "important".
Don't expect things to "just work". Things should in general "just work", but there's always exceptions, and it's better to expect some issue along the way.
DO YOU HAVE A SPARE COMPUTER, OR A SPARE DRIVE ON YOUR COMPUTER ?
Linux is very good with slow and old computers, start first on an old laptop that's been tucked away in a drawer, as you remove the risk of messing up your main computer. It's also fun to "revive" a computer that got too slow.
If you have a spare drive, you can install linux on it, and not touch your main drive at all, leaving you with your current OS intact. In general, always triple check that when you're doing modifications to a drive, that you're targeting the correct drive !
ASK QUESTIONS !
It's always okay to ask questions. Some people might get annoying, but you have those in every community. Block them and don't get stuck into unnecessary debates. The best way to ask questions is to say what you're trying to do, say what you tried and what didn't work. Also, there's no need to ask for permission to ask a question, ask your question directly !
Keep in mind that Linux is mainly just a bunch of people doing stuff on their free time, so people might not have the time or the energy to answer your questions right away. Some people might not know a lot but still try to answer, some people might expect you to know a lot and give you a technical answer. You can always say "sorry I already tried that, but it didn't work, it did that instead / it's not what I want", or "sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about, can you go slower, step by step ?"
A lot of information is already available, but it might be difficult to know how to find it. Some questions as you're figuring linux out will probably be how to find the information. Linux in general will try to be verbose, will try to tell you what's going on. It might be a lot and hard to read, but with time you'll find that it's really helpful, especially compared to Windows where there's a lot of guess work involved in figuring out what's wrong. -
Ask me linux questions, especially if you're new !
I see a lot of people are trying out linux or thinking about it. I also know that there's a stereotype of linux people being annoying to ask questions to.
I've been on linux for a while, and I've helped a bunch of friends on their linux journeys too. I've also been told I'm a good pedagogue, so if you have linux questions, feel free to ask !
Linux is not always clear, it's a different intuition to build, windows knowledge won't always work or even help. Everyone started at some point, everyone was new, there's no shame in that ^^
