    While I indeed do appreciate the effort and agree with your suggestions, I feel like mentioning the #Fediverse as a whole instead of merely #Mastodon's implementation would be more true to the mission of our project.

    Additionally, the proposition of a “random server” may not be as simple as you may initially assume. I feel like if they somehow end up in a server with policies they dislike, this may risk the possible inverse effect of people being even more put-off by the Fediverse due to a bad first impression.

    Finally, due to the demographics of Facebook users being on the more older side, I'd like to posit that perhaps a comparison to the #Usenet #newsgroups of old would help make the explanation more pedagogically accessible. Cheers!

    @LaQuadrature : En tant que dinosaure du réseau, je me demande si ce bon vieil #Usenet (que l'on aurait jamais du quitter) sera aussi concerné par cette mesure de "login gouvernemental" ? Après tout, le protocole du #fediverse c'est un peu le même principe que #nntp, et si on veut pousser le bouchon un peu plus loinprofond, qu'en est-il du gazillion de #mailingList où l'inscription est quasiment libre ?

    I begynnelsen fanns Arpanet men det växte och 1981 bestod nätverket av 213 anslutna datorer. Snart skulle nätet av datorer bli internationellt och kallas internet. Det centrala protokollet var Network Control Protocol (NCP) som lanserades 1970. NCP bestod av Arpanet Host-to-Host Protocol (AHHP) och Initial Connection Protocol (ICP). Dessutom fanns File Transfer Protocol (FTP) för filhantering och Telnet för fjärrinloggning för att användas via NCP. FTP lanserades 1973 och Telnet redan 1969.

    Back to the future - Interacting with threadiverse communities through Usenet / NNTP

    A few months ago I threw this question out into the void - “what if you could access the fediverse through your Usenet reader??” and got almost no response. Still, the idea had lodged in my brain and wouldn’t go away so this weekend I caved in and built the thing. Hat tip to the author of the excellent nntpserver package that did all the hard stuff.

    I look forward to seeing someone’s screenshots of fediverse posts on a Commodore 64, some day.

    This will be released as a part of PieFed 1.7, coming soon.

    I found this reply that I made in 1984 to Dennis Ritchie in the net.followup newsgroup. I was at the time lobbying Sun to add 8-bit character set support to the firmware, but they wanted to hold out for a 16-bit system, like the as yet unnamed Unicode. There was eventually an interim solution but my memory of that is a bit foggy.

    blog post: death's inheritance and the future of tomo

    today, tomo appears to be the only fork of the RSLight nntp server that is still alive. so what now?

    i'll be honest: once Thom/Retro Guy died, i was very tempted to trash the project and move on. I have a half dozen other neglected development projects and books and a podcast to devote my research time to.

    and then I thought about Thom and the thousands of hours of his life that he put into his final project before he passed away. his dedication was infectious. and in 2026, we need decentralized forum software more than ever.

    that being said, I sure as hell don't want to be responsible for taking over someone else's open source project. that's almost as bad as adopting their kid. hard pass.
