Been using Linux since the 0.98a kernel. Before that, I was using
#SunOS, #NeXT and (probably) #AOS (university had a lab full of IBM RT PCs) UNIX derivatives. So, learning Linux was translating my existing knowledge and running the deltas through man pages and, especially #Usenet.

  2. I found this reply that I made in 1984 to Dennis Ritchie in the net.followup newsgroup. I was at the time lobbying Sun to add 8-bit character set support to the firmware, but they wanted to hold out for a 16-bit system, like the as yet unnamed Unicode. There was eventually an interim solution but my memory of that is a bit foggy.

  3. CW: Musing about the future…

Soon internet is going to be way more regulated and restricted. The global supply chain may collapse. Energy, water, food, clothing, housing will only get more expensive.

Pseudonymity (like I rely on) will mostly be a thing of the past for individuals.

Hopefully we can keep #usenet alive and community run.

    Consider getting your #AmateurRadio licenses.

Find like minded people in your local community and establish mutual aid groups?

Maybe together set up a community wide mesh network to keep everyone informed and have communication available should something happen to the non-community run ones?

Learn to mend clothes. Learn to make clothes.

Learn gardening. Collect rainwater. Compost. Grow food. Keep chickens. Keep bees. Learn to cook and preserve. Stock up.

    Learn to repair and salvage.
Learn to make tools. Learn to design and write programs. Learn electronics.

Establish in law and in code
    the #RightToRepair
    the #RightToAmend
    the #RightToDIY
    the #RightToSalvage
the right to own the means
the right to inform and teach others.

“The greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only 10% of us do this, there is enough for everyone. Hence the futility of revolutionaries who have no gardens, who depend on the very system they attack, and who produce words and bullets, not food and shelter.”

Anything I develop/make has to be usable on the current base level hardware platform

"A useful frame of mind is thinking about your computer as offline first. You work with your computer and occasionally have network access. This usually means having data locally and occasionally synchronizing it with others."
