@jarango I'm on the Internet since 1994. (Same month the Netscape Navigator web browser hit the day of light, making the WWW a much better place to browse through.) So yes, I'm ancient.
I've been an avid information worker ever since.
And I never ever subscribed to any #mailinglist or #newsletter.
It would turn my #email process a miserable place to be.
Any organization doing some auto-signup is begging me to extend my killfile, making it impossible to reach me in future.
(#gmane was my dear friend though as I've very much loved the #usenet. And I still think people should re-adapt it as it solved many problems people are having these days.)

You’ve really warmed my heart! It took me right back to the 1970s, when I used 300-#baud #modems and #Usenet. A few days ago, I wrote a post on the subject.
I tried your #server, but I only got error messages (perhaps I need to register?). You can see them in the #screenshots I’ve attached.

Thinking back to the days of 20 years ago when my finger macros just automatically typed `trn` and there was always something new in at least one of the newsgroups I subscribe to.
I subscribe to pretty much the same set of newsgroups now, but they're almost all empty.

Amongst the many challenges with the deterioration of traditional web search is the problem of loss of access to usable references. Where we were once able to collect a useful sampling of data and with that, do analysis and synthesis, today we're presented with garbage.
In the past, the challenge was to marshal diverse ideas into a coherent whole. Today, the challenge is to even find one workable source that even vaguely relates to your search.

I did some research on #Altos Germany and #AltosChat a few years ago and found many interesting legal documents, catalogues, ads, #usenet posts, and mentions in #Phrack. I also found two locations where the althh server might once have been housed. In one, a seemingly related company still exists. I believe I've also tracked down the #sysop, who now appears to be working in aviation. One day I'll make some phone calls, finish research, and write a proper article on the history of Altos Chat!

Фишка современных соцсетей в том, что они буквально засасывают тебя каким-то интересными событиями, но к концу дня это ведёт к чувству опустошённости. Возможно, именно поэтому, когда я наткнулся на топик с вопросом: «Какая твоя любимая соцсеть?», то ответил не Twitter, Bluesky и даже не Tumblr. Для меня это был форум новостных дизайнеров из середины 2000-х, который назывался Visual Editors. Честно говоря, работал он хреново. Там была удобная функция чата, которой часто пользовались дизайнеры, ожидавшие поздними вечерами корректуры своих страниц. Но сам форум постоянно и без предупреждения падал. Зато в плане коммьюнити он был выдающимся. Почему современные социальные сети не вызывают таких приятных чувств? Как вы уже поняли, сегодня я буду говорить о судьбе веб-форумов.
