Very satisified so far with my very keyboard centric linux setup after switching from macOS. Latest addition is e-mail in the terminal (neomutt) which is a delight. I should start paying for protonmail so I can add that to neomutt as well.
Next up is reviving my parents' almost 20 years old laptop. It's very slow even with a very light distro. Going to try installing new RAM and SSD. #linux #newtolinux

Switching from Windows to Linux: Everything You Need to Know
If you’ve ever browsed a tech forum or Linux group, you’ve probably seen the same question pop up again and again: “I’m switching from Windows to Linux… which distro should I use?” It’s a fair question — but also the wrong first question. There's a growing interest in switching to Linux recently, with Windows 10 nearing its end of life (EOL)

So much this! If you enjoy installing Linux then please go ahead and distro-hop as much as you like. But if what you have works for you - then don’t feel obliged to change just because. Don’t let anyone else tell you you’re enjoying something “wrong”. #NewToLinux #Linux #LinuxTips

I'm very curious. In the wake of Microsoft Recall, I've seen a fair few people say they are going to or have switched to Linux.
If you have switched to Linux or tried Linux in recent history, let me know: did Recall motivate you to switch or not?
Also, have you enjoyed your experience? Why or why not? #Linux #Microsoft #microsoftrecall #Recall #newtolinux -
Suggestions and advice for a Linux newbie
While I can’t make the jump to Linux as my daily driver, I’m interested in trying it out more seriously.
I have two computers currently: a 2018 MacBook Pro and a 2024 custom built desktop running Windows 11 Home. My Windows 11 desktop is my daily driver. Like I mentioned before, the only things really keeping me on Windows 11 are Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom and Windows-exclusive Steam games like Microsoft Flight Simulator. Everything else I use is compatible with Linux.
My previous OS experiences have been with macOS and Windows so I’m not picky about interfaces. Terminal goes a bit over my head at the moment but as I gain experience I’m sure it’ll become a familiar tool I can lean on when necessary. I do very little coding and don’t do anything fancy with files. I value privacy and would like to keep telemetry to a minimum, ideally none whatsoever. If something goes butt-up I would like something with a good community of users I can poke for assistance.
The distros that seem most in line with my preferences are Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and Fedora. If there are any other popular distros out there lemme know and I’ll take a peek.

There’s been lots of talk here (and elsewhere) of trying to make #linux more welcoming to new users (such as those turning their backs on #windows). I’ve seen lots of examples (some historic and other much less so) of “just read the man pages” or people providing complicated terminal-based solutions to relatively simple problems. But I also know that there are lots of people who’d be very happy to constructively help new Linux users. But what I don’t know is how to join the two up? It feels like we need a hashtag like #NewToLinux (or whatever - I’m sure there’s something better), which we can encourage people who want to help to follow & to get people to tag their questions with to get helpful answers. Did someone think of this already? Did I miss it? :linux:

Upgrade to: Linux Mint 19.2.
Linux Mint indeed is a popular Linux operating system / this video shows how to upgrade from 19.1.
Linux Mint lets you choose the Linux kernel freely, no automatics.
Users like the fact that it is THEM who make the decisions, not some piece of software. A similarity amongst so many Linux distributions.
There's nothing one couldn't accomplish on Linux as on Windows nowadays.
