  1. All this #LinuxJourney and #LinuxGaming stuff, all this setting up a personal Nextcloud on friend's server... finickery with degoogled phones. For none of that I enjoy the process. But the result is sooooooooooo worth it.

    For me, that is.

  2. Ok, maybe I finaly, fiiiiiiiiiiiinaly solved my "disable mouse middleclick paste" issue. With a very magical command `xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 25 3 4 5 6 7 8 9"`. Btw, what does it actually do and why it gives warning about overriding 9 out 10 things?

  3. Btw, this is how I enabled hibernation forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic

Not sure, what to look for, tho. Whole battery gone in a single night is worse than suspend. But if it was fully on, it should have been notably warm to touch.

  4. Please, nooo! My yesterday hibernated laptop, who really seemed off (monitor off, saw no errors, no fan sound etc.) today has 1% battery life and can't be turned on without charging. WTF? #LinuxMint #LinuxJourney

  5. Turns out, Firefox/Waterfox has its own "paste with mouse middle click" setting independent of Mint's system setting I already turned off weeks ago. Really weird that it never came up back in my Windows days, because with trackpoint type mouse midclick paste is incredibly bad idea and I doubt I wouldn't have noticed.

Ok, I realy hope this was the last of those pesky paste settings.

  6. I found a... workaround for my Nvidia related laptop hibernation errors. My laptop has two graphics cards – fancy Nvidia and backup Intel. And Mint came with nice little GUI tool allowing to switch between them. And it seems that when using Intel-only mode, hibernation errors don't happen. So... As I'm not gaming on this laptop anymore... it seems that I can just turn on Intel only mode and just live for a while like that. #LinuxMint #LinuxJourney #nvidia

  7. I guess, it is time for some kind of overview for my #LinuxJourney aftee maybe year on gaming computer and several months on work/life-admin laptop.
    1. No going back. Linux can sometimes drive me up the wall, but lately Windows did that too and with Linux I don't feel that powerless.
    2. My dear fucking moon in the skies, I need SO much stuff installed and configured on the laptop 😱
    3. Heroic is amazing.
    4. Nvidia sucks, probably will never buy a new Nvidia item again. 🧵

  8. Me being very annoyed about #Kate loosing unsaved files from session when closed.
    Me: installs #Notepadqq
Me: oh, this looks cool, why I didn't tried it earlyier?
    Notepadqq: crashes after 15 seconds.
Me: oh, right, thats why. I did try it.

  9. Just great, my supposedly nonstop plugged-in laptop is dead with empty battery, because the plug is getting old and certain OSes don't have hibernation option. It took me les than 2 months to get there. Guess, who needs to abandon everything and go research deep system config stuff.

  10. Kinda didn't find much about it, but my Linux Mint laptop occasionally has very loud fan when... suspended.

    #LinuxJourney

Lack of hibernation is still an utter BS.

  11. I open my laptop after a bit more than a full day and the battery is half empty even despite kinda being plugged in the whole time. I'm probably deeply unlucky that my charger is starting to lose contact exactly as I switched to Linux, but... this also makes me utterly convinced that Mint's lack of hibernation is utter bullshit and I need it back ASAP. I don't know, who has the batterypower for prolonged suspension, but certain not me, not in this economy. #LinuxJourney

  12. Sadly, #LinuxJourney did not save my laptop from being literally hot piece of... stuff¹, so I have very little motivation to spend my time with it in the warmest days of summer. Good thing, I have vacation.

    __
¹ I kinda hoped it might, but no, apparently it was not Windows fault, just bad technical design.

  13. I'm mostly taking time of couple weeks, thus, no major developments in #LinuxJourney . However, Mondays are backup days, so I spent some time trying to figure out, how to set up rsync so that it shows me enough information but no too much. Because, who would have thought, printing out warning that chown was unsuccessful for every single of thousands and thousands of files is not very... useful. I'm not entirely sure, if I figured out "don't copy anew unchanged files" setting correctly though.

  14. Today in #LinuxJourney Fedora on my gaming computer (not a new thing, it is there since last summer I think) installed small system update and broke my videodrivers. Again. And with it every single game on it. I'm pretty sure the only reason I didn't start crying is because due to reasons my body sometimes finds it hard to cry. The breaking change was from 580.195.03 to 580.195.04. Third position in version number. Where they usually put small bugfixes.

  15. It was not that much of a #LinuxJourney, but in first half of this week I fought VPN and fought ridiculously designed internal document exchange system named after a national hero... and I won! My stuff got accepted because I miraculously didn't press the wrong button and I'm having two weeks off starting next monday.

  16. Lately on my #LinuxJourney: I really didn't like that when I turn it off Bluetooth keeps turning on again. But once I found a solution, it was easy – one line in some config file. Setting up a WireGuard VPN from provided config file was a bit weird, and split tunneling breaks everything. Luckily, I need it rarely, so I just removed the split tunneling part. Not ideal, but that VPN stood between me and holidays! Also by default VPN kept autoconnecting, which confused me for a short while. Fixed.

  17. So far, today was my least favorite #LinuxJourney day. I did't figure out `psql -U posrgres database < stuff `. Smth peer connection. Found tutorials, tried, didn't work. Workaround by DBeaver. Then I painfully discovered that Python gives very, very confusing errors, when you run code meant for 3.14 on 3.12. WDYM, class Entry is not found in the file it is defined 🤦. Thats mostly on me. When I stoped trying wrong things, setting up virtual environment wasn't that bad, tho PyCharm did a glitch.

  18. It seams that neither Kate, nor KWrite (nor Sublime Text which I also I've some experience with) has ability to show various nonstandart hidden symbols. Newlines and other stuff Notepad++ hides in View/Show Symbol menu. I don't need it that often, but when I need it, it's a lifesaver, because problems related to that are incredibly pesky. So... I added Notepad++ on Wine and I'm still in search for my perfect text editor.

  19. I was ready to panic, but I successfully installed my country's e-signature with a second try! (There is a hardly visible link to a huge manual in the download page. One page of that monster contains relatively new Ubuntu instructions.)

Also, Kate looks like a promising replacement for Notepad++, thus, so far I have avoided wine-ing and proton-ing stuff on my work/life-admin computer. However, keepass2 is growing unstable, will have to do something in that department eventually.

  20. Yesterday on my #LinuxJourney: couldn't get to work Double Commander's FTP plugin to autenthicate me with my SSH keys. Maybe the format of the public key was wrong, but why it even needs it, if neither Filezilla, nor SSH itself does. When I gave up on that pursuit, setting up Filezilla for 3 connections with different bookmarks was maybe 15 minutes total.

Also changed the icon of the "start" menu from Mint logo to a little heart. Didn't found a rainbow.

  21. My #LinuxJourney is going as expected – ups and downs. On the one hand, I spent half a day and didn't figure out, how to fix that some apps are not scaling with the rest, the ant-sized text hurts. Might be something X11 and Wayland related, but does Cinnamon even uses Wayland?! The more I searched, the more confused I got. Sadly one of these programs are KeePass2, but I absolutely refuse security apps, where LLM-generated code is allowed, no XC for me.

  22. Oh no, perl's Tk has broken on me again 😱

I really hoped that #LinuxJourney will absolve me from mysteriously uninstallable perl dependencies, but nooooo.

Bless past me who made a virtual machine for that one tool that I need and that depends on Tk. Went to check, what is the config there... same Tk, older perl. So, lets try perlbrew.

  23. Will see how it goes next week but so far it seems that by far the biggest problem in my Linux journey will be hibernation. Not only that it seems to be rather complex setup (e.g., I found this for my Mint github.com/linuxmint/linuxmint), but that hibernation is done in swap file/partition, so there is no way to guarantee that it will not fail became swap was too full.

    #Linux #LinuxJourney #Kubuntu #FOSS

    #Linux #LinuxJourney #Kubuntu #FOSS
