  1. ZDNet: Why virtual desktops are so useful – and my top 4 tips for beginners. “To some, Virtual Desktops are a must-use. To others, they are something to try and eventually forget. Finally, there are others who simply don’t bother. If you are part of the last two groups, know that you’re missing out on a feature that can help keep your desktop organized and you working at a higher level of […]

  2. @Mastodon

I follow Mastodon on Github and I've been waiting for this to happen

I've been on Mastodon basically seven days a week since Nov 2 2022 and currently have one Main and two Alt accounts

My Profile page is highly evolved to look --> exactly <-- as I want it to, featuring --> exactly <-- what I want people to see of me on all three instances

    (The Pinned Post carousel notwithstanding)

But now that's all going away, to be replaced by the opinions of 500 people from 300 instances, was it?

    Funny

I never saw any opinions being asked of anyone, anywhere

Guess my range of view on Mastodon is too constricted

I did see questions and dissent on Github being silenced as "violations of the TOS" however

    Interesting how that works

    Oh well

Gotta onboard those weekender / short-timers, right?

  3. University of Bristol: Free distance learning course demystifies the world of AI . “With no coding or mathematics involved, AI Fundamentals has been purposely designed to suit learners from any background who wish to improve their understanding of what AI is, how it works, what it can do and how we should think about it.”

    Follow more people.
My Home feed goes faster than I can read.

Your home feed is kinda like your email mailbox. Messages come in as they are posted and they are sequential. The people with the most emails are the people with the most connections, or those that correspond a lot.
    To speed up your feed,
    Post more. Follow more.

Here are some places to start. Click on tabs and follow

I do want to say something about Mastodon and the Fediverse.

You don't have to be a brand here.
Who follows you doesn't have to do with the virality of your content, or with how cute your image is. You aren't judged by how many people are following you.

People follow you because of your posts, and because of their authentic interactions with you. You are supposed to talk to people here. That is why this is called #socialMedia because we interact socially with each other.
    Welcome. 💗

  6. @FediTips

    Wow wow wow wow.

    Best thing ever. Awesome website.

    Thank you very much.

    Informative.

Very easy to read. Useful links. Well done.

  7. Another tip for the #newbies is that you can follow hashtags, and you will see posts with that hashtag across instances if you choose. I am always looking for more people with #greyhounds and #whippets!

  8. For Forkiverse members new to the Fediverse, the Mastodon iOS app is fine but not great imho. In my opinion, the best iOS app is Mona (which is pricey, but it’s what I use as my main interface) and the best *free* iOS is Ice Cubes. I use Ice Cubes to view this account so I don’t have to switch back and forth between accounts in Mona. I have a third, much older Fediverse account that I view via the Mastodon app or the web interface. #newbies

  9. TechCrunch: A beginner’s guide to Mastodon, the open source Twitter alternative . “Unless if you’re really in the know about nascent platforms, you probably didn’t know what Mastodon was until Elon Musk bought Twitter and renamed it X. In the initial aftermath of the acquisition, as users fretted over what direction Twitter would take, millions of users hopped over to Mastodon, a fellow […]

Moving to flakes is scary because one has to re-factor the configuration.nix and so fears breaking things, but in fact you can keep it as it is and split it and just comment out a small part of that file and plonk parts into other modules to get going. Once that works identically to before, one can start really adding & changing stuff. Install Code in flake dir & it can do it for you -> amazing !!!

  12. @_elena @yunohost Very nice, wel written blogpost about #yunohost for #newbies

Even though I consider myself to be a #techie, I still feel a bit uncertain about selfhosting. Your post made me decide to finally go for it. Thanks!

I'm looking forward to the post about backup/restore. I do hope you are going to do a post about that.

  17. Something I think could be important to keep in mind for #inux #newbies:

When I switched from two decades of #macos to Linux, many things felt strange, weird, maybe even awkward.

I feel exactly the same nowadays whenever I have to touch a Mac. 🙃

Yep, I use it sometimes, although #newbies deserve a #warning: It can be very #slow, so don't judge the #OS's speed after that. Better try on a #USBstick to make sure.

  26. ZDNet: 5 of my favorite Linux distros ready to use out of the box – no setup required. “These distros are easy to install, include the right apps, skip the bloat and ads, and automatically detect your hardware. Easy peasy. You’re welcome.”

  27. @alicetawhai @Viralpoet Just a thought on this. IN preferences/appearance you can "Always expand posts marked with content warnings/wrappers" so you will no longer be impacted by them if you don't like them. Hope that helps #CW #Mastodon #MastodonAdmin #UserGuide #newbies #nzpol
