  1. Can anyone recommend some basic (interactive) bash tutorials suited for people with next to no knowledge?
I'll have to teach a Newbie in about a month :p

Kennt hier jemand gute (interaktive) Tutorials für Bash Grundlagen, die man jemanden geben kann der kaum bis gar keine Erfahrung hat?

  3. A little Linux help please, Gnome specific.
So, for reasons, I'm ditching my Roku, and will be using one of my many computers instead. To that end, I've installed Fedora with Gnome, I'm not a fan of Gnome for the desktop, but that's because I think its like a tablet operating system, not a desktop, but that's great on a TV, no?

So, to what I need help on, I'd like some kind of 'app' menu. It'll prolly mostly be web links, you know like one for YouTube, one for Pluto, etc. I could maybe make web apps for each one, but really just links that'll bring up the default browser would work fine. ideally on the desktop, barring that, the next choice would be the apps drawer, third choice of course would be some kind of dedicated menu, maybe a Rofi or something.

Anyone got any recommendations, ideas, etc?

  7. I need help with my Linux Mint installation, if anyone can lend a hand. I posted more details on the Mint forums here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2802067
Long story short, I installed an update yesterday that has locked me out of my machine, at least in any usable form. All files are seemingly intact, but I can't even input anything properly now and I think my install is a loss. I just want to get my files back so I can reinstall Mint or another OS. I did choose to encrypt my drive on install, which isn't a problem so long as I have a place to input the password… Which I don't anymore.

I am currently running elementaryOS from a USB stick, trying to see if I can somehow access anything from THERE. Any help is greatly appreciated. <3

  9. :boost: 🥺 :boost:

hey fedi do you have a good tool to organize pics ?

the optimal behaviour for my current usage would be to be able to see pics one by one and easily chose (optimally with a shortcut) in what subfolder they need to go (optimally queue that so the move is executed once i'm done), but I'm not sure such a tool exist.

if you know something ergonomic to do that that would save me so much time.

    if you don't please share ! :boost_ok:

    Thank you ! 💜

  13. Problem "resolved" (for some value of "resolved") but leaving this here for context and reference.

No further help needed, but thoughts and comments welcome ...

    ----------------

Last night I was installing pandoc, which went well enough, but then I needed \( \LaTeX\) so I did this:

    $ sudo apt install texlive-full

All went well, until it got to here:

"Pregenerating ConTeXt MarkIV format. This may take some time... "

I let that run overnight, but finally killed it. It advised me to run this:

    $ sudo dpkg --configure -a

So I did that, and once again it hung.

I killed the right sub-process and the remainder completed.

    However ...

This morning I've been informed I have an update for vim. So I confirmed that, and now it's stuck again:

"Pregenerating ConTeXt MarkIV format. This may take some time... "

    Help?

  15. Is it just me, or has Tidal's web player stopped responding to media keys (previous, next, pause)?

Related: Is there a streaming service that has a downloadable app for Linux (and isn't Spotify)?

Alternatively, is there some process that might be intercepting those keys? I'm on Linux Mint Cinnamon.

  17. hey yall, need some linux help here

I'm on Linux Mint 22.3. On around December 7, 2025 my desktop environment seemed to have frozen. Ever since then at least once or twice a month I get either one of three things:

-Desktop environment and mouse freeze up and do not recover, requiring a force restart
-System crashes with a green screen, requiring a force restart
-System just randomly restarts on its own

I suspected from the green screen crashes that it was my graphics drivers, so I added these to my kernel parameters: amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 which seemed to have fix it as I haven't gotten it since, but freezes and reboots still happen. It never happens under circumstances like playing video games or watching YouTube videos. It specifically happens when I'm just browsing the web normally. I'm unsure what is causing it. I checked if there's anything potentially causing overheating and there is not. I also checked journalctl and dmesg but those showed up with nothing. This did not happen under Windows 10 or Linux Mint for the few months until December 7, 2025. I do remember one green screen crash under EndeavourOS in 2024 when I first got this computer, but I haven't seen this problem again until a few months ago.

    CPU is Ryzen 9 6900HX with integrated Radeon 680M graphics. Kernel 6.8.0-117-generic #linux #linuxhelp #linuxmint

  18. How do I troubleshoot a black screen on #KDE #Plasma? I am able to launch apps just fine, but:
    - the desktop is all black (no start menu, global menu etc, and the desktop background isn't getting rendered)
    - the window decorations are HUGE.

Is there any easy way to debug this? I had initially suspected this was due to my using
#Stylix on stock #archlinux, but no, disabling it didn't change a thing (apart from the theme).

I do have custom desktop effects and window decorations installed; so I suspect that
might be the issue. How do I disable them if systemsettings does not launch (for some weird reason)?

It's definitely not a kernel issue (I've tried on the stock Arch kernel and the CachyOS kernel), and it certainly isn't a graphics issue (stock mesa etc, and I don't have a dGPU on this machine).

Will send screenshots in a while. Any and all help appreciated! Thanks in advance. Toots and boosts welcome.

  21. does anyone knows what's the root cause of this issue/bug ? I've had the exact same problems and I suspect it's because of my wi-fi card drivers / 6.4 kernels and onwards

basically: frequent wifi disconnects, complete unrecoverable system crashes during high network activity, and no sysrq responses afterwards. logs say nothing

  23. Got to keep my work laptop and just realised that I'm now free to ditch Windows and install Linux. It's a Thinkpad E14 gen 3 with AMD Ryzen 5, 16 gb ram and a 256 gb ssd. I dabbled with Mint a long time ago but consider myself a somewhat informed newbie, who now has the time to experiment and learn.

So I'm looking for tips and advice about which distro I should check out, what I should take into account and anything that can help me with this project.

  25. Hey anyone running #GarudaLinux - I'm not but two of my friends are, and I have a couple of questions I was hoping could be answered.

    1. One of them can't upgrade their system at the moment as librewolf can't resolve the dependency libvpx.so=11-64

    2. The Other hasn''t been able use Blender for the last 2 months because Python is incompatible (apparently a function name changed to do with string manipulation)

Any advice on how I can help them fix this?

  27. [Edit: Solved!] I [had] a bizarre-ass #Bash #scripting problem. I'm at my wits' end.

I have a script that scans a directory and picks a random file from it. This script works just fine if I invoke it manually, from the command line in a terminal window.

But if I run it from the Linux Mint/Cinnamon menu (start menu, whatever), it hangs when it tries to list the files in the dir. Likewise when run from crontab (which is how I really want to run it most of the time). 🧵 1/4

  32. Seeking help with linux install.

I am trying to keep Debian installed on my pc but my MSI motherboard keeps removing the boot entry from NVRAM so it doesn't show up when I reboot. So i am forced to boot to windows so that the entry is repopulated on reboot. I heard it's because MSI motherboard removes any entries that are not in the default path (/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.efi). I tried manually creating this entry with bootctl (systemd-boot) and EFIbootmgr. But this still doesn't stop the boot entries from being removed. And once the boot to windows then reboot only the grub entry to Debian is left and not the systemd boot entry. I am trying to move it to the systemd-boot.

I want to move of windows eventually but I need the debian install to be consistent first.

What are the proper commands for bootctl and efimgr to set the correct bootloader so that it persists after each shutdown? I have the debian install on a sata SSD and windows is on the nvme drive.

  40. Resize root partition in Debian VM

    Hello Linux friends,

Looking for some help today. Some dummy who won’t be named undersized the partition for his Debian VM at 32Gb. This was not enough space, as the VM is already out of storage. In Proxmox where the VM is hosted, I’ve already allocated extra space for this VM using Proxmox’s built in GUI tools. The problem is, I’m not sure how to properly extend the partition within the VM itself, using the terminal only, without breaking everything (something I obviously don’t want to do, lol).

I’ve done a bit of searching and people seem to be recommending tools like fdisk and resize2fs, both of which are not installed, and I’m afraid that I don’t have any available space to install them. I’m also a bit of a noob and some of the language for drives and partitioning just flies over my head.

    Any tips on:
    - Clearing a bit of space on a Debian VM (that’s mostly using Docker, no other programs/files running constantly)
    - Resizing root partitions without too much headache
    Would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, and have a beautiful and safe day!
