The Whitechapel Full Moon Society by Elizabeth DeLozier
When Caroline Foster’s beloved brother is missing, she travels to London and the boarding house where he’d been staying. The rough exterior conceals a richly furnished gentleman’s club and a sign on the door that reads Whitechapel Full Moon Society. The building sits in the middle of the hunting field of Jack the Ripper. The driver warns her that it might not be a good place for a lady to stay.
She arrives in a city where the streets are muddy and smell of horse manure. The people on the streets don’t look much better. Caroline had been used to living a life of wealth and privilege in the country until her father’s death. That is when she also learned of his gambling debts. Caroline desperately needed her brother.
Each day news of the murders are plastered on the front pages of the newspapers.
Caroline takes a job as a maid because she has no money or other options. She uses a different name because she doesn’t want to reveal herself until she knows more about what is going on with her brother.
The Whitechapel Full Moon Society houses a group of oddly interesting men.
Each month the two women worked tirelessly making the place spotless while they provided a feast for the men’s monthly full moon dinner. At that time the regulars are joined by a few extras who only stay on the night of the full moon.
The story takes place during the time of Jack the Ripper in the neighborhood where he hunted his victims. Caroline is told by the landlady that after they serve that night, she must promise to lock herself away in her room and not come out until morning. She is also told to never go into the room on the second floor that has a lock on it.
As the months go by, Caroline starts connecting that the murders tend to happen on a full moon. She starts questioning whether the men might be involved somehow.
While she is working, she gets to know the residents and starts looking for clues about her brother’s disappearance.
Slowly she puts the clues together until she discovers the answers she is searching for. Her investigation takes her into dangerous parts of London and introduces her to the criminal element.
This was a surprising read for me. I love books set in England and have always been interested in the mysteries surrounding Jack the Ripper. I thought this was a great read. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical mysteries and who may have an interest in Jack the Ripper. It was a fun read and look forward to reading more from this author.

Elizabeth Stride, known as “Long Liz,” was born in Sweden in 1843 and later settled in London’s East End. By 1888 she was living in poverty, earning money through cleaning and occasional prostitution. In the early hours of 30th September, she was found dead in Dutfield’s Yard, Berner Street, with her throat cut. Her murder was the first of the so-called “Double Event,” followed less than an hour later by the killing of Catherine Eddowes in Mitre Square. Her life ended when she was only 44… #jacktheripper #history #truecrime #eastlondon

Walking along the South Bank today, I happened across a second hand bookstall. They had a few interesting books, like a first edition copy of Orwell's Keep the Aspidistra Flying.
Also a slipcase copy of #JacktheRipper: the Casebook by Richard Jones, which is basically a collection of player handouts.
(Not to be confused with Jack the Ripper: the Definitive Casebook by Ripperologist Richard Whittington-Egan, which is a survey of all the main theories).

Did the press create Jack the Ripper or just the legend we still picture today? Modern retellings may have shaped the myth just as much as the sensational headlines.

Conversation with @Taskerland took me to the Wikipedia page for #RobertBloch where I learned that Bloch had written several stories about #JackTheRipper
The first of these, "Yours truly, Jack the Ripper" cast the Ripper as an eternal being who must make human sacrifices to extend his immortality. This idea resurfaced in Bloch's contribution to the #StarTrek #TOS episode "Wolf in the Fold".
I was familiar with Bloch's #CthulhuMythos work but this I did not know.

My interest in the #mythology of #JackTheRipper began when I was an undergraduate in London in the 1990s. The student haunt of Brick Lane was popular for its legendary curry houses. A few steps away, on the corner of Fournier Street and Commercial Street, in the shadow of the strange, looming, obelisk-shaped steeple of Christ Church Spitalfields, stood the Ten Bells Public House.

CW: Mord, Femizid

I have been playing with #fonts for the front cover of Return of the Ripper, and I have found two that I really like.
The title text is set in GrandjeanPW. This one is inspired by the types of Philippe #Grandjean de Fouchy (1666–1714), a #French punchcutter and #type engraver.
The strapline is set in Dear Boss, a #typeface mimicing the handwriting in the "Dear Boss" letter received by #ScotlandYard in September 1888 and allegedly written by #JacktheRipper.
