The Greek Slave & The Virginian Slave
The Greek Slave was sculpted by American Hiram Powers in 1843. It depicts a Christian Greek woman captured by Turks. Controversial because of it's depiction of a naked woman, it became one of the most famous sculptures of it's time. It was featured at the 1851 Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in London, where it stood on a rotating pedestal under a lavish red canopy. As part of the American pavilion it was the centerpiece of a display that included a tipi, Native Americans, portraits of presidents + objects associated with progress + national identity.
The Virginian Slave, drawn by John Tenniel was an illustration published in the British magazine Punch as a direct counter-image. It showed a shackled Black woman, forcing Americans to confront the realities of slavery in the American South. During his visit to the fair American Abolitionist, author + former slave William Wells Brown placed the image of the Black slave alongside the white statue to emphasize the suffering of enslaved women - An American reality.

Copied from #JohnTenniel ’s wonderful #illustration of the #CheshireCat in #AliceInWonderland. After some persuasion the Cheshire Cat allowed me to draw our two elderly #RagDoll cats in his place. Both are about to disappear into parallel dimensions as their daily medicine doses are due.
Cat in tree is Louise while Horatio sits on the ground.
Heartfelt thanks to John Tenniel for being the inspiration for this illustration, done in pencil and watercolour.

Slowly, i am working through the Alice images i scanned from a 1930s copy of the book that i think was my mother’s. Most of the impressions are very clean, but some plates are slightly damaged. This one is not too bad.

Mistodon: this #teletext screen by @atonalosprey adapts #JohnTenniel's 1888 engraving 'The Nemesis of Neglect' for Punch magazine, 'making a clear connection between poverty and crime' in the era of #JackTheRipper. It was included in the MIST1024 artpack released one year ago.

Haigha and Hatta, in Alice Through the Looking Glass, are presumably parodies of Hengist and Horsa, the Romulus and Remus of Anglo-Saxon England. Here they serve tea and bread and butter while the lion and unicorn (symbols of England & Scotland) pause fighting for refreshments. All very British.

The Tenniel Alice images are widespread, but these are higher quality & cleaner than many.

Keir Starmer removed the Whips of four MPs for alleged persistent 'breaches of party discipline'. This cartoon features Starmer and the four MPs in a homage/parody of John Tenniel's original illustrations for the book Alice in Wonderland.
