  1. "Parallels have been made to The Great Michigan Fire of 1871, which swept across the state and impacted 2.5 million acres.

The ice storm impact area is not only larger but modern infrastructure and populations make it almost impossible to compare."

  2. Well, we are down to 22,640 people still without power! That came down a lot in the past 24 hours! Hopefully, everyone else can get restored by tomorrow night so we can all start major clean-up around here.

  3. And we're back up again, but prepared to have repeated outages as they work their way through everything.

  4. Living in a small town comes with a lot of downsides. Absolute truth. I can't get delivery of anything to my house, I have to drive to another town to get to any grocery store or big box store, I have no fast food nearby, prices at the party store are sometimes double what they are at Walmart or Family Fare. It can really suck.

However, this state of emergency has really shown how a community can come together. I have seen people delivering wood for free, food giveaways, showers...

  7. Well, we are now at "crews are making repairs." It still says tomorrow at 6pm, but I feel a little better knowing they are in my immediate neighborhood. A couple of friends have gotten power back long before the estimated restoration time so this gives me hope. Of course, one lives in another county even though they have a Rosco address and the other lives quite a ways from me. But... It's seeming more positive than when I woke up this morning.

  8. Nothing like a natural disaster in your area to pull you out of your manic-depressive state. Spent all of last week losing my mind and now I have had to pull it together or else.

  9. Still no power though I hear that they have restored power on the north side of Higgins Lake so hopefully they will work their way around to us tonight.

Watched a huge branch fall near the driveway. It hit the power pole, but amazingly the lines all stayed up. The pole and lines shook for quite some time.

Heard from some people heading south that there were a lot of linemen heading north on I-75. So help is here and more is coming.

  10. I don't know what time power went out last night, but Consumers Energy says it will be restored by 9am tomorrow. I am hoping that it comes up sooner than that, but with 95.4% of the county out, I doubt it.

Looking outside there are branches all over the road. But our lines directly in front of us are fine. Covered in ice, but still hanging on. Just about everything in the county is closed today.

If you're in this mess with me- stay warm and stay safe!

  11. A bit concerned for this white pine, but they're pretty flexible so just waiting for a bit of warmth for it to bounce back. And🤞for no strong winds.

  12. Not to downplay the seriousness of having a cm of ice all over everything—here on the South Shore, at least, this has been the worst #icestorm in recent years—

    But…

If you weren’t around in 1998, or were too young to remember, this was about half of what we got in 1 day back then. And there were another two days of the same after that. Then we got 20 cm of snow and freezing temps for several weeks.

I remember hammering an inch of ice off my car three days in a row. 😳

    Stay safe out there!
