#PortlandME - #JazzAtTheMovies film series
"#WMPG’s Jazz At The Movies team are pleased to present our first film of the 2026 season, the documentary 'Music Pictures: #NewOrleans'.
"Beautifully shot and recorded, the film is a loving portrait of four Crescent City jazz, soul, and blues legends, and a celebration of 100 years of New Orleans musical history.
"Directed by New Orleans native filmmaker #BenChace, 'Music Pictures: New Orleans' is a vibrant documentary exploring the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. It showcases the city’s diverse musical landscape, from legendary #JazzClubs to lively street performances, highlighting the influences of #Creole, #AfricanAmerican, and #French cultures, and how historical events, like #MardiGras and #HurricaneKatrina, have shaped the city’s music scene. Through interviews with local musicians and historians, Music Pictures: New Orleans reveals music’s central role in the city’s cultural and social fabric.
"The film showcases four New Orleans music legends: Grammy-winning #IrmaThomas 'The Soul Queen of New Orleans' ; #BennyJonesSr., the leader and drummer of the world renowned #TremeBrassBand; guitarist #LittleFreddieKing, the 'Last King of the Blues'; and the pianist and educator, #EllisMarsalisJr., patriarch of the famed jazz family, in what would be his last concert before his death. Music Pictures: New Orleans follows each of the four artists, one by one, as they talk about their lives, rehearse, and record a new album in the studio in early 2020s. By combining vintage footage with live interviews and rare backstage access, this film provides a wonderful snapshot of New Orleans as the home for so much great American music, from #soul to #BrassBand to jazz and #TheBlues. What better way to get ready for the Mardi Gras season!"

Big Picture Science for Nov. 03, 2025: Katrina and the River
REPEAT
“The Mississippi River will always have its own way; no engineering skill can persuade it to do otherwise,” said Mark Twain. In this, our final episode marking the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we consider how efforts to control the Mighty Mississippi – a river engineered from its Minnesota headwaters to its Gulf Coast outlet – have responded to the devastating storm, and how New Orleans’ relationship to the river has changed. Can the city keep up with the pressure that climate change is putting on this engineered system, or is retreat the only viable response?Plus, a wetland recovery project that aims to bolster protection from hurricanes and flooding in the Lower Ninth Ward.
Guests:
* Boyce Upholt – Journalist and author of “The Great River: The Making and Unmaking of the Mississippi River”
* Nathaniel Rich – Author of “Second Nature: Scenes From a World Remade” and the New York Times Op-Ed, “New Orleans’ Striking Advantage in the Age of Climate Change”
* Harriet Swift – New Orleans resident
* Andrew Horowitz – Historian, University of Connecticut, author of "Katrina: A History, 1915-2015"
* Rashida Ferdinand – Founder and Executive Director of Sankofa Community Development Corporation, overseeing the Sankofa Wetland Park and Nature Trail in New Orleans
* Jason Day – Biologist, wetland Scientist, Comite Resources in LouisianaOriginally aired August 18, 2025

I'm just sitting here - safe in Florida - and feeling guilty ...oh so guilty ... that I'm relieved we are not in the path of #HurricaneMelissa !
PLEASE help #Jamaica any way you can! They will not be able to handle this without much monetary help!
Please remember that this one is stronger than #HurricaneKatrina when it hit #NewOrleans and much stronger than #HurricaneMilton when it hit us here last year.
Pray for those who can't get out of her way!

20 years ago today:
ROVE-LED CAMPAIGN TO BLAME LOCAL OFFICIALS BEGINS: “Under the command of President Bush’s two senior political advisers, the White House rolled out a plan…to contain the political damage from the administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina.” President Bush’s comments from the Rose Garden Friday morning formed “the start of this campaign".

BUSH “SATISFIED WITH THE RESPONSE”
STILL NO COMMAND AND CONTROL ESTABLISHED: Terry Ebbert, New Orleans Homeland Security Director: “This is a national emergency. This is a national disgrace. FEMA has been here three days, yet there is no command and control. We can send massive amounts of aid to tsunami victims, but we can’t bail out the city of New Orleans.”

20 years ago today: New Orleans Mayor Nagan tells Federal Goverment to "get off your asses".
Short radio interview over the telephone from the disaster area was probably the best thing Nagan ever did.
"I don't want to see anybody do anymore goddamn press conferences. Don't do another press conference until the resources are in this city."
CNN transcript I linked to on my blog at the time is still up:

From my old blog 20 years ago today, watching the Hurricane Katrina Federal Flood disaster on motel tv in evacuation.
Gee ogre fee
I keep talking back to the tv as they give to me obviously wrong information about where and what various footage from New Orleans is. (Also, the repeated references to "Saint Bernard County"; Louisiana has Parishes, no counties.)1/5

20 years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, a slate of new documentaries take a look at how things are today. @IndieWire reviews the films, including Spike Lee's "God Takes Care of Fools and Babies,” which is part of a three-part Netflix series, Traci A. Curry and Ryan Coogler's "Race Against Time," and Peacock's "Hope in High Water." "'Race Against Time' really starts cooking when it tackles the racial bias evident in the disaster response and the way it was covered," writes Ben Travers. "One neighbor talks about how a nursing home full of stranded residents was ignored until they replaced the Black people on the roof, crying for help, with white people."
