Good bye Hurricane Erin, meteorologist Jeff Berardelli posted yesterday.
I don't know why he says good bye, I say Hello! 😁Within the last 24 hours, Erin entered the jet train and travelled 1660km across the Atlantic. Now at speed of 115km/hour or 62knots which is only 37km (20kn) below a cat 1 hurricane.
And her eye is at 956hPa.

Fascinating is the motionless, blue tornado-like trunk protruding out of Erin into the jet. And within 24 hours, the wind band got all messed up. Quite the contrary to the straightening and strengthening which the UK Met Office predicted for what Erin will do to the jet.
But it's early yet, maybe their projection manifests tomorrow.

Hurricane Erin | Bulletin 7
A Mandatory Evacuation order remains in effect for Hatteras Island.N.C. Hwy. 12 remains closed from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Hatteras Village due to ocean overwash. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect through midnight Saturday.
Conditions are expected to remain hazardous, especially around tonight’s 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow’s 8 a.m. high tides. As pictured here, Dare County crews are assisting NCDOT with pumping floodwater between Frisco and Hatteras (Sandy Bay) to help clear the roadway.
Based on the latest forecast, reentry is not expected to begin Saturday, Aug. 23. Officials will continue to monitor conditions and establish a staged reentry process once NCDOT can safely reopen Hwy. 12.

Post-storm damage assessment is the process of determining the severity of the damage to the community, including homes, businesses, and public infrastructure, to inform recovery efforts and decide if state or federal assistance is needed.
Dare County remains under a State of Emergency. A mandatory evacuation for Hatteras Island remains in place. A US National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect for Dare County until 12 a.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

8/22/25 @ 4:50 AM - Although Erin is moving away from our coast, significant impacts will continue today for the Outer Banks between Oregon Inlet and Ocracoke due to large swells and wave run-up on severely compromised dune structures. Some properties on the northern Outer Banks as well as the Crystal Coast, Downeast, and Coastal Onslow may see some shallow coastal flooding as well. Lastly, the rip current risk will remain high for beaches north of Cape Lookout.

On the forecast track, the center of Erin will pass south of Atlantic Canada today & tonight, & then race across the north Atlantic waters.

As expected, conditions have worsened with this evening’s high tide. Water has breached the dunes at multiple beach accesses in Kill Devil Hills and there is some standing water and sand along NC 12 (the Beach Road).
⚠️ Please use extreme caution when traveling along the Beach Road.
Remember: Floodwaters are extremely dangerous. Even shallow water can knock you off your feet or sweep a vehicle away. If you encounter a flooded street, turn around and do not attempt to drive through the water.

From NCDOT NC12 on FB: Good afternoon! NC12 remains closed south of the Basnight Bridge to Hatteras Village and on the north end of Ocracoke Island.
Our crews were out today shoring up a few of our 'hotspots' in preparation for what could be the most severe of our high tide cycles. We expect to see more overwash at tonight's high tide at 7 p.m. and possibly tomorrow morning's at 7:30 a.m.
The good news is, we have not found any indication of pavement damage yet. If that remains the case, it will make the reopening process quicker.
In any case, here is a video survey (on the Facebook link) of some of our hotspots, taken today around noon. They go from north to south, starting at the Canal Zone, then Pea Island, then secondary roads in Rodanthe, then Buxton, then just north of Hatteras.
We'll send out more information when it becomes available.
