  3. #Meteorologists are subjected to an alarming rise in hate speech. 4. #HurricaneMelissa left #meteorologists stunned and worried
Melissa's extreme winds, periods of rapidly intensifying winds, and the way it skipped a typical replacement of its inner core amazed scientists who study tropical cyclones.
In the minds of many – but not all – #hurricane and #climate experts, Melissa’s terrifying trip through the #Caribbean also piled on evidence of the increasing influence of a warming ocean on an evolving hurricane landscape.

  5. What #Pacific ‘blob’ + #LaNiña means for #winter in #US
What is clear to #meteorologists is that the Pacific #heatwave may be a significant player in influencing late fall and winter #weather patterns across large parts of the #NorthernHemisphere.
The big question mark for winter in the #UnitedStates is what the extreme #ocean heat, with water #temperatures running as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit above average for this time of year, will do to the #jetstream.

  6. Tracking Aftermath From #HurricaneErin on #Ocean
#Meteorologists piece together aftereffects in #hurricane’s path, and look ahead to future storms.
One key signature is temperature. Ocean is layered like a cake, with warm water on top and cold water below. #Hurricanes churn those layers, bringing cooler water to surface. Because hurricanes feed on heat, this cooling effect could weaken future storms in area, said Greg Foltz, #oceanographer at #NOAA

  11. #NationalWeatherService is now hiring back hundreds of positions that got cut in the #DOGE chaos
#NWS has received permission to hire 450 #meteorologists, #hydrologists and radar technicians just months after being hit hard by DOGE related cuts and early retirement incentives.
The new hiring number includes 126 new positions that were previously approved and will apply to “front-line mission critical” personnel, a #NOAA official told CNN.

  12. Do #meteorologists not know that mid is short for middle? I live in St Louis. Middle of the god damn country. And yet I constantly read news reports that stay dangerous storms tore through the #Midwest. Omg, where? South Dakota. Wisconsin. Michigan. That is NOT Midwest.

  13. With so many vital systems protecting the US public being tampered with-- whether hastily and thoughtlessly or methodically uncaring-- we're challenged to understand the scope of potential harms we're now facing.

And the upshot isn't confined to the United States.

Being better informed leads to better decisions and even decisions where none might have been made at all, a decision to participate.

Join US #meteorologists and #ClimateResearchers to hear details of how we're kept safe by the weather and climate science community--- and how we can stay that way:

"From Wednesday, May 28th to Sunday, June 1st, join meteorologists and climate scientists from across the US as we share our work, and show you what makes it so vital. We will clarify the impact of the cuts on this research, and answer your questions about weather and climate research in the US. Information on how to watch is coming soon. If you are a scientist who wants to participate, please visit this speakers page to learn more."

  14. Happy #Thursday afternoon from the #Northland!

It's been #spring for us #meteorologists since March 1, but now the calendar has passed the #VernalEquinox.

We are enjoying a fine early spring day #weather wise with plenty of #sun, seasonal #temperatures, and a southerly #breeze.

TV stations affected R owned by #billionaire Byron Allen who also owns The #WeatherChannel. In a statement, Allen's TV group says weather #forecasting at local station level is being taken over by The Weather Channel. yahoo.com/news/local-tv-meteor #weather #climatecrisis #environment #disasters #wildfires #censorship #maga

  17. 👀 JHC. As Hurricane #Milton approaches Florida #meteorologists are staying awake for days at a time trying to get vital, life-saving information out to the folks who will be affected. That’s their job. But this year, several of them tell Rolling Stone, they’re increasingly having to take time out to quell the nonstop flow of #misinformation during a particularly traumatic #hurricane season. And some of them are doing it while being personally threatened.

  18. Different quadrants in a #hurricane have different risks. #Meteorologists use this as a guide to know where the worst damage is possible based on the movement of the storm. #Milton #HurricaneMilton #Florida #weather #science

  19. Hurricane Helene drone flight breaks records for data collection and flying time

As #Hurricane Helene developed in the Gulf of Mexico, #NOAA researchers gathered critical data from the sea and sky to better understand tropical #cyclones and support the National Hurricane Center forecasters. This real time data gives #meteorologists a clearer picture of the storm environment and structure, reducing forecast uncertainty.

  20. @lmc Interesting to see the amount of time given to reporting traffic and weather in the San Francisco and Los Angeles news you tuned in to. (SF, 5 mins traffic, 5 mins weather; LA, 10 mins traffic, 20 mins weather).

We’d be even more interested in hearing whether any of the #meteorologists or other #wx reporters commented on impact of traffic/transportation on #weather. As we noted in bikemonterey.org/climate-chang:

In California, the California Air Resources Board reported (“California Greenhouse Gas Emissions for 2000 to 2020: Trends of Emissions and Other Indicators, October 26, 2022) “The #transportation sector remains the largest source of GHG emissions in the State. Direct emissions…account for 37 percent of statewide emissions in 2020….When upstream emissions from oil extraction, petroleum refining, and oil pipelines in California are included, transportation is responsible for about 47 percent of statewide emissions in 2020.”

  21. I wonder how many #meteorologists are going to get hate emails and angry phone calls from people because it's cloudy on #eclipse day.

Sadly, I think that number is greater than zero.

  22. GROUNDHOG DAY FUN:

So in honor of the one day of the year where us #meteorologists and trained weather #forecasters are pushed aside so some critter can see if there's a need for #sunglasses today, here's my take on how well one #Wisconsin #groundhog has done for the #Northland the past decade.

Overall, I'm fine with seeing some #folklore like this live in with predicting the #weather, whether it's right or not.

  26. You know, we don't thank our #weather people, #meteorologists, and #climate scientists enough. They perform important work every day, and I wish we had a notable national or global holiday to celebrate them and thank them for their tireless work. Stories like this pain me to read, I hope we all can take a moment and be grateful for climate #science and the people behind it.

    Thank you.
