Scientists change how El Nino is labeled to keep up with spike in temperature
Increasingly hot waters globally have caused the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration this month to alter how it calculates when the weather pattern has flipped into a new cycle. ENSO, a climate pattern in the equatorial Pacific Ocean that includes El Niño and La Niña, has been the dominant driver of total water storage extremes at the global level over the past two decades. What's more, the researchers found that ENSO has a synchronizing effect on water storage extremes across continents.
