BREAKING: NWS Mount Holly has determined a tornado of unknown intensity (EF-U) briefly touched down in a wooded area near Estell Manor in Atlantic County, NJ, on Thursday night. It appears a delayed report of a tree down in that very area did not factor into that assessment, so I wonder if they will send a team now they know of damage. A total of five tornadoes have now been confirmed to have hit the NWS Mount Holly coverage area on Thursday. #njwx

Current radar shows most rain off the NJ coast and some showers and, maybe, a storm south of D.C. heading mostly ENE toward SE NJ. The latest RRFS run for 6 pm EDT shows a few showers close to the coast and an isolated storm/shower in NW NJ — and that's about the extent of rainfall today, according to the model run. #njwx
-
You could see this coming with yesterday's model guidance backing off today's rain threat, but the threat for excessive rainfall & flooding today in most of New Jersey is gone. Just a marginal (level 1/4) risk in extreme South Jersey. #njwx

Unsettled at times this weekend as it turns more humid. Some showers and thunderstorms around, especially Saturday into Saturday night. It then dries out with lower humidity early next week. -

And areas along and northwest of the I-95 corridor in New Jersey are under MARGINAL (level 1/5) risk for severe weather on Sunday from that line of storms mentioned in my weekend update. #njwx

Hmm…a trained spotter has reported 4.95” of rain in the southeastern part of Mays Landing, and there are radar estimates near that location to support that, so it is possible these radar estimates might be closer to reality than usual. Maybe those oranges and reds aren’t exactly 8-10” but they could well be 6-8” — and that’s still a heck of a lot of rain! #njwx
-
Actual observations will likely be lower, but radar-estimated rainfall totals in parts of Atlantic & Cumberland counties are staggering. The circled area is basically 8”+ rainfall with 10” in those red spots. That is insane. No models showed that. What they did get right was the general theme of 2”+ rainfall from Lower Bucks, PA, through Central NJ into NYC metro. Some spots there underperformed, but overall a great job. #njwx
