    Hurricane Erin | Bulletin 7
A Mandatory Evacuation order remains in effect for Hatteras Island.

N.C. Hwy. 12 remains closed from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Hatteras Village due to ocean overwash. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect through midnight Saturday.

Conditions are expected to remain hazardous, especially around tonight’s 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow’s 8 a.m. high tides. As pictured here, Dare County crews are assisting NCDOT with pumping floodwater between Frisco and Hatteras (Sandy Bay) to help clear the roadway.

Based on the latest forecast, reentry is not expected to begin Saturday, Aug. 23. Officials will continue to monitor conditions and establish a staged reentry process once NCDOT can safely reopen Hwy. 12.

From Dare County Government on FB:

Chief Jack Scarborough of the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad shares an important message as the worst impacts from Hurricane Erin begin with tonight’s 6 p.m. high tide:

🌊 2–4 feet of storm surge & large waves are expected to push water inland.
🚑 First responders are ready—but conditions may prevent them from reaching you.
🏠 Now is the time to move vehicles and outdoor items to higher ground and prepare to shelter in place.

If water surrounds your home, move to the highest level and stay there until it recedes. Don’t let your guard down after the first high tide—dangerous conditions could persist into Friday.

Help us help you—take action now to stay safe.

From #DareCounty Government on FB: 🚨 Life-threatening conditions are developing along the Outer Banks as Hurricane Erin approaches. Dare County is under a Tropical Storm Watch, Storm Surge Watch and High Surf Advisory.

🌊 Storm surge up to 4 feet above ground with waves up to 20 feet is expected.
🚧 N.C. Highway 12 on Hatteras Island could flood as early as 5 p.m. today—with flooding persisting for several days and making the road impassable. Emergency response may become impossible.

⚠️ A Mandatory Evacuation Order is in effect for all Hatteras Island residents and visitors. There are no Mandatory Evacuation orders in effect for Evacuation Zone B (all other areas of Dare County) at this time.

Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson warns:
“Hurricane Erin is different. Extended flooding and the threat to Highway 12 will severely limit our ability to respond. Do not take the risk. Evacuate now, while it is still safe to do so.”

Residents north of Oregon Inlet should also remain alert—conditions will worsen, and rising ocean water may require moving vehicles and securing property.

Please take this storm seriously, follow all evacuation orders and stay out of the ocean. Visit DareNC.gov/Erin for more information.

  10. #NorthCarolina: #DareCounty’s free #SeedLibraries are ready for #SpringPlanting
    March 6, 2025

"According to the Dare County Extension Master Gardeners, it’s time to start propagating seeds, and if you’re in search of some special seeds to get you started this season, the Dare County Library has you covered with its free Seed Libraries program.

"Thanks to generous donations made by Burpee Seeds, Sow True Seed, Seed Savers Exchange and Lowe’s Home Improvement, the Dare County Library’s Seed Libraries are fully stocked and ready for 2025 spring planting.

"The Seed Libraries are free to the public, and are available at all three Dare County Library locations, including #HatterasVillage.

"Launched in 2022 as a means to share seeds in communities with #FoodSecurity issues, the Dare County Library’s Seed Library program provides a variety of vegetable, herb, flower and plant seeds that can be 'checked out' from all three Dare County Library branches with the intention of growing them locally.

"Growing instruction cards are available to assist with every type of seed, and a live inventory can be found in the online Seed Library guide.

"After the plant has matured, growers are encouraged to harvest and donate some of their seeds back, thus making the Seed Library truly local and sustainable.

"The long-term goal of the Seed Library is to give locals access to plant varieties that grow and thrive on the #OuterBanks while also providing the knowledge needed to maintain kitchen gardens and reduce household overhead.

"A mix of commercially and locally harvested seeds are available year-round, with types and quantities varying based on supply. A variety of new seeds will also be introduced this year, including celery seed, cowpeas and mustard seeds, among others.

"In addition, the Seed Libraries currently have new varieties of several old favorites, such as three new types of basil, as well as carrots and an array of different lettuces to make the perfect salad—plus so much more.

"For additional information about the Seed Library program, please stop by your local branch or visit earlibrary.libguides.com/DareC
