Forest degradation (continued)
"Southeast Asian forests have the strongest declines in aboveground biomass under increasing water limitation. […] Predicting tropical-forest carbon storage requires accounting for interactions among climate, disturbance, soil and topography".
Nunes, M.H., Muller-Landau, H.C., Görgens, E.B. et al. "Heterogeneous climatic controls on tropical-forest biomass" (2026). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-026-10880-2

"We quantify the aboveground carbon sink of recovering forests across three main continuous tropical humid regions: the Amazon, Borneo and Central Africa. On the basis of satellite data products, our analysis encompasses the heterogeneous spatial and temporal patterns of growth in degraded and secondary forests, influenced by key environmental and anthropogenic drivers. In the first 20 years of recovery, regrowth rates in Borneo were up to 45% and 58% higher than in Central Africa and the Amazon, respectively. This is due to variables such as temperature, water deficit and disturbance regimes. We find that regrowing degraded and secondary forests accumulated 107 Tg C year−1 between 1984 and 2018, counterbalancing 26% of carbon emissions from humid tropical forest loss during the same period. Protecting old-growth forests is therefore a priority."

#Beetles of the genus #Callistethus (#Rutelinae, #Scarabaeidae) are mainly distributed across the #tropics and #subtropics of #Asia, as well as Central and South #America. Ming-Zhi Zhao (2026) described four #newspecies within the #Callistethus #auronitens species complex, assigned two species to the genus Callistethus, and elevated two subspecies to full species status. #Biodiversity

Fossilized coral seacliff, late afternoon, Atiu coastline, Cook Islands, South Pacific. May 1990. Atiu's coral reef grows directly from the shoreline and encircles the island. Eruptions from an undersea volcano have raised the inner portion to form these fossilized coral cliffs.

I like that this church's designer was aware it was in the tropics.
The side sections have glassless windows with very open, decorative grids for maximum air flow.
Not clear in the photo but the sides of the main internal church building were a series of shuttered doors that could be closed if it ever got cool enough or if horizontal rain was expected.

Uhhhh
Tropical Storm Elida marked as eventually becoming a Tropical Depression off the coast of... San Francisco?

Communication styles of BRICS countries within the SADC context is essential for making informed decisions, fostering effective collaborations, and successfully navigating the complex landscape of this regional bloc. It requires ongoing research, cultural awareness, and adaptability to thrive in the diverse and dynamic environments of these nations. @[email protected] ·From Storms to Survival: El Niño, Frankenstein, America, War, and the World Cup — A 19-Theme Global Journey Through History, Crisis, and Human Resilience
19 Themes: From El Niño to Frankenstein, America, War, and the World Cup — A Global Story of Survival
History shows one truth: humanity adapts. From famine to floods, from war to sport, every crisis creates new stories, ideas, and identities.
Theme 1: Nature Writes History
History is often shaped by nature—droughts, floods, and climate shifts have changed civilizations.
Theme 2: El Niño and Southern Africa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWkOD_ukuE0
El Niño has intensified drought in southern Africa, affecting food systems and migration.
Theme 3: Northern Namibia and the Rain Crisis
Northern regions face both drought and flash floods, showing climate extremes.
Theme 4: When Heavy Rains Change Culture
Storms have inspired stories, myths, and literature for centuries.
Theme 5: The Story of Frankenstein
Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley after the famous “Year Without a Summer” in Europe—caused by volcanic climate disruption, not El Niño or the Bahamas.
Theme 6: Lords, Poets, and the Birth of Horror
At Lake Geneva, Lord Byron challenged guests to write ghost stories. That night helped create Frankenstein.
Theme 7: Queens and Power in Times of Crisis
Royal power often shaped responses to famine, plague, and war.
Theme 8: Nuclear War and Human Fear
The Cold War created global fear of annihilation.
Theme 9: Crisis Creates Innovation
Wars and disasters often accelerate scientific breakthroughs.
Theme 10: The Spirit of United States
America’s story is one of reinvention—immigration, innovation, industry, and resilience.
Theme 11: America and the Global Story
The U.S. has shaped global politics, culture, technology, and sport.
Theme 12: Migration in Times of Hardship
People move when survival demands it.
Theme 13: Food Security and Global Hunger
Climate and conflict continue to threaten food systems.
Theme 14: Sports as Global Healing
Sport often unites where politics divide.
Theme 15: FIFA World Cup and Global Identity
The World Cup tells stories of nations, pride, migration, and identity.
Theme 16: Southern Africa on the World Stage
African nations carry regional hope into global tournaments.
Theme 17: History’s Lesson — Adapt or Fall
Empires rise and fall based on their ability to adapt.
Theme 18: The Future of Climate and Conflict
Climate change may become the next great test of human resilience.
Theme 19: Humanity’s Shared Story
From Namibia to America, from famine to football, from literature to war—the human story is survival, creativity, and adaptation.
Final Reflection
History tells us that nature, crisis, and imagination are deeply connected. Whether it is El Niño in southern Africa, the creation of Frankenstein, the fear of nuclear war, or the joy of the World Cup, each chapter reminds us: humanity endures by adapting.
